Nolan gets a game for punching ‘unsuspecting’ Joensuu

Mar 10, 2014, 5:14 PM EDT

Kings forward Jordan Nolan has been suspended one game for punching “unsuspecting” Oilers forward Jesse Joensuu with “significant force” on Sunday.

In making the ruling, the league noted that Joensuu’s arms were tied up by the linesmen and that the scrum of players had “essentially ended” when Nolan decided to throw the punch. As such, it was “perfectly reasonable” for Joensuu to not expect to get punched. (Translation: Joensuu was not guilty of failing to properly defend himself.)

This isn’t Nolan’s first run-in with the league. In March, he was fined for cross-checking Vancouver’s Henrik Sedin.

Perfect! Anything less would have been bs and anything more would have been overkill.

    • goapher21 - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:31 PM

Yeah, one game is probably right but I think they should have made it two games to send a message. He could have broken his neck with a cheap shot like that.

      • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:43 PM

But! He didn’t. That’s the way the NHL works. The severity of the injury plays a factor in determining the length of a suspension. The only way he would of rec’d more games would be based on his history.

YES, BETTMAN KNOWS THE DEAL ! :)

As I wrote only yesterday … “Bettman knows the deal here and so he’ll likely give Jordan nothing more than some ‘obligatory’ warning or whatever ? … you know, ‘throw ‘em a bone’ as they like to say ! :) ” …

the bottom line friends is that hockey is a ‘man’s’ game which encapsulates the ‘male persona’ better than any other professional sport in existence today ! … strength, pride, courage, aplomb, daring, tenacity, ardor, resilience, fortitude, conviction and values are just ‘some’ of the skills required on the resume of a red-blooded ‘male’ hockey player … using basic Stransky analysis, one can quickly determine that the ‘majority’ of the posters on this thread are meterosexual fruitcakes who possess ‘large’ libraries of Liberace music … I mean seriously, who gives an ‘F’ if some guy gets punched in the head ? … it’s a complete joke and thank God Bettman ‘isn’t’ one of you people … jeeeeeeeeeeesh !

GO KINGS GO !! … GO PUNCHING GUYS IN THE HEAD !!!!!!

Joensuu hit him in the nuts right beforehand:

video or animated gif? A still doesn’t say much. His hand could have been falling past his waist from that shot.

Regardless, doesn’t give Nolan a green light to unload on him after all is said and done.

      • cambannedloinstache - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:36 PM

I agree; I dislike Nolan but just showing that it wasn’t exactly unmediated. No video but the FOX crew also acknowledged the ball shot

      • patthehockeyfan - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:00 PM

One more time, here’s the video:

      • mp1131211 - Mar 11, 2014 at 2:35 AM

OK, fair enough. He did grab it. Thanks patthehockeyfan for being the first one to post a video of it that I have seen. That said, I HIGHLY doubt that was intention in anyway seeing as how the next King player over had his entire forearm wrapped around Joensuu’s face and eyes. Not exactly “grabbing” his nuts. More like falling and his hands lands there.

    • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:45 PM

So! It doesn’t give a player the right to sucker punch a player. Swallow the pill and when you get the chance lay a clean body check on him.

      • timmyp716 - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:02 PM

So according to what your sayin is if someone came up to you and sucker tapped you in the sack you would do what? let him walk away? i dont think so. sucker punch for a sucker tap sounds fair to me

      • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:06 PM

So! According to you, if someone commits a rape, then that person should get rapped. Is that fair to you?

      • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:08 PM

If someone spears you, then you spear him. If someone high sticks you in the face then you high stick him in the face. If someone elbows you…… Well. You get what I mean. Is this fair to you?

      • timmyp716 - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:08 PM

        yeah…..in prison

      • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:10 PM

You’re much too deep for me. I don’t have that sense of deep thought yet. Perhaps I will one day when I’m as mature a you are. Right?

      • machosasquatcho - Mar 10, 2014 at 10:28 PM

        Shut up, blomfeld/joey4id.

What’s it like being so stupid?

      • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 11:04 PM

machosasquatcho, actually, you’re doing a good job of showing us what it’s like to be so stupid. 😊

      • machosasquatcho - Mar 10, 2014 at 11:21 PM

Yeah well no, not really. you have at least 5 different accounts, you have long-winded conversations with yourself and post arbitrary youtube videos, and you promote yourself on other forums as being a “PHT legend”.

So yeah, you’re kind of an obnoxious scumbag.

      • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 11:32 PM

Again you’re just showing us what stupid is. Now move along little man. Bedtime. 💋

      • machosasquatcho - Mar 10, 2014 at 11:42 PM

Haha. Oh Ron. So much effort to maintain multiple identities on this forum. Kind of impressive in a creepy sorta way.

How’s Brea this time of year? :3

      • valoisvipers - Mar 10, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Joey, Toss that machosasquatch troll a cookie so he can go back under his bridge (table in Mom’s basement).

      • joey4id - Mar 11, 2014 at 12:01 AM

valoisvipers, he pretends to know so much about me, which is a whole lot of BS but h’s asking me about Brea. Go figure!

macho, Brea at this time of the year is pretty much like it was at this time last year.

