Trade: Caps acquire Penner on National Pancake Day

The Washington Capitals have acquired veteran power forward Dustin Penner from Anaheim, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports.

In exchange, the Ducks will receive a fourth-round draft pick.

Penner, 31, has 13 goals and 32 points in 49 games this year, missing some time with a concussion earlier in the season. He’s on a one-year, $2 million deal and will become an unrestricted free agent in July.

Penner has never played in the Eastern Conference before, spending all eight of his NHL seasons in Anaheim, Edmonton and Los Angeles.

As the headline suggests, Penner getting traded today is delicious irony. He infamously injured his back two years ago while digging into a stack of “delicious pancakes,” creating a Penner/Pancakes meme that had quite a bit of shelf life.

Ohhh the irony with the pancakes.

I laughed so hard that my back is hurting.

he’s literally going through customs as we speak dude

      • newjerseydevilsfanpuckcollection - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:37 PM

I’ve heard different as well. Been hearing that they have been going through the process of having him come over.

      • jennettalia - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:39 PM

@J I think he meant that you don’t need to look out for them this year.

      • govtminion - Mar 4, 2014 at 7:39 PM

He’s been ‘almost here’, ‘he’s finally coming to the Caps’, ‘any day now’ for a few years. I won’t buy it until I actually see him on the ice in a red jersey- he’s been stringing McPhee along since he was drafted.

…Even if he does get here, I’m not all that impressed with him- so let’s see if he’s any good when he DOES play.

Someone else (Vanek? Moulson? Cammalleri?) is probably coming to Anaheim now.

    • bucrightoff - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Traded Penner for only a 4th….only cost them a 4th for Robidas? Hmmm…

Pancakes are extremely overrated. There I said it.

Caps get Penner and a 4th round pick?! Steal!

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:13 PM

That’s what Halford says, as of 2:12pm, and he wouldn’t lie.

  6. lowenni - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:10 PM

As a Caps fan I don’t understand this trade at all. We don’t need a washed-up power forward who takes nights off, we need a veteran leader or a defenseman.

    • esracerx46 - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:15 PM

      Need more truculence!

    • stevefromsacto - Mar 4, 2014 at 8:02 PM

Gritty forward who is willing to go to the net. Has a Stanley Cup ring and currently plays for the top team in the league. And we got him for a fourth rounder. We do need a defenseman also, but this is a steal.

  7. jpelle82 - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:10 PM

    4th rd pick

  8. xbrightxredxbloodx - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Half price pancakes from any IHOP in the greater D.C. area when Penner scores and the Caps win?

  9. benhrome - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:38 PM

Didn’t the Caps trade Perreault to the Ducks for that 4th Round pick earlier this year? So…that means in essence, it’s Perreault for Penner?

  10. alliceishome - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:59 PM

Where will Penner fit the lineup? Could be be looking at top-line duty with Ovi and Backstrom?

  11. jeremyroenickdanceparty - Mar 4, 2014 at 3:01 PM

There’s an IHOP a couple blocks from Kettler. He’s gonna love it in DC.

    • jhaegs - Mar 4, 2014 at 3:03 PM

There’s a “no pancake clause” in his contract. Waffles are less dense, and not included.

  12. penvik - Mar 4, 2014 at 3:01 PM

Can’t wait to see Vancouver fans freak when kesler is moved for WAY less then they thought. Penner worth a 4th, Robidas worth a 4th. Kesler might be had for Depres and a 2nd, that might even be overpayment in relation to these deals. C’mon Shero, get in while the going is cheap!! Penguins should be able to pick up Vanek, hemsky and kesler for the original deal that gillis wanted for kesler :)

  13. easez1 - Mar 5, 2014 at 5:52 AM

The very reason the Ducks signed Penner was the big body presence nobody can handle, a trait sorely needed to insure Getzlaf and Perry don’t get shut down, which has happened every playoffs since 07 when they won it with Penner on that line. Forget his stats on the season, look at what he did in LA for the Kings cup run, and again the following year when they made the conference finals. The Ducks just threw out their chance to get out of the west, and the Caps just found the key to keeping the puck down low for Ovie, with arguably one of the best screen setters in the league.
