Sabres’ goalie Michal Neuvirth makes 51 saves against Hurricanes

Mar 13, 2014, 11:16 PM EDT

In a battle of two Eastern Conference teams well out of the playoff race, Buffalo Sabres goalie Michal Neuvirth gave fans something worth talking about against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Neuvirth saw a constant stream of rubber, forced to make 51 saves, but the Sabres still lost by a final score of 4-2. The Sabres, at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, have now lost four consecutive games. The Hurricanes, 13th in the Eastern Conference and six points out of a playoff spot, have a modest two-game winning streak thanks to Thursday’s result, although they’ve won only three times in their last 10 games.

But the big story on this night was Neuvirth, picked up in a late deal at last week’s trade deadline.

Oh great, sabre fans everywhere can rejoice. The rebuilding is over. Just stop 51 shots a game with no name goalies and you’re good. Wow. Great.

I wouldn’t call Neuvirth a no-name goalie. He’s won two Calder Cups in Hershey, played over 100 games in NHL, and has a playoff series win to his credit. Is he Miller? Nope. But Sabres fans actually should be pretty happy that they found a young goalie who doesn’t cost much, doesn’t mind Buffalo, and just wanted a chance to play.

They definitely should be happy about their goaltending. Between Neuvirth and Enroth, they have a couple of young tenders who are more than capable of helping the team through a re-build.

Nolan said that all Neuvirth needed was a little love. (though, a few less SOG might have helped, too)

I guess Halford was right. How Neuvy Got His Groove Back

Neuvirth was the reason that game wasn’t 6 or 7 to 2. The Hurricanes were getting lots of good scoring chances and Neuvirth was shutting them down. I thought he was excellent.