      • machosasquatcho - Mar 11, 2014 at 2:27 AM

lolol valoisvipers. White-knighting blomfeld? Not gonna get you laid, brah.

      • joey4id - Mar 11, 2014 at 12:15 PM

macho, you’re tripping over your own lies. How does that feel?

      • machosasquatcho - Mar 11, 2014 at 1:03 PM

when you switch between accounts, do you ever accidentally post as blomfeld when you’re trying to be joey? do you backtrack from this or just find the closest Elvis video and hope no one notices?

        moron, lol

      • joey4id - Mar 11, 2014 at 1:13 PM

        Yawn!

Unlike you I don’t screw up because I’m not playing a game like you are and you’re alter ego, angrytwitterguy. Where have you been hiding this guy?

        lol

      • machosasquatcho - Mar 11, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Yeah, it’s not a game with you, is it? It seems like it’s your life.

        Seek help.

      • joey4id - Mar 11, 2014 at 1:30 PM

says the care who’s more concerned about ripping into people then commenting about hockey. You don’t need help. Just stay sane.

        lol

        You sound mad, lol.

That picture sure looked like a shot in the nuts.

  3. bwayblueshirt - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:35 PM

BS. Thornton gets 15 games but this is only 1? Look I understand that Orpik got hurt and this guy didn’t, but it’s the same infraction and the punishment is not remotely consistent.

    • johnthebiscuit - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:39 PM

That’s because Shawn Thorton is a piece of scum.

      • bwayblueshirt - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:46 PM

Never suspended prior to the Orpik incident… Not saying that 15 games was too much, but the league is sending conflicting messages with these two suspensions. I would’ve given Thornton 10 games and Nolan 4-5.

    • patthehockeyfan - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:45 PM

Well, not really the same infraction. Thornton slew-footed Orpik to the ice before he started punching him.

I’ve maintained all along that I didn’t defend Nolan. Yes, he punched Joensuu. And, if sucker-punching means that the punch was unsuspected, then, yes, he sucker-punched him. No argument there. Whether it was Joensuu’s hand in Nolan’s groin area, or Joensuu’s cross check on Doughty that sent him flying over a prone Quick, I don’t know what set off Nolan.

If mp1131211 or others didn’t see the video I posted in a couple of stories, here it is:

      http://kuklaskorner.com/hockey/comments/video-jordan-nolan-will-have-a-meeting-today-with-dept.-of-player-safety

The video will most likely lead to another argument – which I’m tired of right now.

      • areaman714 - Mar 10, 2014 at 6:41 PM

Haven’t you been spelted enough for relentlessly trying to maintain other’s focus on Nolan’s bathing suit area. Give it a rest. Nolan is an ecumenical douche. He is not worth defending. This hurts the next Kings opponent as I am sure they want him on the ice.

    • joey4id - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:47 PM

The NHL, as stipulated in the CBA, reserves the right to asses the length of the suspension based on the severity of the injury sustained. The players have only themselves to blame for this one because they accepted the terms of the CBA.

  4. sjsharks66 - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:37 PM

You mean he grabbed his jewels while he was being mauled by 3 Kings players? That’s what the photo depicts clearly. Not so clear is his intention to purposely nail Nolan in the jewels. The intention of Nolan sucker punching him is clear as day.
Look, if he did in fact punch Nolan there. Why did Nolan have to pretend like he was done with the scrum and come back with a clear sucker punch?

Should the other player be suspended for accidentally touching another mans crotch while falling down? I think being that close to Nolans crotch is punishment enough. ;)

  5. sjsharks66 - Mar 10, 2014 at 5:42 PM

No, it’s because Thornton kicked Orpiks feet out from behind him, got on top of him and punched him twice on the ice. You can’t look at this and compare it to what happened with Thornton. There is a pretty big difference between the two.

  6. killerpgh - Mar 10, 2014 at 7:27 PM

I wasn’t expecting a possible fine but never thought a suspension would come from this. Vincent Lecavalier got nothing for his bare knuckle sucker punch on Malkin 2 seasons ago (mostly the same discipline committee). Pretty similar if the fact that the scrum has died down and the linesman has Malkin tied up in a defenseless position.

Is this not why the Oil have Luke? Next game….match him up with Nolan. Case closed.

    • thesportsjudge - Mar 10, 2014 at 9:32 PM

No way will Nolan throw with Luke.

  8. penguins87and71 - Mar 10, 2014 at 8:13 PM

Joensuu and Nolan are both at fault. They just have no respect for each other it’s despicable. First of all Joensuu shouldn’t have grabbed Nolan’s family jewels and Nolan shouldn’t have suckered punched Joensuu. If this happened on the street somewhere they would probably be both going to jail for battery. Seriously the lack of respect in the NHL is disgusting! Children look up to these guys as role models! What are they going to think when they see their idols behaving like this? They are going to imitate them!

  9. canuckinamerica - Mar 10, 2014 at 9:49 PM

thesportsjudge. Exactly. Let Luke lay into him a bit.

Can someone, anyone please find something productive for joey4id to do? Please?
He could sweep, shovel, pick up trash, sort bottles and other sorts of meaningless tasks, but it would keep him busy and get him out of his mom’s basement occasionally.
