Montreal wins Vanek sweepstakes (Updated)

Mar 5, 2014, 3:31 PM EDT

The Montreal Canadiens have emerged the victor in the Thomas Vanek sweepstakes, acquiring the Islanders winger in exchange for second-round pick in ’14 and prospect Sebastian Collberg, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.

Update: The Habs also receive a conditional fifth-round pick from the Islanders.

Update 2: More on the conditions of the draft picks in play, per ESPN…

Initial reactions to the deal haven’t been stellar, as Isles GM Garth Snow paid a small bounty to acquire Vanek in the first place: Matt Moulson, a ’14 first-rounder and a ’15 second-rounder.

In return, the Isles are now (probably) getting a second-rounder in this year’s draft and Collberg, a second-round pick himself — 33rd overall at the ’12 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old Swede currently plays for Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League, and has represented Team Sweden at the last thee World Junior tournaments (where he’s won gold and a pair of silver medals.)

A few reactions to pass your way…

From the Montreal perspective, this deal has to be seen as a win. The club added a high-impact, goalscoring forward without surrendering a first-round pick or roster player.

Vanek has 21 goals and 53 points in 60 games this year — he’ll bolster an already good offensive team that has eight 10-goal scorers at forward (led by Max Pacioretty, who has 29).

That is a horrible set of trades for the Islanders…good think Moulson wasn’t a fan favorite and like best friends with the young captain or anything, or this would all be awkawrd and embarassing, eh?

    • bcisleman - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Part of the reason for the trade was to get the young captain to take his game to another level and he did.

      • newjerseydevilsfanpuckcollection - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:29 PM

What a waste, Garth Snow has ran this team into the ground time and time again.

How much longer can Tavares take this stuff.

For him to elevate his game to the next level would be to have some team mates that can play alongside him.

If any team out there wants to beat the Isles, all they have to do is put their top shut down line out there, and maybe have 2 players cover Tavares, because the other players on the ice will not be a threat anyways,

I’m shocked Snow didn’t trade Tavares for a conditional 5th and a bag of pucks since he is injured right now.

Maybe Vancouver can do a trade with a NY team for GM’s this time instead of coaches. Presume that it couldn’t be any worse for either team.

    • sabatimus - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:49 PM

Snow should be fired for the entire Vanek situation. Period.

    • c9castine - Mar 5, 2014 at 11:27 PM

God this is some of the most awful managing I have ever seen. This sebastien Colberg guy just got a heap of pressure dumped on him.

  2. nvandy42 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:33 PM

He’s going to MN in the summer… Take a run while you can I guess…

  3. imgoingtowichita - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:33 PM

Terrible Garth. Should be your last ever deadline deal!!

    • yougotgirouxed - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:24 PM

Isn’t this exactly what the Phillies did with Hunter Pence?

  4. bucrightoff - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:34 PM

Garth Snow is a total moron. Marc Bergevin on the other hand, he’s pretty good.

  5. credible316 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:35 PM

Yikes, not exactly the return he was hoping for. Especially since he gave so much to get him. OUCH!

  6. storminator16 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:36 PM

I like Garth Snow but this is epic! Epic, in a bad way.

  7. rsl22 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:37 PM

How does Snow have a job? Amazingly, Millbury may not be the worst GM in Islanders history….

    • newjerseydevilsfanpuckcollection - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:30 PM

      Exactly what I was thinking,

    • sabatimus - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:54 PM

To think that might actually possibly be true. Snow over-trades FOR Vanek, then GIVES him away. Is Snow that intent on crippling the Islander organization?

  8. powerpop18 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Good heavens, HNIC wonders how can Snow still have a job after this?! He is truly # 1 in the NHL as worst GM.

  9. bcisleman - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:41 PM

Not the return hoped for but it was obvious that Vanek was a rental. Collberg is a very solid prospect with top 6 potential. One intangible is that JT & KO greatly improved their games in a way that might not have happened w/o the trade.

    • angrytwitterguy - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Are you somehow attempting to defend Snow again? “But it was obvious that Vanek was a rental”? If it was obvious to Snow, he wouldn’t have traded so much to get him.

You’re one of the few Isle fans here, and you can’t even muster enough to say what everyone already knew a long time ago?

Snow is the worst GM in the NHL and has done far more to hurt the team than help.

    • hockey412 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:45 PM

I don’t think he thought it was obvious Vanek was a rental until after he refused his offer – it was just too much to gamble on in the first place. If Vanek had another year on his contract, ok.

    • sabatimus - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Clean those glasses, they’re all fogged up.

  10. angrytwitterguy - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:41 PM

This is what you get when you allow an unqualified buffoon run a NHL franchise.

Seriously, the only supporters Snow should have left is family.

    • imgoingtowichita - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:09 PM

I’m not defending either of the Vanek moves, he got schooled (or perhaps lit up a more fitting term).

