PHT Extra: What happens if the Caps miss the playoffs?

Mar 11, 2014, 5:33 PM EDT

Ahead of their big game tonight in Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m. ET, on NBCSN), we discussed the Washington Capitals’ chances of making the playoffs for a seventh straight time, and what could be the consequences if they don’t.

Hey Jason, would you be a BROugh (see what I did there?) and get me Kay’s number…much appreciated.

  2. cdalton2690 - Mar 11, 2014 at 5:53 PM

GMGM has to be gone. Then rebuild this team, the only pieces worth saving are Ovechkin, Backstrom, Alzner, Carlson,Orlov, Ward and Chimera and Kuznetsov to give him a chance at least. Other than that start trading our buying out or trading players especially Mike Green and Brooks Laich too much money tied up for players who aren’t that good and are always injured. Doesn’t matter who the goalie is when the defense is this bad. Need big physical stay at home defensemen.

I would add Schmidt, Johansson, Wilson, and MAYBE Holtby to that list. I’d rather have Holtby long-term than Halak, and one of them’s gotta stay.

      • cdalton2690 - Mar 11, 2014 at 7:04 PM

I agree with Wilson and MoJo. Goalie im not overly concerned with yet because it could be Patrick Roy in net with this D and he even he would look awful. I don’t blame Holtby entirely.

Well, on Halak – if they miss the playoffs, I imagine he’d be entertaining offers from others. He’s a UFA and they’re a bad team. They may only have him for a few weeks in the end.

I think what will happen is Oates gets fired, a certain Russian will not notice bc he is swilling copious amounts of caviar and vodka, and a surprisingly loyal fan base will once again be cheated out of a post-season….

Hmmm my best guess is that if they miss the playoffs, they won’t win the Cup.

Wow, what a unique opinion. We here at PHT thank you for your valuable insight.

I believe that the same should happen if they do or don’t make the playoffs. No chance they make it out of the first round if they make the playoffs…..and that shouldn’t save this awful GM’s job.

Here’s what I wrote a few days ago.

    joey4id – Mar 7, 2014 at 3:59 PM

It’s time to make some changes…. Enough said about GMGM already.

Start by getting rid of the 30+ year old players and replace them with prospects. Start shopping Green. Untouchables should be, Backstrom, Wilson, Brown, Johansson, Carlson, Ovi (hold him for another 2 years). Everybody else on the trading block.

Pretty sure every Caps fan has been saying that, thanks for glorifying the obvious.

      • govtminion - Mar 11, 2014 at 10:58 PM

Same thing he always does- state the same stuff everyone else has been saying for ages, then quote himself a few weeks later to show what a hockey genius he is… then sign out, sign in as one of his half-dozen other names, and fawn over himself.

GMGM needs to go, but like everyone already knows that at this point.

They really need to get rid of Mike Green, his ineptitude of playing defense is baffling, and I have no idea why they keep him around. His ability to move the puck is nice, but that is it, and John Carlson can move the puck as well as him, but Carlson can actually play defense. They need to focus on shoring up the defense this off season. If decent offensive talent comes cheap then maybe snag someone, but as of right now the team is stacked on offense, even though they can’t seem to score half the time.

Oates isn’t a bad coach, but he is surrounded with players who for some reason love to give up when the going gets tough. There needs to be an influx of guys on the team with more of a “team before me” mentality. BB had the same issue, and that issue is upper management, not the coaches fault.

Also, yeah it was awhile ago, but I’m still sour they got rid of BB he was a solid coach and I have a feeling that was all GMGM’s doing and not Ted.

Well then they will be golfing….

  9. jonestocarr - Mar 11, 2014 at 10:02 PM

GMGM gone, Laich buyout, Oates probably gone with new management, but if not two experienced assistant coaches. Attempt to move Green or Carlson for a top 4 DEFENSEman.

  10. ovechcant - Mar 11, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Get a permanent second line center. It’s a revolving door and you have to be great up the middle to win in this league. You could get rid of green and laich and add some really nice pieces.

  11. therealjr - Mar 12, 2014 at 1:42 AM

    Spoiler alert: Nothing happens.

“Thank you Ted, may I have another?”

  12. stcrowe - Mar 12, 2014 at 9:43 AM

McPhee should be fired, but for reasons known only to him, and Leonsis, he probably won’t be. It is like Sather in New York. He has the undying faith of a team owner.
