Luongo has Twitter fun at Canucks’ expense

Mar 6, 2014, 10:50 PM EDT

You didn’t expect Roberto Luongo to stay quiet as the Vancouver Canucks got shellacked just days after trading him, did you?

With the Florida Panthers off on Thursday, Luongo gained the opportunity to provide some typically amusing (and unfiltered) commentary for his former team, which turned out to be well-timed as things haven’t gone well for the Canucks as of this writing. Eddie Lack only made it through two periods of tonight’s contest against the Dallas Stars, as Tyler Seguin & Co. beat him five times on just 17 shots. Update: The Stars ended up winning 6-1, with Seguin getting a hat trick and two assists.

Which prompted this trio of tweets from Luongo (and it’s anyone’s guess if he’ll provide a few more pithy comments):

Maybe the more appropriate hash tag would be #PrayforCanucksFans.

My god he never runs out of jokes. This may be pushing it, Florida management might tell him to shut up a bit, but he’s absolutely hilarious. Says a lot about the character of the guy that he’s able to keep such a light attitude despite what’s been going on with him and how he was treated with the Nucks.

    • charlieconway96 - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:37 AM

Eh, I say let him take a few shots at the old ex before they shut him down. After all, she put him through the wringer.

    • 950003cups - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:48 PM

No they won’t. They’ll probably encourage him to tweet away. That organization is in desperate need of some attention.

  2. jovocop1989 - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:03 PM

    God I miss him

  3. bucrightoff - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:07 PM

He wasn’t joking with the PrayForEddie. He knows first hand that Eddie is in for a rough ride,

  4. stcrowe - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:07 PM

That really is hilarious. I just wish he would offer some jokes about the Brodeur-Schneider situation.

  5. jhaegs - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:08 PM

Classic Bobby Lou. I hope the Panthers win out the rest of the season…

  6. atwatercrushesokoye - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:28 PM

Technically it was their second game since he was traded since they played Phoenix Tuesday hours after trading him.

As for Lou, he was a great soldier while he was there despite the way Gillis treated him, he deserves to be able to take a few shots now that he’s gone.

    • James O'Brien - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:37 PM

      Fair point, tweaked it.

      • jhaegs - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:36 AM

        It was a stupid point…

  7. phatmat456 - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:34 PM

No one will care about what has to say next year

  8. chunkala - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:40 PM

How did everyone already forget how bad Luongo was?
He would have let up 8-10 goals if he had played.

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:47 PM

19-6-6 2.38 GAA (15th in the NHL) and .917 save percentage (tied for 13th in the NHL), those aren’t bad numbers.

      • dueman - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:06 AM

Keep telling yourself that chunkwala. All those Canucks fans that turned on Luongo are in for a rude awakening now that he’s gone!

      • laxnhockey - Mar 7, 2014 at 8:07 AM

They aren’t that good either; mediocre at best.

    • hockeyflow33 - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:09 AM

      Probably because he isn’t

great tune BLOMS ! men of a certain age and refinement do appreciate music like this, from a grand old era ! ….. that said , i do feel awkward complimenting you,as a few think we are one and the same person ! lol ! like PASQUINAL said to McKEE in CENTENNIAL ….. aye….we are what we are monami ! even when he knew he loved and desired CLAYBASKET ( his squaw wife ) ! your pal ( and not an alias ) …SLYSIPOPS !

      • blomfeld - Mar 7, 2014 at 10:22 PM

        Comrade Slysipops … you’re very welcome friend ! :)

For me, the Stone’s absolute ‘best’ period was 68-72 when great songs like this were produced along with other classics like Honky Tonk Woman, Sympathy For The Devil, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter, etc. Anyway, I too got a kick from these nerds accusing you, me, Joey, Thailer and at least 50 other guys here at PHT as being ‘one and all’ the same person. Of course they do that in a ‘lame’ attempt to get a reaction, such is their pathetic ‘station’ in life. However it is funny and ironically rather ‘complimentary’ in a way, don’t you think ? Take it easy and as your friend, I ask that you please consider ‘sitting out’ the coming fight between you Hawks and us Kings. It’s going to be a ‘horrific’ bloodbath with you Hawks ‘paying the devil’ to no end !

