Video: Blackhawks’ Shaw ejected for spearing Senators’ Smith

Mar 28, 2014, 11:27 PM EDT

Things got heated between the struggling Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators on Friday.

Blackhawks’ forward Andrew Shaw was ejected from the game with less than six minutes remaining for spearing Senators’ Zack Smith in the neutral zone.

Shaw was given a major penalty for spearing, a roughing minor and a game misconduct. Smith received minor penalties for roughing and slashing. The Blackhawks fell behind by three goals in the second period and eventually lost by a final score of 5-3.

Refs don’t care about an orchestrated fight, but Zack Smith can’t stand up for himself after getting Shaw tried to stab him? Why’d the refs get in the middle of that?

Shaw bit off way more than he could chew. Smith can throw em. Fortunately for Shaw the refs came to the rescue for some reason.

You have NO idea what you’re talking about. Shaw responded to smiths pokes and jabs. And smith would NOT have beaten shaw.

let them fight, same thing happened w/ Voracek and Phanuef tonite

I love Shaw, love his passion, but he’s a borderline-dirty player. A lot of people respect him for his heart and willingness to play hard despite his size, but I hope he doesn’t lose that respect with plays like this and become someone with the reputation of Marchand. Just like Marchand, he can be an effective player without stupid plays like this. He’s had too many run-ins with Shanaban for such a short career, hope he can clean up his act a bit. Plays the game hard and most of the time the right way.

Similar in their ‘rat’ like style, which I like, but he’s not as talented as Marchand

      a borderline dirty player?

listen, he’s not going to win the lady byng, but exactly how he is a borderline dirty player? he may have gotten the wrong end of the arrow on shanahans “wheel of ban” for really not that much (I’ll never forget the mike smith incident – I think it was the same night the league had to use premier league refs), but I have a little trouble summoning a lot of empathy for zack smith or really anyone on the sens honestly.

“oh what a vicious spear!!” I get worse at any given family gathering. I thought the ejection was even laughable, not because it wasn’t merited, but I didn’t see MacArthur going anywhere after it looked like he made a clear intentional run at raanta

poor Fin wasn’t around to attend mike smiths acting school

“borderline dirty player” are you sure you didn’t think this was a chicago fire game?

Shaw peed his pants when Roussel challenged him. ROUSSEL?!?

    Grow a set man.

    • hammerhead5573 - Mar 29, 2014 at 7:48 AM

Ok please tell me if we are talking about the same Roussel because I have only been watching hockey for a few days now and I may be wrong. Are we talking about the same Roussel that switched his position on the ice prior to a face off to be right next to Shaw in order to start a fight? A fight that Shaw weho is about 6 inches smaller than Roussel, absolutely handled his own. Are we talking about the same Roussel that had his tail between his legs when Bollig went after him? Are we talking about the same Roussel that went into the fetal position when Thorton went after him? Is that the Roussel we are talking about?

Hammerhead and comeonnowguys, if you need to talk, I’m here. I know you two look up to me, and can’t live without my words of wisdom, so I’m not going to abandon you again.

you definitely had an older brother to hide behind didn’t you?

never seen you after a blues loss. my theory is because you’re just a sh!t talker with no analytic capability.

(that should take care of him for a little while…first he’s going to have to find the one dictionary in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, and then he’ll have to tackle the alphabet before finally determining what “analytic” means. hope your sister isn’t mad you’ll be late to bed)

@No, the best thing you can do is use his own words against him. At that point it becomes hysterical how enraged he gets. I truly get a kick out of it.

Correct call on the ice, but anything more than a fine (if that) from Shanny & friends would be to much, imo.

No place in this league for intentional spearing. I’d like to see him done for the rest of the season and playoffs. Too many good players are getting hurt from accidents. No room for the cheapshot. Finger slashing is a minor, that hurts. Spearing can seriously maime someone. Not a lot of protection in the gut area. Your liver is exposed.

    • thesportsjudge - Mar 29, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Rest of season AND playoffs? Seems a bit excessive, especially in the penalty light league(look at the fines, I mean c’mon, does that REALLY hurt their pay.)

does your mom let you outside without your helmet?

      • comeonnowguys - Mar 29, 2014 at 5:32 PM

Carillon = Carcillo in auto correctese.

  10. alicesrightfootesq - Mar 29, 2014 at 2:54 PM

Shaw is Carcillo/Rinaldo level garbage. Wish we still had real enforcers in this league.

    • comeonnowguys - Mar 29, 2014 at 5:31 PM

No. No. No. No. I hated Carillon before, during and after his time on the ‘Hawks. I am not the biggest fan of Shawn but the two aren’t in the same ballpark.
