Caps score three times in under five minutes to avoid four-game skid

Mar 8, 2014, 9:55 PM EDT

The negative streaks were really starting to pile up for the Washington Capitals on Saturday, but that all changed in a dizzying span in which they scored three goals in about five minutes. They ended up riding that surge to a 3-2 win against the Phoenix Coyotes tonight.

Going into the third period, Washington seemed like it might be on the verge of being shut out for a second straight game en route to a fourth consecutive loss. Instead, they turned things around to give Jarsolav Halak (31 out of 33 shots stopped) a win in his Washington debut.

Karl Alzner opened the Capitals’ scoring 9:45 into the final frame:

Brooks Laich tied it up about 30 seconds later:

Finally, Troy Brouwer wrapped things up with a power-play goal, his 18th tally of the season:

To little surprise, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett was displeased with the defeat:

Friends, this is proof ‘positive’ that you Capitals don’t need Ovechkin and his selfish 10 million dollar ways ! … not today, not tomorrow, not ever ! … God speed and may it be that an ‘Ovechkin free’ future is now soon on the horizon for you guys ! … comrade Blomfeld

Could someone please tell me how to make a complaint against this a-hole dumfeld blumfeld and his stupid videos? His obvious longing to hook-up with Oveschkin has become so overwhelmingly boring and the fact that we have to have every single Caps article infected with his lust for Ovi is revolting. True hockey fans should not have to endure his never ending drooling over a man he will never get. This idiot child needs to get some sort of life.

Careful, babykaby. Making an unfavorable comment about blom will result in his (her?) calling you an unflattering name – as he did 10 times in another post (see link below). I can’t understand why PHT didn’t bar him after this.

In a post in a later article, he called for civility from other commenters. “I can call you names; but, all of you must be nice.”

He describes himself as a 54-year-old man. I don’t know of any 54-year-old men who use dozens of happy-face emoticons in their posts. I don’t know of any 54-year-old women who do, either. I do occasionally see happy faces in 14-year-old girls’ Facebook posts, though.

He and his alter-ego, joey, both have the proverbial hard-on for Ovechkin. Their constant posts about Ovi lead us to believe that your analysis could very well be correct.

If the Caps keep playing the way they did in the first 50 minutes, they’re done for the season.

If they play the way they did the last 10 minutes more regularly, they’ll be the first round opponent no one wants to see.

It should be very interesting to see which Caps team we see more of as we enter the final weeks of the year… the home-and-home against the Penguins coming up next is going to be huge for them.

If they stop feeling sorry for themselves after every bad thing that happen and had heart. They would
      be a great team.

Tighten up on defense, shot the puck, have faith and heart. Good things happen.

Brilliant insight dbag. Rags lost the next round 4 – 1. Get over it already, we have.

Blom… You’re an idiot. Your logic of “if Ovechkin is held off the scoreboard that means he’s useless” is bullish. I’m glad three clips convinced you he’s useless. Watch the WHOLE game then I’ll take your word. I did watch. I saw Ovechkin on the bench for both goals allowed (Pk and a breakaway on a busted line change). I watched Ovi in the PP not taking a single sniper shot, but actually passing off to the other point every time. EVERY TIME. he back checked. He hit hard. He covered the points. I had zero reason to complain about his game. But you’ve always seemed to have a personal vendetta against 8 so I’m not truly shocked by your comments…

      “Blom… You’re an idiot”

Blomfeld: Tiger One to Tiger Two, over ?

Tiger Two: Tiger Two here, over ?

Blomfeld: Tiger Two, blow that piece of junk off the bridge !

Tiger Two: Consider it done comrade ! … hail victory !

listen Rockhead … not only should the ‘parasite’ Ovechkin be removed from the Capitals roster asap, but as well his ‘misguided’ flock of followers including the likes of you, should be referred to a local state/provincial mental health authority poste haste ! … in nine ‘long’ years now you people haven’t gone past the second round once while this POS has done you over for at least US 80,000,000.00 ! … truly pathetic when you think about it … though worse is the fact that the goof still can’t make time to even visit a dentist !

      GO KINGS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blom- if you are so narrow minded that you are 100% convinced that one player is the sole reason a team wins a cup you have some issues. Name one other player on the Caps who is a great talent on O. Backstrom maybe but that’s it. Or a single defensive player who is great on this roster. Go on, I’ll wait…

The Caps haven’t made it past the second round for a plethora of reasons: questionable draft picks, switching coaches 3 times in a single season, absolutely no D, inability to attack free agency or make moves to improve the team at the trade deadline… And all you can point to is Ovechkin and what, his lack of defensive effort or his +/- (team stat that’s overused)?? It’s a cop out. It’s “all Russians are lazy and he’s had lackluster D so he is the scapegoat.” He may not have a cup but he has a ton of accolades and the city has embraced him. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon. And as a Caps fan? I have no qualms. I see excessive contracts like those of Mike Green and Brooks Laich as bigger issues than 8’s. But that would be too level headed of me to think that rationally when I have such an easy scapegoat in front of me!! Sad sad sad..

    • blomfeld - Mar 9, 2014 at 12:21 AM

“It’s all Russians are lazy” …

sorry pal, there you’d be wrong … many of my all-time favorite players are Russian and laziness was ‘never’ in their vocabulary ! … Tretiak, Maltsev, Kharlamov, Yakushev, Petrov, etc … great men who always played with courage, conviction, pride and dedication for team and country !

    • babykaby - Mar 9, 2014 at 1:28 AM

Can you imagine what kind of life dumfeld blumfeld must have if he spends so much time during his day to look for and find all these stupid videos, most of which that don’t make much sense in relation to the article. He was obviously dropped on his head more than once as a child, or maybe intentionally thrown on it.

Blumfeld. Please stop. As a 27 y/o die hard local sports fan suffering through a lifetime of watching the orioles, wiz and caps (thank god I grew up a ravens fan); Ovie is the best thing that’s happened to this team since 99. GMGM has had about 6 yrs to fix the defense and has done nothing except luck into 74 and pay that dumbass 52. We had an opportunity to address the defensive issue at the deadline and instead got a 3rd line power forward and swapped a drags goalies. Got nothing for erat after giving up a top prospect a year ago. Besides 74 he hasn’t had an impact player come from the draft since the lockout – Ovie, backstrom and semin. Ted needs to let this guy go. If Ovie and this team never get to a final or bring home the cup it’s solely on McPhee and leonsis.

  7. jb13521 - Mar 9, 2014 at 3:13 AM

I meant average goalies, not a drags.

  8. evilushun13 - Mar 9, 2014 at 1:15 PM

Pointing out that Ovi didn’t score and they won is just a statistic that is only useful if you are looking for it. How many times have they won in a game where he did score? This is coming from a Rangers fan! Has anyone ever heard of opening up the ice for other players? Crosby doesn’t score every time they win. Gretzky did score every time his team won (well he score way too much to look at his statistic on this. lol) Look at Hossa… he was seen as a cancer. Now he has two cups!

Blomfeld and Joey are most definitely the same person. I have been reading these boards for years now. There is no way they are not the same person. Dude, honestly your comment most of the time only have some weird association in your mind. Everyone else is lost on the one person inside joke.

Sorry i know my comment seems fragmented or scattered. I have things to do besides this.
