Detroit hands Toronto a crushing eighth consecutive loss

Mar 29, 2014, 10:06 PM EDT

If the Toronto Maple Leafs came into tonight as a “wounded bear,” then some might feel that the Detroit Red Wings put them out of their misery on Saturday with a 4-2 decision.

Darren Helm generated his first hat trick tonight:

… While Jimmy Howard made some big saves, including this one:

It’s probably unfair to rule out the Maple Leafs altogether, although it’s quite possible that they’ve buried themselves with this eight-game losing streak. Joffrey Lupul went from optimistic to glum after this one.

There are a lot of salt-in-the-wounds notes from this one, even beyond the fact that the Maple Leafs are facing a Red Wings team that is banged up (so Jonathan Bernier not being 100 percent excuses probably fall on deaf ears). For one thing, this collapse has been downright historic:

If that isn’t enough, it appears that Phil Kessel might have gotten injured during the game, possibly when a one-timer pass seemed to hit him in the foot. (He was seen grimacing on the bench but played on while receiving significant criticism.)

And it gets worse

Sorry to pile on, Maple Leafs fans, but just about every other East bubble team (other than Washington) made the situation even bleaker on Saturday.

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets won in overtime.
  • The New Jersey Devils managed a “charity point” before losing yet another shootout.
  • Things obviously improved for Detroit, too.

Here is an East outlook via NBC Sports:

Things look pretty grim from both a standings and games in hand standpoint for the Maple Leafs, opening up the possibility that this will be viewed as the night that the Leafs’ playoff hopes died.

Condolences to all Maple Leafs fans, especially the hardest-hitting ones.

How long till Lamoriello hires Carlyle? Cause nobody loves a loser like Lou Lamoriello.

I can picture Dooman sitting in his Moms basement in his Leaf jammies wailing about just how wrong he has been about his beloved Leafs…..but he won’t ever come on here and admit it.

You asked a question below – “Somebody please tell me who or what on the Leafs team is worth wasting 3 hours watching or spending $400 to go and see live!” – How about you tell us. You don’t even like the Leafs, and yet you show up on every Leaf article? I can totally understand why Leaf fans follow all the articles and such, but people like you (your typical Leaf hater) I just can’t figure out. Also, I really don’t understand why there are so many of you that people actually came up with a name for you, lol! The Leafs should play both sides and sell “hater” jerseys. They would double their money overnight! You are a special one though. I don’t talk to you, I don’t know you and I really don’t care to. Yet for about a year now, you have continually made comments about me??? You don’t seem to have any specific team that you follow, other than the Leafs that is, and even then you seem to care more about me….so I was just wondering, what is your fascination with me? I guess that I’m just trying to figure out whether you are just a run of the mill idiot, or more of the actual stalker type???

Welcome out of the basement Doo glad to see you made it through last nights game without choking on your own self righteous opinions.

As long as Acc is sold out they could lose 10,20 games…who cares..nothing changes as long as BILLIONARES make money at MLSE…Making Lossing Seem Easy

Hard times for Leaf Nation for sure

    • blinkyhowe - Mar 30, 2014 at 3:28 AM

After 7 losses in a lose number 8 to the Grand Rapids Red Wings? And for the 2nd time in a couple of weeks? Tough is an understatement….

Sundin, rocked it in T. to help keep a 10 year losing streak against the Canucks alive until this season when a depleted Canucks squad faced the Leafs…

Leafs make 1.2 million a home game…where are the hard times????

  10. stcrowe - Mar 29, 2014 at 11:35 PM

Even if they are not mathematically eliminated yet, any team that loses eight straight in regulation time cannot claim to be a playoff team. They can’t even claim to be close.

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Mar 30, 2014 at 3:43 AM

And yet, they actually are close, and now that they have lulled everyone into a false sense of their ineptitude, they are poised to pounce, go on a tear and roar into the playoffs. What? OK, sorry, gotta go, time for my meds and bed check here at the asylum.

  12. the8man - Mar 30, 2014 at 10:46 AM

Ugh. I really thought they’d be better. Like Montreal better. Everyone ahead of them has two games in hand. They’d have to win out to have any shot.

  13. sherry4002 - Mar 30, 2014 at 4:31 PM

Whats so disappointing is hockey is Canada game, and with the maple leafs loss, only one canadian team will be in the playoffs and that is very sad.

  14. slysipops - Mar 30, 2014 at 4:43 PM

    IS IT …………… ????

  15. atahualpaoxford - Mar 30, 2014 at 6:36 PM

Probably 90% of the people on this forum where not born the last time the Leafs won the Stanley Cup…
There is a better chance for Ukranian troops to invade Russia and parade on Red Square in Moscow or for the Malaysian plane that disappear to touch down at JFK airport tomorrow morning than the Leafs actually doing something noteworthy in our lifetimes…
Why would anybody think that the blue and white were not going to crush their hearts yet once again…??? hmmmmm…
