Video: Brawl breaks out at the buzzer between Blues and Jets

Mar 17, 2014, 11:52 PM EDT

There appears to be bad blood between the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets and it boiled over Monday night.

The Blues scored twice late in the third period to take a 3-1 victory over the visiting Jets in a meeting of two Central Division opponents. Then, in the final seconds, a brawl erupted in the Blues’ end when Dustin Byfuglien took a run at St. Louis defenseman Roman Polak in the corner.

And it all broke loose from there, even as the Blues went up ice with a chance for an empty-net goal. Once everyone realized what was happening at the other end of the ice, players from both teams rushed in to grab a partner and it was on from there.

The brawl ended what was a physical meeting between the two teams, as they combined for 69 registered body checks. They also combined for 114 penalty minutes.

That was just some good, clean, family fun! Glad no one got seriously hurt, and that would be a heck of a series if they meet in the playoffs. Not sure where all the bad blood came from, but it’s fun to watch.

The fan that threw the bottle on the ice was Busch league- seems he had one too many green brewskis. Not as bad as a fan trying to rip Pardee’s head/helmet off though…

Nice to see Roy and Morrow step up, and I hope Jaskin shapes up to be a good replacement until Tank returns.

Good game, Jets. Great game, Blues!

“Then in the final seconds, a brawl erupted” …

      WHO WOULD’VE THOUGHT EH ? :) :) :)

PS: I’d like to offer you a banana Jhaegs, however I’m ‘out’ at the moment man ! :)

You’re out? Gave them all to those Neanderthal Kings I guess?

      • jhaegs - Mar 18, 2014 at 12:26 AM

I guess the Blues players should’ve turtled like those Queens do, eh?

Did your “captain” get benched again tonight?

      • jhaegs - Mar 18, 2014 at 1:24 AM

Kings lost, by the way. Three in a row? Ouch!!!

      • blomfeld - Mar 18, 2014 at 1:37 AM

I know friend … as Martha Stewart might say, it’s not a ‘good thing’ for us … 😦

I gotta put this one on the Blues. The hit was clean, game wasn’t over, there’s not reason he shouldn’t of finished that play. Ashame Byufglien didn’t actually get to square off with anybody…would of been a bad night for whoever that was, lol

    • paperlions - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:53 AM

He took a run at a guy that never had the puck and the puck was long gone. It wasn’t particularly dirty, but it wasn’t within the of play either, which is why he got the extra minor in the mess of penalties at the end of the game.

Guys….. dont fall for blomfeld’s King fan’s act… he’s an old man from Calgary that jumped on the Kings front runner bandwagon once Sutter took over coaching 2 years back… he’s been called out a dozen times for this and he has multiple screen names on here including the know nothing joey… same person

welcome back jets, its been a long time. lets get this rivalry started!!!!!

Hahahhaha blues are lucky. I’m not a fan of either team but if byfuglien hadn’t had 4 guys hanging on him he would’ve turned Reaves or Jackman or really anyone on the blues into his b*tch real quick.

    • paperlions - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:48 AM

He and Reaves would have been an interesting contest. I’m sure Reaves has lost a fight before, but I can’t remember the last time that happened.

    • flyerspsu - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:25 AM

Highly doubt byfuglien would have turned Reaves in his b*tch, the other way around would be a lot more likely

    • jhaegs - Mar 18, 2014 at 11:15 AM

Reaves had gone toe to toe with giants before. I, also, can’t remember him ever getting his a** handed to him.

Hey Mack, you got it backwards there

  7. paperlions - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:57 AM

Poor Chris Porter, he put the puck in the empty net with 0.1 seconds left for his first goal of the year, but they took it away, apparently deciding that play had stopped.

Buff refused to fight Reaves at the end of the game. He let one of his teammates stand between them. Reaves was almost thrown down by a linesman after that when he tried to go back after Buff. It was very clear that Buff was the one who wanted NO part of Reaves.

    • mthor24 - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:51 AM

I guess you missed the part where Byfuglien was wrestling with two Blues players for an extended period of time while also having Reaves hold on to him. Both were dead tired at that point and clearly didn’t want to go anymore, Trouba isn’t the type of guy to back down to anyone either so it’s a moot point..

      • wannabebluesplayer - Mar 18, 2014 at 10:37 AM

I guess you missed the part mthor24 when Buff basically choked out Bouwmeester by grabbing his sweater and pulling it back across his neck? Maybe that’s why the Blues were trying to pry him away.

      • jhaegs - Mar 18, 2014 at 11:16 AM

Blues won. Buffalo was just being a fat baby…

      • jhaegs - Mar 18, 2014 at 11:18 AM

Also, Trouba got thrown down by the “little guy with gumption”, Sobotka. He may not have backed down, but he got owned.

  9. wannabebluesplayer - Mar 18, 2014 at 10:40 AM

Correction, that was earlier. But still, Buff isn’t that scary to Reaves.

I LOOOVVEEE how the announcer talked about LaPierre not fighting. He’s such a pansy, all mouth but couldnt fight air pollution.

    • bluesdroogie - Mar 18, 2014 at 1:56 PM

i am a blues fan but I do not like lapierre

    • jhaegs - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:02 PM

Lapierre did have a full mount on his guy, and could’ve pummeled him at will. He chose not to, and the Jets player didn’t do anything until the refs pulled Lapierre off….

      P.S. Lappy is still a disposable player…

  11. pavelfitzgerald - Mar 18, 2014 at 3:27 PM

The hit looked fine to me, a big hit, but a clean hit. The St. Louis d-men teamed up on Buff before Little entered which is where it should’ve ended, but then Jackman was face washing Buff so he starts going & all hell breaks loose.
I think all of this was fine for the most part. A tough divisional game where St. Louis showed that they were better. What I don’t have patience for is LaPierre running his mouth & acting tough at the end of the game, especially when he wasn’t even doing anything in the corner.
