Staal ‘definitely’ wants new Rangers deal sorted this summer

Having seen what Dan Girardi and Ryan Callahan went through this year, Marc Staal has no desire to replicate the experience.

“For me, the contract situation is definitely something I would like to take care of over the summer,” Staal told the New York Post. “That’s the goal, but that also has to be the way management looks at it, too, in order to get it done.”

Staal, 27, has one year remaining on his current five-year, $19.875 million deal and will be a UFA when it expires. The lure of free agency will be high for Staal, especially with the opportunity to join brothers Eric, Jordan and Jared in the Carolina organization sitting on the horizon.

That said, it’s not something Staal really wants to go through.

He saw first-hand this year the toll contract uncertainty took on Girardi — who was eventually resigned — and ex-captain Ryan Callahan, who was flipped to Tampa Bay in exchange for Martin St. Louis. The pair learned that Rangers GM Glen Sather is no easy man to negotiate with, often keen to utilize deadlines and important dates to his advantage in contract negotiations. (Sather also did this with Michael Del Zotto last season.)

Sather also took his time with the Henrik Lundqvist extension, waiting until this season to get a new deal done.

Staal, who the Post figures to earn somewhere between $5.5-$6 million annually on his next deal, wants no part of the rumor mill that engulfed Girardi and Callahan over the last month.

“I saw those two guys go through it with the negotiations and all of the rumors that are impossible to avoid if you’re on the last year of your contract, and it’s not something I really want to go through,” Staal said. “You can say all you want that it’s not on your mind and it’s not a distraction, but it’s something that has to weigh on you.”

Good for Staal, I hope he gets his deal done and stays a Ranger for a long time! Who knows, maybe he will be the next captain of the franchise!

      Totally agree on both !

I agree, whole heartedly. But it’ll probably be Girardi for captain next. Won’t be until next year obviously, but he seems to be everyone’s guy.

I would love to see the C on his jersey.

I actually had him figured to want to bolt to Carolina to play with his brothers. I’m surprised he is looking to stay with the Rangers. But I’m glad. I hope he gets his extension this summer.

The C would look good on him. It’s probably down to him and Richards, depending on if he doesn’t get bought out after the season.

def not richards, between staal, girardi, or mcdonagh

If Staal is a $6m per year D-man, I don’t want to know how much McDonaugh is going to cost…

    • lgm32 - Mar 10, 2014 at 1:28 PM

McDonagh signed for 6 years $28.2 million before this season

Thanks! Thought it was 4 for some reason and we’d be dealing with it sooner than later.

“The pair learned that Rangers GM Glen Sather is no easy man to negotiate with”…

    ….Unless you’re another NHL GM

Have 4 brothers ever played on the same team the same time?

    • 7mantel - Mar 10, 2014 at 8:17 PM

don’t know about 4 but there was the 3 Plager brothers who played for the St .louis Blues .

Whoa whoa whoa…..$5.5-$6 million annually? Really?

Only 24 defensemen in the NHL currently make more than $5 million a season, and only 15 make $6 million or more. Even less have cap hits that are that high. Marc Staal might be a solid stay at home defensemen, but he’s hardly top 25 material… especially with his lack of offensive ability and repeated injury problems. Hell, he’s not even a top 2 defensemen for the Rangers so why would they pay him as such?

Staal might ask for that much, but he’s not going to get that from the Rangers. If they are willing to give him more than $4.5 million a season I would be really surprised.

OK, are 90% of the Rangers fans on drugs? Or are they just retarded posers who know nothing about Hockey in general just like Gary B. Bettman? Sather should of traded this worthless bum (while his last name still carries some value) to Carolina for Mike Komisarek at the trade deadline. Let’s go over Marc Staal’s accomplishments as a Ranger:
    1. 1/3/2009- Marc Staal not only got his ass kicked by Alexander Semin, Staal turutled up to Semin’s sissy slaps (watch it on YouTube).
    2. How many times was Staal injured through out his career so far? Not only does he not know how to fight, he does not defend his teammates and he can’t even take a hit without getting a headache, but claiming to be a concusion.
    3. Staal can’t play defense. How many times does he screen Lundqvist?!?!? I myself lost count due to the fact that it’s at least once a game everytime he actually plays (don’t forget, Staal is out 50% of the season with so-called injuries).
    4. Staal is not a leader, and makes way too many defensive errors. Staal has no heart. I know hot women who are tougher, stronger, braver, etc. (Angel Amoroso, Lisa-Marie Veron, Gina Carano, Ronda Rousey just to name a few) than Marc Staal and would be more of an asset for the Rangers D than this worthless nimrod Staal! Actually, I think Miley Cyrus can kick Marc Staal’s ass.
Like I said if I were the GM of the Rangers, I would have traded Marc “The Turtle” Staal to Carolina for a REAL DEFENSEMAN who is from New York, has toughness, leadership, and will fight for his teammates and defend his team, known as MIKE KOMISAREK! Yet you retards want Sather to re-sign Marc Staal?!?!?!? WOW! At one time, New Jersey Devils fans were the laughing stock of the Hockey fans due to the sheer stupidity they possess. But now, the Rangers fans are tied with the Devils fans as being the retards in the world of Hockey fans.

I can’t tell if this is a joke or not…

      If not… Ahhh forget it…

Jose that’s a mouthful. Even though I believe Stall is a good defenseman (remember fighting is not everyone’s cup of tea) I agree with u in the sense he’s one hit away from retirement. I don’t think he gets that kind of money.
