Douglas Murray receives match penalty for hit on Michael Kostka

Apr 1, 2014, 10:55 PM EDT

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Douglas Murray hasn’t ever been suspended by the NHL despite a lengthy career of heavy hits, but Tuesday’s match penalty infraction on Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Michael Kostka might change that.

Video is only available via this TSN link for now, but Next Impulse’s Pete Blackburn captured it in GIF form:

There hasn’t been an update yet on the condition of Kostka, 28, but it sounds like the situation could have been worse.

Again, Murray, 34, hasn’t ever been suspended at the NHL level.

The Lightning went on to win Tuesday’s game 3-1, with both teams clinching playoff spots in the process. Here’s how the Lightning’s clinching win/Montreal’s loss affects the 2014 NHL Draft:

That was ugly. Don’t think the guy has a history, so don’t think he’ll get a long one, but that has to be 2 games or so

    • blomfeld - Apr 2, 2014 at 12:48 AM

The Habs, Murray and such as …

  2. letsgolightning - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:02 PM

Murray leaves his feet and shoulders into Kostka’s head. Yeah, he’s a first time offender, but there’s some distinct intent here. This doesn’t belong in the game.

    • sjsharks66 - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:22 PM

I am not sure that there was intent, not really Murray’s game. I agree though, elbow right to the jaw. Has to face the music on this one.

  3. jhaegs - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:03 PM

That was a bad one. Looked like he just had bad aim, but still deserves a suspension. Over/under at 3 games…

  4. stcrowe - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:08 PM

Murray is such a slow skater that you pretty much have to skate into him. However, there is no excuse for his lunging into Kostka. A suspension is warranted, not that his absence really hurts the Canadiens.

Now to all of you who dared to call Orpik’s hit on Toews cheap, take a look at this hit. Clear elbow to the face. That was a cheap shot.

    • sjsharks66 - Apr 2, 2014 at 1:16 AM

I don’t think anyone, besides a Hab’s fan, would argue that was a dirty hit.

      • drewsylvania - Apr 2, 2014 at 9:59 AM

To most Habs fans, dirty hit = “my guy got hit”.

  6. shortsxit34 - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:21 PM

It’s pretty much textbook targeting the head.
He lines him up, and leaves his feet to lunge his shoulder into Kostla’s head.

Cue the, “Tampa Bay should call the police” comments.

    • cofran2004 - Apr 2, 2014 at 6:54 AM

They can’t call the police. this hit happened in florida. Murray was just standing his ground xD

That was a joke. I know some of you take things way too seriously, so please… take the comment for what it was, and move on.

      • shortsxit34 - Apr 2, 2014 at 6:00 PM

        LOL, well played.

  7. sjsharks66 - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:21 PM

Murray was never a dirty player. I still don’t think he is. However he left is feet and elbowed Kostka right in the jaw. 3 games for Crankshaft.

    • pepper2011 - Apr 2, 2014 at 10:51 AM

He’s just adapting to his new team and style of play – pretty soon he’ll be flopping all over the place.

  8. twinsfanfl - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:43 PM

Never would happen, but suspend him for the 1st and/or 2nd game of the playoffs against the Lightning. That’d be a way to let him serve it against the team he did this to.

  9. drewzducks - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:44 PM

I’m shocked that a player from such a ” classy” organization would commit such a gutless, dirty act. April Fools.

    • govtminion - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:52 PM

What would you bet the 911 switchboard in Montreal was dead silent about this?

    • pete387 - Apr 2, 2014 at 1:23 AM

I give that hit 5 classless Subbans.

  10. scottybcboy - Apr 1, 2014 at 11:58 PM

Textbook headshot……no full body contact….2 games, should be more but it won’t be.

  11. rushledger - Apr 2, 2014 at 12:16 AM

I will say I don’t think that’s where he was aiming I feel like he missed his mark, nonetheless what he did end up doing unintentionally or not was a hit to the head and he should get 2-3 for it.

  12. stakex - Apr 2, 2014 at 12:49 AM

Not much to debate about this one… suspension incoming.

  13. jrclark1978 - Apr 2, 2014 at 6:18 AM

    He brought the elbow up

  14. ironyisadeadscene - Apr 2, 2014 at 6:45 AM

5 games for a pure headshot (at least it should be). Typical dirty Habs….

  15. drewsylvania - Apr 2, 2014 at 10:01 AM

When do we start suspending coaches for the repeated actions of their players? Bourque, Emelin, now Murray….
