Video: Caps, Flyers engage in another line brawl

Mar 5, 2014, 9:05 PM EDT

Wednesday’s Washington Capitals – Philadelphia Flyers game didn’t feature another goalie fight (yet?), but this Rivalry Right match is leaving little doubt that the two Atlantic Division foes don’t like each other.

It all started when Ryan Stoa and Luke Schenn got tangled up and the misunderstandings just piled up. Check out that odd and violent sceneĀ in this video of the latest line brawl:

Plenty of penalties went around after that exchange:

Paging Ray Emery… Paging Ray Emery…

  2. sjsharks66 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:22 PM

Bush league by the Flyers. Not sure how Sinmond’s did not get third man in. The ref’s were standing an watching it happen. Reminds me of the Emery situation. Are they afraid to break fights up or give the right penalties out? Also curious as to why Wilson was kicked out?

I was looking forward to all the physical battles and fights tonight. Too bad the Flyers had to take it one step further. Also too bad that the refs have to play favorites so far in the game. Ruins a perfectly good, physical rivalry game.

    • jbink2585 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:28 PM

BECAUSE IT WASN’T 3 rd man in why he didn’t get penalty. Take off THE HATER FLYERS GLASSES AND WATCH THE GAME. WILSON ISNT OUT

    • 7mantel - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:30 PM

let me guess , Penguin fan?

      • jbink2585 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:33 PM

@7mantel– if that was to me no IM flyers fan

      • 7mantel - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:34 PM

no you jumped in before I finished typing

    • macgrubie - Mar 6, 2014 at 7:37 AM

This sharks guy’s comments are jokes. And yes he’s a penguins fan which is makes it funny when he complains about the flyers being goonish. Just skip over his posts.

    • laxman1944 - Mar 6, 2014 at 8:48 AM

      “Bush league”…….that’s a good one

Shenn was tangled up with the other guys uniform and he got jumped.

      Save it Shark Boy

      • kastout11 - Mar 6, 2014 at 10:53 AM

Even though I really wanted someone to beat down Wilson, he showed some class by waiting for Schenn to get untangled before he started throwing punches. Wilson could have easily landed several punches before Schenn got untangled from Stoi.

    • kastout11 - Mar 6, 2014 at 10:50 AM

You are a moron and you obviously hate Philly. By the way, the Caps were the ones to drop the gloves and challenge the Philly guys after a clean hit by L. Schenn.

  3. capitalspowerkill - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:26 PM

How did Wayne Simmonds not get a match penalty for third man in? He basically was holding on to Erskine at the end of the fight while Lecavalier hit him.

    • flyerspsu - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:36 PM

he should have gotten one, but i think he didnt b/c it was Erskine fighting Lecavalier, a huge mismatch between one of the top HWs in the league and skilled guy who doesnt fight and it was essentially Simmonds saving his teammate from a mauling

      • bethgoesglobal - Mar 5, 2014 at 11:57 PM

I don’t know. Vinnie is a pretty big guy; he can hold his own.

      • sjsharks66 - Mar 6, 2014 at 12:12 AM

The commentators on NBC sure made it seem like Erskine was at a disadvantage. Because apparently Lecavalier had good fight with Iggy in the past.

To be honest, I have no problem with a player coming in to protect a star player. Just not when the gloves were already dropped and the star player was an aggressor in the situation. I expect that star player to fight. Either take the ass kicking or come out as the “under dog” in the fight.

      • flyerspsu - Mar 6, 2014 at 9:34 AM

Erskine is one of top 5 HWs in the league, he tko’d orr in his last fight and has handed guys like Lucic the worst losses of their career, Vinny is not a good fighter and it was a huge mismatch that only could have ended badly for Vinny, also I don’t see how Vinny was the aggressor in any sense

      • sumkat - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:21 AM

What were you watching that Lavy was an aggressor?

Erskine went out of his way to NOT fight Simmonds and go after Lavy (who if you hear the announcers tell it “caused the escalation”)

Punk move by Erskine, I’m glad he got clocked

  4. rockthered1286 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:26 PM

And a bogus omitted penalty for third man in on Simmonds. I don’t see anyway they do not call that. He literally held Erskine’s arms down so VLC could get a clean shot. Good job zebras.

    • jcantwell82 - Mar 6, 2014 at 9:45 AM

They were given match penalties, so by rule Simmons was not a third man in. But, what do the refs know, they actually have read the rule book

  5. jbink2585 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:32 PM

SIMMONDS WAS ENGAGED WITH ANOTHER GUY why it wasn’t third man in look up the rules, you just want third man in because Vinny took shot at ERSKINE, but Caps guy was holding Simmonds feet it was a line scrumish one big group stop begging

    • kotteintheslot - Mar 5, 2014 at 11:11 PM

46.16 Third Man In – A game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player who is the first to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation. This penalty is in addition to any other penalties incurred in the same incident.

      • storminator16 - Mar 6, 2014 at 6:50 AM

“shall be imposed on any player who is the first to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation”

That is it right there. Even makes the fact that the refs didn’t allow someone to jump into the Emery-Holtby fight more silly. However, one of those chumps on the Capitals should have just jumped in on that in the first place. Silly Capitals, I can never fault Emery for that one.

  6. flyboystransport - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:33 PM

If youre tied up with a player you cant get third man in if ur tied up with someone else…..

  7. alicesrightfootesq - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:33 PM

    Wayne Simmonds is a joke.

