PHT Extra: Are the Avs primed for a playoff run?

Mar 13, 2014, 4:59 PM EDT

We wrote about the Avs yesterday, and wouldn’t you know it, they went out and beat the Blackhawks for the fourth time in five tries this season.

Could Colorado be a legitimate threat to the defending champs in the playoffs?

Plus, we share our thoughts on the slumping Ducks:

I would like to say they can make a playoff run, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. The West is to good this year, and they would have to play the Blackhawks in the 1st round. Usually young teams that make the Playoffs for the first time don’t do to good. I think if the Avalanche were in the East they would have a great chance, but not in the West, not this year. I think the Avalanche will be good for a long time.

You bring up a very good point. Young teams need to lose in the playoffs to learn what it takes to win games in the spring. However, the bench boss is an exceptional coach, and they have beaten the Hawks 4 times this year. Getting out of the west conference will be a monumental task, and highly unlikely. I can see the Avs/Hawks series going 7 games, and we all know that game sevens can go either way. Home advantage will be huge in this one.

I’m an Avs fan so I’m biased, but based on this season, the only teams that really scare me are the Blues, Kings and Sharks and over the course of the season we’ve proven we can play with the Kings and Sharks, but not the Blues. Our last game against the Blues was a 2-1 loss with Miller in net, so it was an improved effort over previous games this season, but over the course of a 7 game series I think the young Avs make too many mistakes defensively to be able to win a series against them. With that said, people have been saying all year the Avs’ winning ways would be unsustainable, yet, here we are, a month from the playoffs and they’re still the biggest story in the league. While I wouldn’t put money on it, I wouldn’t rule the Avs out of any series – they have absolutely nothing to lose after the season they’ve had.
