Video: Gaborik scores first goal with Kings, Bernier robs Kopitar but doesn’t begin second period

Mar 13, 2014, 11:44 PM EDT

Marian Gaborik, acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets at the NHL’s trade deadline last week, scored his first goal as a member of the L.A. Kings on Thursday.

His deflection on an odd-man rush gave the Kings the lead less than two minutes into their game against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Kings got out of the first period with a 2-1 lead, but it could’ve been more, if not for the play of Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier, who was making his return to L.A.

Bernier made an amazing right pad save on Anze Kopitar, who was looking at what was a wide open net off the rebound.

Bernier was removed from the game to begin the second period. James Reimer started the second period for the Leafs.

Yeah, that “lower body injury” is a grade 3 groin tear from that save. That save was ABSOLUTELY SICK!! AH, I CAN’T EVEN…

Seeing how Bernier stretches during HBO 24/7 I doubt he tore it. Guys in crazy good shape and was smiling and joking on the bench afterward… that said he didn’t return so who knows

Yeeeaah, it was a joke. The video clearly shows Bernier recovering and he even used that same leg to push back toward his left *after* that save. I hope the kid’s OK.

        That save, though…

Love the purple/gold. I wish they’d go back to that
