Video: Bruins goal waved off after questionable goalie interference call

Apr 2, 2014, 9:06 PM EST

Boston looked to have taken a 1-0 lead against Detroit on Wednesday night when Torey Krug converted on the B’s first power play of the game — but no.

Zdeno Chara was called for interfering with Wings goalie Jimmy Howard, a decision that, upon further review, was pretty questionable:

A few reactions from Twitter:

Any controversy surrounding the goal was quickly wiped out, though, as Johnny Boychuk scored moments later to give (or, re-give) Boston the lead:

While I want to see the Wings continue their streak of playoff appearances, this was a BS call and yet another example of how the NHL needs to expand the video review rules.

Kicked Howard’s stick, and he could have easily avoided it.

    • Shanahammer - Apr 2, 2014 at 9:21 PM

From the result of a Kronwall check. Actually watch the video at the 30 second mark.

    • sabatimus - Apr 2, 2014 at 9:38 PM

Get some facts, then come back and see me.

  3. sabatimus - Apr 2, 2014 at 9:34 PM

Wow, how the hell do you blow a call that badly? Worst call I’ve seen all year.

  4. erbaker67 - Apr 2, 2014 at 9:40 PM

One of the worst calls I’ve ever seen. I was hoping Julien was going to go all Tortorella after that call

  5. stakex - Apr 2, 2014 at 9:44 PM

One of these days the GMs will wake up and finally expand view review to include goaltender interference. At least, one would think they will…..

  6. mshantz22 - Apr 2, 2014 at 9:53 PM

I’ve seen a lot less called as a penalty for goalie interference. Brings back memories of Tomas Holmstrom and Marty Turco.

  7. polegojim - Apr 2, 2014 at 10:45 PM

    Boston homers… Sheesh.

  8. mackattack29 - Apr 2, 2014 at 10:53 PM

For real. Boston fans are the worst. Chara got beat bad by nyquist. Chara is so overrated it’s ridiculous. Lol the call was karma for the bruins dirty play all year.

    • justinhbhb - Apr 2, 2014 at 11:20 PM

      Amen

    • drewzducks - Apr 2, 2014 at 11:32 PM

I’m guessing you’re just stupid enough to believe that.

    • rahavort - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:45 AM

I bet he’s overrated in your opinion because he plays for the Bruins, but if he was on your team you’d be saying he’s one of the best in the league. Move along

      • thegreatmorpheos - Apr 3, 2014 at 9:37 AM

He’s slower than a three toed sloth. A real liability that was exposed by Chicago for all the world to see.

    • kovodisc - Apr 3, 2014 at 10:36 AM

And the Nyquist goal (which was beautiful by the way), and B’s fans in general, have exactly what to do with this blatantly blown call by the refs?

      Keep chugging the haterade

    • pepper2011 - Apr 3, 2014 at 11:28 AM

You really need to learn the game of hockey. Nyquist goal was a turnover as Chara was coming off the bench from a line change, and he was heading into the offensive zone. The puck didn’t get in, and yeah he got caught flat footed, but he was coming on for a change. Not much he could do. Nyquist flies and had the momentum.

Chara has never been fast. Never. He is almost 7′ tall.

The Blackhawks didn’t expose anything because they are not little and fast. Chara has always had a little difficulty with the little fast guys. Did you watch the Penguins series. How many points did Sid/Malkin have?

They are a good team that played well, and seriously it was a minute away from game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals for the 2nd time in 3 years how badly did they “expose” him? by being a really good team? Bickel wasn’t beating him with speed either.

If Chara is so overrated how or why have the B’s been to SCF’s 2/3 years and very good chance at making a deep run this year?

is it the system? the goaltending? everyone has an excuse or reason as to why a Bruins player isn’t really that good, but they keep winning. “Rask isn’t that good, it’s the system and the D”
“Chara’s not that good, it’s Rask”

Make up your mind. Chara is a +24 and plays the most (by a longshot) on the B’s defense.

also- Bartkowski (78), Miller (43), Krug (76), Hamilton (100) – those numbers are career games played. Last I checked they didn’t lose in March and are 15-1-1 in their last 17. You don’t see teams do that without an absolute beast on D. That beast is Chara. don’t forget to subtract 17 games from their totals to see where it started. Also – Hamilton is 20 years old.

