The Montreal Canadiens have acquired veteran defenseman Mike Weaver from Florida, according to multiple reports.

In exchange, Florida received a fifth round pick at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Weaver, 35, has spent the last four years in Florida, serving in a stay-at-home defensive role while averaging close to 20 minutes per night. He leads the team in blocked shots (94) this season and been reasonably durable, appearing in all 82 games during the 2010-11 and ’11-12 campaigns.

Weaver’s also relatively affordable, currently in the last of a two-year deal with a $1.1 million cap hit.

The interesting angle, though, is that Montreal added a defenseman. The Habs currently have seven on NHL contracts — Andrei Markov, Josh Gorges, P.K. Subban, Alexei Emelin, Francis Bouillon, Douglas Murray and Jarred Tinordi — with prospect Nathan Beaulieu having been shuttled up and down between Montreal and AHL Hamilton throughout the year.

What’s more, Davis Drewiske is back in the mix (recently waived so he could go to Hamilton and rehab his shoulder) and the club recently flipped Swiss blueliner Raphael Diaz to Vancouver in exchange for fourth-line forward Dale Weise.

As such, the Weaver addition could be a precursor to another move… or, perhaps GM Marc Bergevin just wanted to ensure his club had blueline depth heading into the postseason.

Really! Another smurf like player. Maybe they need him to fill a spot in Hamilton. idk

Weaver is a good stay at home defenseman. Small, but good skater who’s very smart. Fantastic on the penalty kill.

I have no idea who this guy is. I mean, I have seen him listed in the Florida team scoring lists, and run across his name in the boxscores, but I have no idea who he is.

A 35 year old 5’10 journeyman defenceman. Really? Is it really so hard to give ice time to younger players? What is next? Bringing back Paul Mara or Jeff Halpern again?

a 35 yr old 5’10” journeyman with nothing to lose but the chip on his shoulder…i think if you’re a habs fan you will be pleasantly surprised with his efforts.

Judging by the Twitter reaction from Panthers fans, you may be right. I will watch him play before making any judgments.

After seeing the Habs pick up Bouillon, Drewiske and Murray, while Tinordi, Beaulieu and Pateryn watch from the bench, or from Hamilton, I have become skeptical about the way the Habs’ defence is being developed.

Well crap, I didn’t think Florida would trade him. PK specialist and calming influence on the back end, The habs just got better.

Hope the 2015 draft is deep, I guess :/ ???

I liked Weaver when he was with st Louis. Should be a good pickup for montreal.

I dont have a problem with montreal trading late round picks because what a lot of people forget is over the last 2 years montreal has drafted 10 players in the first 3 rounds. All of those players will need a place to play so any later round picks wont likely have a spot do develop on the farm team when it comes time anyways.
