Coyotes GM on Erat: ‘He’s tied with our goaltender for goal scoring’

If there is one concern the Phoenix Coyotes might have with Martin Erat, acquired in a trade with the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, it’s his lack of goal scoring this season.

Erat has just one goal in 53 games this season, although he does have 23 assists. His previous low was also one goal, scored during the 2002-03 season, when he played 27 games for the Nashville Predators. He also split time in the American Hockey League with Milwaukee that season.

Coyotes general manager Don Maloney made the point that Erat currently has as many goals on the season Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith, who scored a buzzer-beater into an empty net against Detroit back in October.

“He’s tied with our goaltender for goal scoring so it isn’t where we need it to be, but we think that can come back,” Maloney said Tuesday, as per Sarah McLellan of azcentral sports.

There was another terrific one-liner tonight, offered by Florida Panthers goalie Tim Thomas when he commented on his team’s acquisition – headed by general manager Dale Tallon – of Roberto Luongo from the Vancouver Canucks.

“Dale went kicking tires and found one that needed to be pumped,” said Thomas, of course referring to the infamous tire-pumping episode between Thomas and Luongo during the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.

GMGM: good news Erat, you’ve been traded, just like you asked……………to the Coyotes! lololol. Erat: FML !!!!!!!

He had to waive his no movement clause, so that means he’d rather be in phoenix than playing in Washington with Ovi lololol.

(It physically hurt me to type something as high-school-girlish as lolol)

And, surprisingly, Alex Burrows. I mean, the guy’s an ass, but he’s usually good for at least 25 a season. Still has none.

Two GM’s taking each other’s trash. Klesla cleared waivers not too long ago cause of contract and Erat, well Maloney’s quote says it all.

Erat’s lone goal was also an empty netter, and both Smith and Erat have played 53 games. Weird.

Phx fans, you should look forward to the summer when Erat demands his third trade in a span of 5 goals.

That Tim Thomas quote about the Luongo deal at the end of the article is great.

“Dale went kicking tires and found one that needed to be pumped,”

Thank goodness he’s finally gone, I never understood why the Caps(GMGM) made this trade. You give up a good blue chip draft that had potential, for a mid thirties(?) forward. Now to see if McPhee moves anyone else and can sure up the blue line. Good pick up on pancakes by the way.
