Only hours after the Tampa Bay Lightning “honored his request” with a trade, Martin St. Louis will debut for the New York Rangers tonight at Madison Square Garden versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.

While much of the attention will be focused on St. Louis — as well as the absence of the player for whom he was traded, former Rangers captain Ryan Callahan — it can’t be overlooked that this is an important game for both teams, each of which could still miss the playoffs.

The Rangers enter the contest on a two-game losing streak, including Sunday’s 6-3 defeat to the Bruins. The Leafs, meanwhile, are winless in their last three, including Monday’s 2-1 loss to Columbus.

Here’s what the standings look like:

I never thought I’d be wishing for St. Louis to fail but this whole thing has left a really bad taste in my mouth. Not that I pretend for a minute to know what really went down in Tampa, but the whole situation doesn’t seem right.

Vigneault said St. Louis will play with Richads and Hagelin tonight, and the Rangers will go with three alternate captains until the end of the year. Couldn’t hear the question from the room, but, based on Vigneault’s answer it appears that Girardi will be the third alternate.

Not a fan of keeping only 3 A’s but makes sense considering Richards could still be bought out and Staal might have just one more year left. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Girardi get the C in the offseason.

As for lines, I’d like to see Hags and Kreider switch places for a Hagelin-Stepan-Nash and Kreider-Richards-St. Louis combo. Once Zucc comes back, our top 9 could be in real good shape.

Maybe Richards will be “inspired” by playing alongside his former teammate.

As soon as St. Louis missed that wide open net last night, Yzerman said “Trade him!”…

Completely ignoring the actual hockey aspects of this, I really think, what with Dwight King playing for LA, St. Louis really should be with the Blues, and Paul Ranger with New York.

At least Fowler is with the Ducks…

Good that the Lightning got rid of the cancer that was spreading through the team
When the captain of the team thinks more of himself than the mates that he pretends to support, it is time for him to go.
The Lightning ( Steve Yzerman ) have pulled off a GREAT trade ! They gave up an aging one trick pony ( scoring ) and have got 2 wonderful draft picks and an accomplished 2-way player. This is how you build hockey teams.
