Minnesota lands Moulson, McCormick from Buffalo (Updated)

Mar 5, 2014, 3:25 PM EST

According to reports, Minnesota and Buffalo have combined on a deadline day blockbuster for the second straight year.

The Wild have acquired forwards Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick from the Sabres in exchange for Torrey Mitchell and a package of draft picks, according to the Buffalo News.

Update: Full deal, per the News’ John Vogl…

The deal came in after the deadline, so specifics are still unclear. What is known is that, should the report be accurate, the Wild will have acquired both Moulson and Jason Pominville from Buffalo in consecutive seasons.

Moulson had 11 goals and 29 points in 44 games with the Sabres after being acquired from Long Island early in the season. The three-time 30-goal scorer will add major punch to a Minnesota lineup that already includes the likes of Pominville, Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu, Mikael Granlund, Nino Niederreiter and Dany Heatley — in fact, Moulson’s 17 goals this year puts him third on the Wild behind Pominville and Parise.

Evidently Buffalo has another move coming. I’m guessing Halak to Calgary?

    • thailer35 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:35 PM

      Deadline has passed.

      • thailer35 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:50 PM

But obviously information has not all come out yet. Facepalm.

    • joey4id - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:39 PM

      Close! Halak to Caps.

    • joey4id - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Millard on Sportsnet just reported (but unconfirmed) that Neuvirth and a 6th round pick went to Sabres for Halak

  2. nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:31 PM

Vanek went to MTL for a pick and a prospect….

Soooo…… Why did we go after Moulson? I feel like we are going to sign Vanek in the summer and Moulson will walk anyways… Am I missing something? Thoughts?

    • credible316 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:38 PM

      Cap space.

      • nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:42 PM

We still had approx. 3 million-ish in salary we could have taken on without dumping a player. That combined with a player (Brodz?) could have just about equaled out.

    • findthetwine - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Ummm… because if he is going to sign here in the summer, why would the Wild give up assets to get him now?

      • nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Idk smart guy, why did they give up more assets than what it took to get Vanek in order to bring in Moulson who will also be a FA this summer? Gave up more for a lesser player…

      • strictlythedanks - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:45 PM

hardly a lesser player nvandy. More of a hardworker as well.

      • nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:58 PM

So, do you think there is room for both Moulson and Vanek? Was Moulson only aquired to make a playoff push? How do you think this affects our approach towards FA this year? I just dont see a world where we would have both..

      • mikebel11 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:14 PM

        1. Thre draft picks haven’t been reported yet so you don’t know who have up more for whom.
        2. The Canadiens gave up Collberg in the deal who’s one of the most highly rated European prospects around, which is something you can’t say for Torrey Mitchell.
        3. There’s no guarantee Vanek signs in Minnesota. The feel good story isn’t always what happens. Just ause a player played college hockey somewhere doesn’t mean he wants to play there forever.
        4. It wasn’t Minnesota’s choice whether they get Vanek or not, it was New Yorks

      • greatmiamisportsmind - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:59 PM

No just because you played at the university of Minnesota doesn’t mean you going to play their. However, when your wife is from Minnesota, you own your home in Minnesota, and there is mutual interest on both sides (Vanek and Wild), and they have the cap space to get it done…

      • spacealbatross - Mar 5, 2014 at 8:56 PM

Hey Wild Fans You are up against the cap. Yeah you have Heatlys $7 million coming off the books. But Vanek will want at least that much on a 7 year deal. You forget about all the young guys you have coming up or are up Croyle, Granlund, who will need large deals soon. Then whats the plan? Just rely on Suter, Pomminville, Parise, Vanek until they are all in their late 30′s or early 40′s?

  3. strictlythedanks - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:33 PM

Love this trade for the wild. Always been a fan of the way Moulson plays.

  4. yetidad - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Good trade. Heatley is done after this season so the Wild should try and keep Moulson. The Pomm connection cannot but help.

    • nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:40 PM

There is no Pomminville connection. There is a Pomminville-Vanek connection(they played on the same line in Buf). Moulson never played with Pommer, as he was traded from NY this year as part of the package for Vanek

  5. credible316 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Is Moulson in the last year of his deal?

    • nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:40 PM

      Yes

  6. slickvb82 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:52 PM

@nvandy42 regarding the above about why they would do this over Vanek. They gave up Mitchell, a 4th line energy guy that produces NO offense and “picks” unknown at the moment. That could be a 2nd and maybe their 4th?? Idk. Either way, we had a second 2nd round pick, in a weaker draft so why not use it in hopes he signs.

With that, Montreal gave up a prospect, something that Fletcher AND the fans didn’t want to do. So to your question above, we actually didn’t pay more for a “lesser player”.

Not to mention Moulson is 26 compared to Vaneks….30? Is he? I don’t know but I like this a lot.

    • rycoem - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:11 PM

Moulson is 30 yrs old and a UFA…if he was only 26 he’d likely still be a Sabre

      • slickvb82 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Sorry, you’re right, he is 30. Not sure where I got 26. Vanek is a UFA too, and my main point was we gave up much less to get a top 6 forward.

  7. rjt34 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:58 PM

@nvandy42- Vanek along w Pomer WERE my neighbors.. Vanek isn’t coming back here to Buffalo. His house is for sale, he’s from Minnesota, his wife’s sister lives there now w young kids. Vanek has 3 young kids & his wife wants to be back in Minnesota with her sister & Thomas wants to be there too. He turned down a 7yr/$50 mil deal with the Islanders 2 wks ago. He’s made $55 million already w the Sabres.. He’ll take less to play in Minnesota, he’s prob got $20-$30 mil in the bank already. He lives humble for a guy making $7mil a year. Look for him to land in Minnesota, that’s the word in “the hood”.. Plus he lived next door to Pomer when they both were here & the best of friends & Pomer just signed extension to stay in Minnesota..

    • nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 8:07 PM

good insight, thanks!! Thats kind of what I was getting at. I just don’t understand why the Wild wouldn’t go after Vanek now when it’s all but certain he is coming to MN. Don’t get the Moulson thing. But hey, who knows… Maybe we’ll keep both…. =/ haha.

    • thesportsjudge - Mar 5, 2014 at 10:44 PM

He’s not “from” Minnesota. If he were, I would think he would have donned a different Olympic jersey.

      • getadealdonealready - Mar 6, 2014 at 10:20 AM

No he isn’t from here, but this is where he played college hockey, I know a couple of his college teammates he still keeps in touch with regularly who are from MN. He considers this his second home, has lots of family and friends that live here. It will be interesting to see what the Wild offer, but my guess is he will take less to play here as well.

  8. purpleguy - Mar 5, 2014 at 5:06 PM

Mitchell wanted out, this year’s draft is weak and it was the Jets’ 2nd rounder anyhow (for Seto); however, including a second rounder in 2016 hurts a bit for a 30yr old rental guy. Mitchell wanted out and now he’s stuck on an non-playoff team — be careful what you ask for.

Don’t know much about Moulson but there’s a good (albeit old) write up on him from 09. Sounds like a guy who has worked incredibly hard to make it to and in the NHL. I’m happy the Wild were able to trade for him. Hopefully it pans out and he sticks around for a while.
