Video: PHT Extra — Pittsburgh’s slide, and which team needs to make the playoffs the most?

Mar 27, 2014, 7:00 PM EDT

No Kay Adams this week (much to the chagrin of our commenters, I’m assuming) but Jason and I still managed to discuss the Penguins’ recent slide — they’ve won just two of seven heading into tonight — and which team needs to make the playoffs?

Make note that question isn’t which team wants to make it (c’mon, everybody wants to)… it’s which team needs to make it? Important distinction.

Watch away:

I am so sick of hearing how tired the Pens are. All teams have injuries. The Pens have had more this year but all teams deal with injuries. Bylsma doesnt know how to adapt and overcome. He will stick to what doesnt work or what might have worked when they won the cup. I have said it before and will say it again. When most of your salary cap is tied up in 2 lines it is hard to have depth. Top heavy teams dont win cups. For the life of me I dont understand Shero. He shoild have sured up the D core instead of going for offense. I can tell you one thing, Flopik, Goontorzzo, and Fluberi arent going to cut it in the playoffs. Maybe Scuderi can bury a gew more for other teams in the post season.

seems like you starting slobbering on yourself at the end there

      • bsfan77 - Mar 27, 2014 at 8:55 PM

Kind of like what the Pens are doing right now. Rangers and Flyers are knocking on the door for 1st place in the metro now.

haha, 11 pts back with less than 10 games to play good luck.

Friend, we take it that English may not be your first language ?

      • bsfan77 - Mar 27, 2014 at 10:11 PM

My bad, I didnt check it before I hit post.

      • blomfeld - Mar 27, 2014 at 10:50 PM

it’s okay friend, as that may be ‘my’ bad ? … we Kings have a penchant for speaking the King’s English at all times, which is something which we tend to get ‘carried away with’ even during these new techno-gadgetry times ! … :)

you boston guys are quick to point at others but always seem to forget the fact you have won just 1 stanley cup in the last 40 years. your modern day bruins have the same number of appearances, same number of losses/wins, same number of conf finals, playoff games played…its just moronic for you to have some kind of superiority complex when your team has had the same or less amount of success than the penguins have had recently. its laughable

  2. bsfan77 - Mar 27, 2014 at 9:08 PM

Breaking news…Pens are losing because they are tired.

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Mar 27, 2014 at 9:28 PM

      Notice no pens fans

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Mar 27, 2014 at 9:30 PM

Its like this,,, the pens are petrified of the Bruins and Flyers in the real season hahahahaah !

    • pens5829 - Mar 27, 2014 at 9:39 PM

You need a life dude. You troll every single article on the Penguins. We all know you hate the Pens. We get I it. You’re boring us with your babble.

      • bsfan77 - Mar 27, 2014 at 9:52 PM

He is actually very entertaining. Did the Pens clinch yet? Haha.

they didn’t play a tired game…they looked pretty good out there.

Just home friends from another long day at work, replete with a sore torso, tired & exhausted limbs and an over-taxed cerebellum. Nonetheless, my ‘spent’ disposition has now been ‘immediately’ assuaged by news of yet another ‘glorious’ Kings victory … no less over Cynthia and the Penguins right there in their stupid ‘Igloo’ ! … you just gotta love it man ! :) And for kicks, it sounds like ‘What Can Brown Do For You’ set up the winning goal ! :) Seriously though, it’s really nice to see comrade Jones step up in ‘support’ of Quickie with yet another gallant effort, in addition to comrade Gaborik starting to feel comfortable with his new team, etc …

Executive Summary: the Penguins ‘cannot’ win the SC this year, as that will only be done by one of three ‘dynamic’ California based teams (LA, SJ, Anaheim) … anyway, let’s all promise not to say anything about that to Cynthia eh ? :)

    • hockey412 - Mar 28, 2014 at 8:33 AM

Ah Blomfeld – I’m disappointed about the use of the tired Cynthia joke. But, will accept the rubbing and give credit where it’s due. Good game, Kings…and to be honest, while I’ve been vocal about the Pens lazy play lately…good game, Pens, too.

The Pens outshot the Kings, outHIT the Kings, and in general played very well especially in the third. Work on that power play though, boys…0 for 7 is just horrible, no excuses about who’s out there.

By the way I love hockey players cut-and-dry views on things:

“”That was clear interference. [Sutter] pushed [Jones’] pad right into the net,” Doughty said. “Yeah, I gave him a few shots from behind, but that had nothing to do with his stick and pushing [Jones] into the net. So, it was a great call by the refs and people in Toronto.”

      Sutter saw the play differently.

“I was pretty surprised,” he said. “I just thought the puck came through the crease and I was just trying to jam away at it and it was loose the whole time. I definitely got pushed into the net and the puck went off of me somehow.

“I have no idea how they didn’t call it a goal.””

      • jpelle82 - Mar 28, 2014 at 11:04 AM

the part that frustrated me was they made no call on the ice. i get if they want to talk about if a puck got deflected or not on its way over the glass, sometimes a linesman has better view but in this case the ref was looking right at the play the entire time and did nothing. then toronto apparently called them which just complicated the whole mess. i dont have a problem with the final call, some go your way some dont, i recall the kings getting screwed a couple times this year so good for them i guess. pens fans cant complain about the amount of penalty calls that went their way this game though…i wouldve been pulling my hair out if i were a kings fan last night. the pens convert one of those other pp chances and its a different game

      • hockey412 - Mar 28, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Nope, no problem with the call or the game. Liked the way they appeared to give a damn last night. The Tribune even used the phrase “and they even had a bodycheck” hahaha…they need to step it up physically. Maybe they are just resting/taking it easy for the playoffs, but they’ve been soft.

  4. tdrusher225 - Mar 27, 2014 at 10:58 PM

Dallas? Really? They could certainly use it, but you’re telling me they need a playoff berth more desperately than Toronto, whose heading towards a collapse in the biggest hockey market in the world, and Washington, whose GM is likely fired if they don’t make it? Not a chance.

  5. steelpenbucs87 - Mar 28, 2014 at 9:25 AM

Tough stretch for the Pens at the end of the year, but it’s not all to blame on the injuries. I think the tiredness has some validity as guys like Niskanen, Maatta, and the top two lines of forwards have been forced to play more minutes, but there’s more to this slide that conditioning.

My hunch is that if the Pens get Letang, Malkin, Bennett, and Martin back for at least a game or 3 before the playoffs they can put forth the best possible effort from this roster. I still think their are match up problems with the Blues, Bs, and the Flyers, but at the sametime there’s a reason they don’t play these games on paper (or online to use the parlance of our times).

I think they can get past any of the likely wild card teams with this roster, but the second and third round would bring much greater (possibly too great) challenges

    • hockey412 - Mar 28, 2014 at 9:59 AM

I really think they can piece it together if they get the bodies back, especially on offense. At least to make an interesting run. But you’re right, they’ll need at least a few games to get it going. With Goc going down though, the prospect doesn’t look great.
