Panthers trade Tim Thomas to Dallas

Mar 5, 2014, 2:26 PM EDT

Turns out a Tim Thomas-Roberto Luongo goalie tandem was too good to be true. The Florida Panthers have traded Thomas to Dallas, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Thomas has had an up-and-down season since returning to the NHL. The 39-year-old leaves the Panthers with a 16-20-3 record and .909 save percentage.

In Dallas, Thomas will battle Kari Lehtonen for the starting role. Lehtonen has had ups and downs of his own this season. (In November, we wrote a post calling him the most underrated goalie in the NHL. At the time, his save percentage was .932, which has since fallen to .916, possibly because we totally jinxed him.)

That being said, Lehtonen’s job is likely still his to lose. The Stars are in a desperate fight to make the playoffs, and the difference between a capable and no-so-capable backup could be the difference between making and missing. The reported return for Thomas is Dan Ellis, who’s signed through next season for a cap hit of $900,000.

Thomas, 39, is a pending unrestricted free agent.

God I love Robert Luongo. Guy is absolutely hilarious.

    • lowenni - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:34 PM

And on the deal itself, guessing Dallas wanted to solidify their backup position behind Lehtonen while they’re making a playoff push. Doubt Thomas is there next year.

Well, I guess that avoids some serious awkwardness.

  4. rbbbaron - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:30 PM

They couldn’t promise to meet his demand for a date with Michele Bachmann.

Joey4id be like…..”I just got off the phone with Tim Thomas, he still hates Obama and loves hockey, that is all PHT”

Battle for the starting job? I take it you don’t know/care about the Stars…

  9. dropthepuckeh - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:39 PM

Great backup plan going into playoffs. If they make playoffs.

  10. nj666 - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:44 PM

he probably refused to go to any hockey teams in blue states…

  11. jcmeyer10 - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:48 PM

The friendship he and Seguin had in Boston can now blossom like it was meant to.

  12. darksidecowboy - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Dan Ellis really stunk up the joint last night against the BJ’s, not surprised Nill made this move. Have a solid backup who has been there before.

    • storminator16 - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:53 PM

Sounds like Ellis is going to the Panthers. Nice.

Good luck to Thomas and I was disappointed in the many fans in Boston last night who had the nerve to boo Thomas. He was a major factor in the first Cup in 40 years in Boston and deserves better. As far as the Luongo move goes, it makes little sense for a team in a rebuilding mode. They looked like an AHL team last night and their talent level is just so low.

That reaction in Boston is simply a reflection of the low class clientele who attends those games, which is simply a reflection of the low class area they come from. If it were not for Tim Thomas standing on his head, Boston would still be without a Cup. Just a bunch of ingrates.

    Aww, someone’s tires got popped.

In all seriousness, this woulda been awkward, hairy, and coulda gotten ugly really quick with those two ego’s.

    • hockeyflow33 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:12 PM

      Umm what egos?

This TT experiment was a flop and waste of money from the get go as I wrote back in Sept. Don’t make me go back to my old posts….. because I will if need be. ;-)

      go away (again) joey

  16. rbbbaron - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:24 PM

Tim Thomas bobblehead night was scheduled for Sunday…
(they can just change the name at the bottom, those things never look like the guy they’re supposed to be anyways)

    • thailer35 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:05 PM

That is awesome. I hope they still give them out.

    • greatmiamisportsmind - Mar 5, 2014 at 5:10 PM

I hope they mailed them all to the White House

Too good to be true haha

  18. joey4id - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:31 PM

During the press conference with Luongo in Sunrise a journalist alluded to the fact that upon hearing of the Luongo trade Thomas went to Tallon and asked to be traded. I guess he couldn’t get past the tire pumping exchange between them.

    • laxnhockey - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:15 AM

Joey still needs a life. Can’t ANYone help him?

I’m sure that’s “tire pumping” is a big concern for TT, with the Stanley Cup, Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophies he won while going against Luongo.

      What an idiot.

  19. mgp1219 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:45 PM

    Thomas is a petulant brat.

  20. slysipops - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:46 PM

wasn’t there a story about FLORIDA saying they were not trading THOMAS a short time ago ? oh well , i guess it’s like some jerk saying ….you can keep your insurance if you like it …… trust in no man !

  21. stickbewooden - Mar 6, 2014 at 3:26 AM

TT will be likin’ Texas…trust me…

  22. laxnhockey - Mar 6, 2014 at 11:17 AM

This instantly makes Dallas a strong contender for the post season.
