Habs’ Gorges undergoes hand surgery, could miss remainder of regular season

Montreal suffered a major blow on Monday, as the club announced rugged defenseman Josh Gorges underwent surgery on his fractured left hand and would be out for the next four weeks.

With that timetable, it’s possible Gorges could be out for the remainder of the regular season. The Habs play their last game on April 12 against the Rangers — just over four weeks away — and the 29-year-old could end up missing as many as 18 games, having already missed Montreal’s last two (5-2 and 4-0 defeats to Phoenix and San Jose.)

Gorges is a vital part of the Habs blueline and will be difficult to replace. He averages over 21 minute per game and sits second in the NHL in blocked shots, with 173. He also serves as an alternate captain.

Montreal did pick up veteran defenseman Mike Weaver from Florida at the deadline, so that should offset the Gorges loss to a certain degree. Weaver played over 18 minutes against San Jose on the weekend.
