Blue Jackets’ Comeau to face phone hearing after boarding Red Wings’ Smith

Mar 12, 2014, 1:21 AM EDT

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Blake Comeau will face a telephone hearing for a boarding hit on Detroit Red Wings blueliner Brendan Smith from Tuesday’s 4-1 victory for Columbus.

Sportsnet provides video of that check:

Comeau received a two-minute penalty for boarding and another minor for diving after Smith cross-checked him. Comeau, 28, hasn’t been suspended by the league in his NHL career so far.

It was the correct call anyway you look at it. All three calls were easy to make.

I was at this game. In addition to being a dangerous suspension-worthy hit, it was a really stupid penalty at a time when Jackets were scrambling and Bob was already getting shelled. Comeau has been a healthy scratch lately. I guess he was trying to make something happen. but this? I say two games.

I really like how the refs completely missed the cross-check to the ribs by Comeau later in the game that injured Jurco. I find it ironic that the night before the Blue Jackets were in Dallas to witness the Peverly incident and played such a nasty game against Detroit. I understand that it was an important game, but there were a lot of dirty-looking plays by Columbus.

There were dirty plays on both sides, I was at the game. How many times did a Wings player take a cheap shot after the play was over? You can’t knock both sides

You can’t knock only one side*