Reaks a little bit of sour grapes…No?

Yeah–Loui was in an unfortunate situation for awhile in Vancouver…but nobody put a gun to his head and forced him to sign that contract and there is no stopping Father Time. He just isn’t the netminder he once was–yet he was still be paid like he was. He’d be better served to not act like a jilted little bi*ch, rise above and maintain some class as he moves on to his new team. After all–he’s the one who wanted this, right?

    • stakex - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:13 AM

Oh come on, get the stick out of your butt….. its just a joke, and a funny one at that. Luongo is always good for a laugh, and considering he pretty much got what he originally wanted with this trade (not to mention was able to desert a sinking ship), I doubt there are sour grapes.

      • clarke16 - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:28 AM

It’s like a chick who incessantly whines about how unhappy she is–so you finally dump her… Then she spends the next six months twitting and tweating about how much it much suck to be your new GF. Like I said–sour grapes. He got what he wanted. Time to move on, Loui.

    • ibieiniid - Mar 7, 2014 at 8:24 AM

I’m with you clarke. I love Luongo, and won’t hold this against him, but it always does seem a little bit childish for a pro athlete to take out his frustrations on Twitter. (joking, clearly Lu’s way of taking out frustrations and… well… everything else. not a bad way to be)

  11. titansbro - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:05 AM

This guy seemed like the biggest DB in the world until that emasculation the Bruins put on him in the SCF. Since then I’ve kinda grown to like him. He’s pretty funny.

  12. canucks30 - Mar 7, 2014 at 12:40 AM

Unfortunately for Luongo, he will never see the playoffs again in Florida.

    • dueman - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:13 AM

I’m betting Luongo will see the playoffs before the Canucks do next!

      • pastabelly - Mar 7, 2014 at 9:48 AM

Who is Florida going to be leaping in the Atlantic Division anytime soon? Boston, Montreal, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Detroit, Ottawa? They will need to leap at least two of these teams and also hope the Metro Division only has three teams with a better record. The only thing keeping the Panthers from dead last is the mess that is the Sabres. There is a better chance of the Florida having the worst record in the NHL next season than there is them making the playoffs.

      • 950003cups - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:07 PM

It happened to the 2007 and 2008 NY Mets. They collapsed in consecutive years in Spetember to grant a playoff birth to two unsuspecting lucky teams

  13. 950003cups - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:18 AM

Bobby Lu must get a nice giggle knowing NJ robbed his former team for the guy who was supposed to unseat him, and now they have two goalies (who are very good especially Lack) buried in their creases taking grenades nightly.

  14. 950003cups - Mar 7, 2014 at 3:22 AM

Before Strombone’s next humorous tweet, he should realize that he’s playing for the Florida Panthers! If he plans on a post season sometime in his career, he better be prepared to average 46 saves per game for 82 games.

    • ibieiniid - Mar 7, 2014 at 8:25 AM

      the Devil[s fan] doesn’t sleep.

  15. 2qswing - Mar 7, 2014 at 8:26 AM

He should take all the shots at the front office he wants. But the boys in the room battled for him and with him for years. Even the times when his play was so-so. Just wish he’d make that distinction before he lets it fly.

  16. pastabelly - Mar 7, 2014 at 9:41 AM

#finallydumpedthatcontract – enjoy the sunshine and obscurity

    • 2qswing - Mar 7, 2014 at 10:49 AM

…and playing in front of 4,500 close friends reporters and relatives

  17. patshal - Mar 7, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Luongo was just giving lip service when he said, “obviously I’m a little sad to be leaving Vancouver.” He was just giving lip service. I’m sure he’s looking to start fresh in a new environment and his tweets r more proof of that.

  18. slysipops - Mar 8, 2014 at 4:45 PM

at first i thought the twitt ( tweet ,fart or belch or ? ) was a little bush league….but remembering what the situation was for him with the NUCKS ….go for it !maybe not the players …..but the organization deserves this and much more!