Rooney is a Southie kid Good ref yet I’m not a fan when he does bruins games Seem to try too hard not to appear to favor Bruins. Like I said good ref but not his first missed Bruins call. Jeez can we start playoffs now

  10. slaugin - Apr 2, 2014 at 11:06 PM

As much as that call was BS, they still scored on that PP so it pretty much evened out.

  11. slaugin - Apr 2, 2014 at 11:08 PM

I don’t understand how every one thinks the Bruins are a bunch of dirty players, I am pretty level headed and try to be objective and just don’t see it

    • hockeydon10 - Apr 3, 2014 at 8:16 AM

The majority is probably due to Marchand. Good scrappy player with a little scoring touch, but, on so many stoppages his go to move is ‘punch opposing player in face’. Even when there isn’t a scrum or isn’t any sort of controversy or animosity.

      • pepper2011 - Apr 3, 2014 at 11:54 AM

@hockeydon – it’s called being annoying. He is trying to draw a penalty. Nothing he ever does would be considered malicious. Face washing the Sedins or a couple short jabs to the chin isn’t trying to hurt someone. I forget who it was last night he tapped him on the back of the legs and the guy turned around and cross checked him twice as hard. Almost drew a penalty.

Guys do it all the time to Lucic and Chara (in particular). It looks a lot worse when the guy you are hitting is substantially smaller. it’s the opposing players job to keep his cool

Marchand doesn’t get enough credit for how good offensively he is. He carries and controls the puck more than just about any player in the league.

    • pepper2011 - Apr 3, 2014 at 11:45 AM

It’s jealousy. People don’t think the Bruins are dirty. There are a few teams fan bases that think that, but it’s jealousy.

99.999% of all B’s hate comments come from these teams fans:
      Canucks
      Habs
      Pens
      Sabres

With the Pens and Habs you have two teams that just whine and embellish everything, and both have a HUGE sense of entitlement. Vancouver thought they won an Stanley Cup. I understand why the Sabres are all bent out of shape, but that was years ago, and when you send John Scott out on the ice repeatedly; you lose integrity.

There is a vast difference between dirty and being a pest. Marchand is no longer dirty. He was with the low hits and slew foots, but it’s been 2 years since any incident with him. He seemed to learn his lesson with the Salo hit. in his defense he did ask for clarity after the SCF’s against the canucks when Hamius did it to Lucic. There is a very fine line between that hit (salo/marchand) and the Lucic/emelin hit the other night.

If you notice Hawks, Rangers, Blues, Sharks, Kings, and even the Flyers fans don’t say the B’s are cheap and dirty. They are tough. the teams I just listed get it.

I hate the Flyers, but they aren’t dirty. They are tough as hell, and if they feel you crossed a line they will come after you, but they aren’t dirty (anymore -sesitio is/was, and Rinaldo cleaned up and turned into a nice player).

The hawks are a great example: the B’s clearly targeted Toews physically in the SCF. they hit him a lot, but you never heard him whine. If that was Sid he would have been flopping all over the ice like a linesman just hit him.

on a side note: Brendan Gallagher is the only Canadien I would want on the B’s. Dude is a tough little XXXX.

  12. slaugin - Apr 3, 2014 at 12:26 AM

There’s a difference between playing on the edge and being dirty… Marchand can certainly get on the wrong side of that line at times. But who else? Lucic cause he hits hard? Chara because he’s a Giant?

  13. mp1131211 - Apr 3, 2014 at 3:29 AM

Should thrown chara out of the game for good measure. Nothing like the Bs ending up on the bad side of a good game.

  14. rahavort - Apr 3, 2014 at 6:40 AM

Man that linesman was pretty quick to wave it off, ridiculous call and ridiculous trying to justify the no goal as the puck was NOWHERE NEAR Chara’s skate. Good job linesman! I applaud you for missing another blatant goal

  15. hockeydon10 - Apr 3, 2014 at 8:21 AM

Chara’s right skate moves Howard’s stick. A few seconds pass. Non-goal is scored.

As a Detroit fan, I know the frustration Bs fans must be feeling. Shades of Tomas Holmstrom on that call. He had so many called back without ever touching the goalie.

    Still glad we won!

    • kovodisc - Apr 3, 2014 at 10:32 AM

His skate hit his stick due to the fact that Kronwall pushed him into it.

  16. slaugin - Apr 3, 2014 at 4:53 PM

    Well said pepper
