Sens shakeup: Conacher, Corvo put on waivers

Ottawa has stirred things up one day prior to the NHL’s trade deadline, putting forward Cory Conacher and veteran defenseman Joe Corvo on waivers.

The most surprising decision was Conacher, the 24-year-old who finished sixth in Calder voting last season as the league’s top rookie. The diminutive winger has played 59 games this year, scoring four goals and 20 points, but his ice time has dipped to 12:20 per game, an indication he’s struggled to find his niche in the Sens lineup.

Conacher is best known as the piece Ottawa acquired at last year’s deadline in exchange for Ben Bishop. To say the trade has been lopsided is an understatement — Bishop has turned in a Vezina-caliber year in Tampa Bay, ranking among the league leaders in shutouts (four), wins (29), GAA (2.05) and save percentage (.932).

Conacher’s in the last year of a deal that carries a modest $871,250 cap hit.

As for Corvo, the 36-year-old rearguard’s struggled for a regular spot in the Ottawa lineup, but has scored 10 points in just 25 appearances this season, showing a decent offensive pop. He’s on a $900,000 deal that expires at year’s end, so he could be a depth pickup for a club wanting veteran d-man experience come playoff time.

    Bring conch back to Tampa!!!!

    • rbbbaron - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:58 PM

yeah, to replace another “diminutive winger”

  2. hockey412 - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:37 PM

There is zero chance that Conacher clears. Pittsburgh needs help on wing, if no one else takes him first. I doubt he’ll get that far down.

    • newjerseydevilsfanpuckcollection - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:48 PM

Like you said someone WILL pick him up.

Plus a very small cap hit at $871,250

      • hockey412 - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:02 PM

You know, I’m sure I’m oversimplifying, but in those cases, why wouldn’t you at least try to use him as part of a deal? It’s not like Ottawa doesn’t have any holes to fill.

      • elvispocomo - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:09 PM

I’d be willing to bet they tried but didn’t get any takers. Not sure why they wouldn’t for at least a low end pick, but you never can tell with these things.

Comanches will definitely be picked up. He was real good in Tampa last year before he got traded. What if Tampa picks him back up? Yzerman definitely got the best of that deal getting Bishop.

      *Conacher….

  4. canadiansportsfan77 - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:45 PM

He makes sense as an Isle waiver claim to play with Tavares and Okposo next year

  5. newjerseydevilsfanpuckcollection - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:50 PM

I think the Senators are moving some pieces to clear some cap space.

871K for Conacher and 900K for Corvo. Moving these two small pieces show that something big may be coming their way.

They have room already in their space, but something pretty large seems to be coming their way.

I wonder if the Rangers would consider claiming him to help out until Zuccarello returns

    • schneider99 - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:55 PM

      By him I mean Conacher

    • bwayblueshirt - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:11 PM

Oh dear lord please grab him. He’s got a wicked wrister and he could unload all day with the set-up guys we’ve got. I doubt the teams ahead of us will pass on him, but if by some miracle they do, Sather would be an idiot not to take him.

  7. beyor35 - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:53 PM

B’s should pick up Corvo for depth… He knows the system and is cheap…

  8. westinpat - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:55 PM

Possibility of Tim Murray claiming him off waivers?

    • cantphaseme - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:01 PM

      Was thinking the same thing.

    • imgoingtowichita - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:09 PM

Wink, wink with Stewart going to Ottawa along with someone in Ott’s org that nephew Tim covets maybe.

    • tdsnbeers - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:35 PM

For some reason I don’t see it happening. I am in Buffalo, and mind you, Tim Murray should be very familiar with Conacher, I believe we used our waiver claims (high status) on guys like D’Agostini, etc.. Also, I don’t think he would screw around his uncle like that, though Cory does have Buffalo roots playing at Canisuis college.

  9. krebsy34 - Mar 4, 2014 at 12:58 PM

It should go in order of worst in the league to best right? Tim Murray probably had a part of getting him to OTT. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in a Sabres sweater.

  10. bluesdroogie - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:02 PM

No way Conacher clears waivers. There is just too big of an upside with little to no risk whatsoever. The cap hit is miniscule.

  11. bigolbig - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:22 PM

Sabres already have 50 roster players so I don’t think they can claim him.

  12. flash8910 - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:24 PM

Wow, Conacher, really. Young kid with lots of upside. I can’t believe that he couldn’t move him.

Neither will clear. Conacher has too much potential. Corvo is a great depth D for playoff bound teams, which can never have enough D.

This sounds like a family trade. Buffalo should have the 1st claim.

  13. deeboy - Mar 4, 2014 at 1:37 PM

For the playoff bound teams, there is no way he will make it that far in the waivers process. He will be a RFA after this year, so whoever claims him will retain his rights past this season. Some lower ranked team will take a chance on him as he has shown goal scoring ability during his time in Tampa and he’s still young.

  14. richc111 - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:35 PM

I wonder if Buffalo will end up picking them up. Wouldn’t that be odd. It would be like Thanks Uncle for the players

  15. phillyphanatic77 - Mar 4, 2014 at 2:57 PM

Putting Conacher on waivers makes zero sense to me. I saw him excel plenty in Tampa last season and with that cap hit? What is Ottawa thinking? I get he’s been a disappointment this year but still he’s 24 with a lot of potential. As everyone has already said there’s no way he clears.

  16. bengalguy - Mar 5, 2014 at 7:37 AM

Um………Conacher played last night in Edmonton………12 HRS AFTER YOU REPORTED THE SENS WAIVED HIM??????
Might wanna get your facts straight before printing it.
