Trevor van Riemsdyk has signed a two-year, entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The 22-year-old defenseman was an undrafted free agent and has spent the last three seasons with the University of New Hampshire. He was part of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2011-12 and was selected to the NCAA All-American First Team the following season.

He suffered a fractured ankle during the 2013-14 campaign, but still managed to record four goals and 23 points in 26 games.

He’s also the younger brother of 24-year-old forward James van Riemsdyk, who has set new career-highs this season with 27 goals and 56 points in 71 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Like Trevor, the elder van Riemsdyk played for New Hampshire, but only after the Philadelphia Flyers took him with the second overall pick in 2007.

The younger van Riemsdyk’s contract doesn’t start until 2014-15, so this doesn’t count as the first campaign of the deal.

    The rich get richer.

NCAA free agents need to be put into a waiver system.

Why? This kid has been available for a while, Chicago didn’t steal him or do anything wrong. It’s nice to see they focus on recruiting, especially from the NCAA, even at this point in the year. Maybe I’m missing the point of what you are saying.

So that some podunk franchise can leech off someone else’s great scouting?

Yea, the worst thing possible is to have a player decide where he wants to work.

yeah, remember the ERIC LINDROS situation with the Q. NORDIQUS years ago? I never cared for him after that fiasco.BRIAN BOSWORTH pulled the same crap in the NFL …look where that got him

They aren’t the same at all. One is a free agent the other was drafted

From what I have seen, which admittedly is only a few games, the youngest van Riemsdyk brother, Brendan, may turn out to be the pick of the litter. He is only 17 but he is bigger than his older brothers and looks very mobile. Time will tell

Another case of NHL charity here, giving this kid a job. Least that’s what I heard from muckfudger.
