The Colorado Avalanche acquired goalie Reto Berra from the Calgary Flames for a second-round pick on Wednesday.
The Avalanche already have their net covered with Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere, but this gives the team some insurance in that area. Both goalies have had checkered injury histories, so Berra could provide another experienced option.
Colorado may also consider keeping him in the fold instead of Giguere, 36, if they end up liking the 27-year-old better. Both are slated to be unrestricted free agents this summer.
From the Flames perspective, this confirms that Berra isn’t the team’s future in net. He went 9-17-2 with a .897 save percentage and 2.95 GAA this season.Avs wanted some goalie insurance in case Jiggy’s back doesn’t hold up