    • jbink2585 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:39 PM

      19 g 30 a -3 yes sheer comedy he is get a clue

    • sheckyrimshot - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:21 PM

      thats racist

      • bethgoesglobal - Mar 6, 2014 at 12:05 AM

How is that racist? There was absolutely nothing that he said that made any reference to Simmonds’ race. In fact, you would never know what his race is based on alicesrightfoot comment.

Relax, and maybe get a dictionary.

      • sheckyrimshot - Mar 6, 2014 at 1:48 AM

        that’s racist, beth. unabashedly racist.

      • storminator16 - Mar 6, 2014 at 6:51 AM

        Not sure if serious…

    • flyerspsu - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:28 PM

not sure how Simmonds is a joke here, he stepped in and saved his teammate from a mauling from one of the top heavyweights in the league

      • storminator16 - Mar 6, 2014 at 6:54 AM

Yeap, he showed Capitals players how to react when your guy is getting pummeled: he wasn’t going to stand there do nothing like the Capitals did during that Emery/Holtby beat down. :D

Also, Glass Lecavalier really needs to stop fighting.

    • sumkat - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:25 AM

lol, Simmonds TRIED to fight Erskine TWICE in that scrum. He wanted no parts and went after Lavy, and Simmonds is the joke?

He has his flaws, but he’s a flat out beast with the puck on his stick, and NOBODY wants any parts of him dropping the gloves. I’ve rarely seen anything like it, since people would just fall down instead of fighting Schultz

  8. sizzle299 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:47 PM

Atlantic Division foes? It’s a two sentence article, is 3 seconds too long to spend proof reading?

    • mp1131211 - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:16 PM

      What do you care?

  9. ufostomper - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:49 PM

Oh boo hoo, a team that likes to hit and fight and score oh no! God did hockey become a wussy sport when Crosby came into the league or what?

  10. 7mantel - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:50 PM

Cap fans should be angry at their team for not showing up for this game after losing the the lead and game the other night ! 8 shots on goal by Caps ?

  11. jucam1 - Mar 5, 2014 at 9:59 PM

I remember when the Caps and their fans had a spine, but I guess the Flyers will just have to settle for manhandling the whiners…. Waaaaaaaaaa

  12. whatchutalkinabouthillis - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:09 PM

You have to be an idiot to mess with Wayne Simmonds, he is one mean son of a b****. It seems Vinny was always a Flyer, he just didn’t know it. I hope both of them finish their career in Philadelphia.

  13. boooflyers - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:15 PM

I watched 3 flyers attack one caps player that’s not hockey flyers cant win by playing hockey they have to beat people to win but give a stick and pads and to me and ill beat people up too

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 6, 2014 at 1:12 AM

Pretty sure they’re second in the division… you don’t win games based on the number of people you beat. The Flyers play HOCKEY, which involves both scoring and physicality. And they’re successful at it. If you don’t like it go watch the NBA.

    • sumkat - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:27 AM

lol, Erskine went after Lavy, and got thrown down. Nobody threw a punch at him. You have an odd idea of what an “attack” is.

Let me break it down for you, if you come running at me, and I punch you in the mouth, I defended myself, I didn’t attack you. Just because you are dumb enough to try to fight when it’s 1 against 3, doesn’t make the 3 the ones in the wrong

  14. joey4id - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:19 PM

Why were Lecavalier and Erskine ejected from the game? I don’t get it. Fighting is part of the game, but they get ejected. This show was much better than Olympic hockey. Right?

    • storminator16 - Mar 6, 2014 at 6:58 AM

      First: secondary fight.
      Second (Olympic hockey): doesn’t matter.

  15. boooflyers - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:19 PM

40 seconds in there are 3 flyers on one cap

    • sumkat - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:29 AM

38 seconds in there, 3 Flyers standing there (2 that can fight, and Lavy), and Erskine takes a run at Lavy

The other 2 should just stand there and watch?

  16. flyerspsu - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:25 PM

Erskine is one of the top HWs in the league and he was fighting Lecavalier … it was right for Simmonds to step in and save him

should have Simmonds gotten a 3rd man in? probably, but it was the right move to step in there

    • sumkat - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:32 AM

if he was on of the “top HW’s in the league”, he would of accepted Simmonds challenge and dropped the gloves with someone else who can do it. Not refuse to fight twice, then take a run at Lavy. That’s really early career Danny Carcillo of him (aka, spineless)

    • flyboystransport - Mar 6, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Cant get 3rd man in if you are already engaged with another player like simmonds was.

  17. luvusa1 - Mar 5, 2014 at 11:11 PM

@booflyers: Moron. Based on your idiotic post and run on sentences, you’re as dumb as they come. Go away.

  18. schneider99 - Mar 6, 2014 at 1:02 AM

I’m really surprised that Simmonds didn’t get third man in after grabbing Erskine. That being said, the Caps have nobody but themselves to blame for not winning the game. Not a fan of either team btw, just stating my opinion.

  19. laxman1944 - Mar 6, 2014 at 8:54 AM

Erskine was on a mission to detroy as many Flyers as he could last night and had NO interest in playing a hockey game.

    • sumkat - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:30 AM

as many as he could not named Simmonds. He wanted no parts of him, he wanted to go after the guy with the least fighting skill on the ice. Twice before he fought Lavy, Simmonds challenged him, he wanted no part

  20. etjla - Mar 6, 2014 at 12:33 PM

No wonder this team hasn’t won a thing in almost 40 years. First their AHL team has an entire line fight a couple weeks ago now this. They’d be better off moving the organization to roller derby.

  21. flyboystransport - Mar 6, 2014 at 12:36 PM

Making more rivalries with the realignment is what caused this. Cant wait for the playoffs when intensity is raised!!!!