He has done well at the drafts (increasing picks, trading down cause his D prospect was no longer available – Pietreangelo and not selecting Zherdev) and restocked a barren farm system. His waiver wire pick ups (McDonald, Grabner, Nabokov) have been okay. This is a black mark that he gambled on. Vanek chose not to sign a $50/7yr contract. Snow should have been focused, even now to shore up the lack of true NHL goaltending either today or coming in the future (Fucale from MTL and forget about the 2nd round would have made more sense).
I agree with BC that 21 & 91 started to take off with him along side (I have them both in fantasy – it was THE top line in hockey once they got back off that western swing).

To say, as someone above has that he was worse than Milbury than you don’t know your facts and are just headling grabbing!

  11. gwood83 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:44 PM

My heart sank when I heard about the vanek deal. Well done. -wings fan.

  12. bleedrangerblue - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:45 PM

I love Garth. All us Ranger fans do….

  13. montrealbbr - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:47 PM

I LOVE THIS! Combined with the fact that Pittsburgh and Boston did nothing means the Habs chances in the East just got a lot better!

    • hockey412 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:56 PM

I hate you, and I hate the fact that what you say is true.

    • imgoingtowichita - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:26 PM

They did get better but we’re pretty slim to begin with. Remember how they were manhandled last playoff season? How much really has changed for Les Habitants?

    • dropthepuckeh - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:55 PM

So true unfortunately. Add the fact that Vanek seems to excel against the Bruins and this is ugly. I never even heard Montreal mentioned in possible scenarios. Disappointing trade deadline for the Bruins.

  14. joewilliesshnoz - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:48 PM

Someone tell me why Shero couldn’t beat this deal ? Pens are loaded with young defensemen, and they let the Hab’s steal this guy.

  15. runhigh24 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:49 PM

This is what happens when you make your backup goaltender the GM

  16. thomasvanek - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:49 PM

I need to brush up on my French!

  17. gratescott - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:54 PM

Player trade deadline is done, but we hear the “GM” trade deadline is 4pm. Would anyone give us a bag of pucks for Garth Snow? They don’t even have to be new ones.
    Regards,
    Steaming Mad Islander Fans

  18. mega1480 - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:54 PM

I hear Darcy Regier is available, he at least makes good trades, just don’t let him sign high priced free agents….I’m looking at you Leino

  19. therooneyskilledwebster - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:02 PM

Vanek is the non-runt of the Habs litter

  20. drewsylvania - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:17 PM

This should get Snow fired. Idiot all around.

  21. arrooo - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:28 PM

Disgusting what this organization has become.

  22. lefty122 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:28 PM

Wang is like Obama……..neither one can fire incompetence!

  23. smarshall3789 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:43 PM

What a joke I think the wings gave up more in their trade damn Kenny where were you this was a steal!

  24. jetfan74 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:48 PM

He could have cut out the middle man and just traded him to MN for Nino. What a joke, the rebuild never ends!!!!

  25. dp2310 - Mar 5, 2014 at 4:52 PM

Snow will never be gone until Wang is gone. Wang wants a puppet to control. I almost can’t form words and sentences about what I want to say about this guy. I’d rather have John Spano.

  26. penvik - Mar 5, 2014 at 5:06 PM

Yeah, Garth Snow ABSOLUTELY had to owe montreal something. Thus is a blunder not only for the islanders but for the NHL as a whole. It’s almost like Bettman forced this to happen to make the canadiens somewhat viable again. This is horrible for the entire league. How did no other team, Hello Anaheim, not have more to offer? That must be one hell of a prospect (next Crosby or Gretzky???). Has to be. Never heard of him but I’m not sure what I just witnessed today. Very VERY frustrated. This trade deadline is a black eye on the entire league.

  27. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 5, 2014 at 5:14 PM

Wow if I’m an Isles fan I’m pissed. You gave up Moulson, who had great chemistry in New York, plus the picks and then get backed into a corner on deadline day and get weak, weak value. I know Snow is solid when it comes to picking pieces off the trash heap but his ability to put together a blockbuster needs some real work.

  28. drewsylvania - Mar 5, 2014 at 5:24 PM

    You bag of ****, Snow.

    Enjoy it, Habs fans.

  29. drewsylvania - Mar 5, 2014 at 5:25 PM

Garth Snow is a slimy little space penis.

  30. dlhouse18 - Mar 5, 2014 at 6:57 PM

You guys should also remember that Garth Snow traded Nino Niederreiter to the Wild for Cal Clutterbuck. That’s starting to look just as bad as the Vanek situation.

    • strictlythedanks - Mar 5, 2014 at 8:51 PM

      if not worse

  31. cantescapekarma - Mar 5, 2014 at 11:50 PM

Buffalo got two 2nd round draft picks (and a player) for Moulson. Just saying is all… (Yea Cody McCormick was included, but I consider him basically an even swap for Torrey Mitchell). I sure hope for the Isles sake that Collberg is one heck of a good prospect!
