Flyers bolster defense, add MacDonald in trade with Isles

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired blue-liner Andrew MacDonald from the Islanders for a third-round draft pick in 2014, a second-round pick in 2015, and 24-year-old AHL center Matt Mangene.

MacDonald is a pending unrestricted free agent. The 27-year-old has four goals and 20 assists in 63 games this season, while averaging 25:25 of ice time. Only four d-men in the entire NHL have logged more total minutes.

New York had reportedly been seeking a first-round pick for MacDonald, who had reportedly been seeking a contract worth $5 million a year from the Isles.

The trade leaves Philadelphia with an abundance of defensemen, so don’t be surprised if one of them gets shipped out by tomorrow.

Solid Move Man nice work Homer now ill reiterate what someone else said put the phone down now, DONT NEED KESSLER.

    • bcsteele - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:14 PM

I feel for you Flyers fans and I agree he should hold pat, but we all know he’s thinking about it. He’s almost got an addiction to making head-line deals.

      • soccerphanatic - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:34 PM

Hopefully, he just drives up the price for Kesler and doesn’t actually give up a king’s ransom for him.

  2. islesjb - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:08 PM

Pretty indifferent about the move- about what I expected. Logged a lot of minutes for the Isles at a solid value. Isles were never going to pay him what he wanted with all of our young guys coming up.

    • elrock7 - Mar 4, 2014 at 8:22 PM

overpaid for a somewhat useful, but small and not very physical dman.

  3. narfmoo12 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:08 PM

If they can’t re-sign him, they can flip him for a 3rd rounder in the offseason before free agency starts. Definitely a good move.

    • rbbbaron - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:38 PM

a 3rd rounder for negotiating rights in the offseason? lol, how about a conditional 7th?

      • jbink2585 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:55 PM

MEZ IS OF THE BOOK FLYERS WILL RESIGN HIM

  4. killerpgh - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Good pick up for a reasonable price that helps fill a team need. I wonder if any part of those picks are conditional draft pick depending on resigning/playoff advancement.

  5. penguins87and71 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:10 PM

I have to wonder what this means for a possible Kesler and Edler blockbuster deal?

  6. rlecchino - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Garth Snow a genius. He gets two picks and weakens the Philly defense.

    • narfmoo12 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:13 PM

Oh you Isles fans … Same people who swore their team was going to easily make the playoffs because they made the playoffs in a shortened season for the just the second time in a decade.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 4, 2014 at 5:44 PM

It’s amazing what ALMOST beating the Pens in a fluke year did to that fanbase, right? I’ve seen MacDonald play plenty in the years he’s been on the Island and I’ve always been impressed with his game. He’s quite possibly the biggest blueline bargain in the NHL right now. Of course that will change this summer but in no way, whatsoever, does this “weaken” the Flyers blueline. Adding a guy who can eat minutes, put up points, and most importantly move the puck only makes this team better. And not having to give up a 1st for what could be a rental is a solid move by Homer.

People can make all the jokes they want about Holmgren but beyond the Bryz-Bob fiasco he’s made some smart moves. Now if he just holds onto Brayden Schenn and manages to flip Mez for a 3rd I’ll be extremely impressed.

  7. sjsharks66 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:13 PM

It’s better then what the Flyers currently have going for defense.

    • elrock7 - Mar 4, 2014 at 8:29 PM

Holmgren is a dumbass, he craves the next trade like a heroin addict needs his next fix.

Flyers have been making horrible trades for a few years now, no matter who the GM. JVR trade was great…for TORONTO, Richards, Carter, Bryz all bad trades. What have those trades done except push the Flyers out of the top echelon?

Cant wait to see what team the Flyers help this year.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 4, 2014 at 9:38 PM

First off, the Bryz “trade” was simply to get a jump start on working on a UFA contract. It really can’t be considered a trade. And that’s really the major mistake Homer’s made. JVR was far too inconsistent here, despite getting every opportunity to succeed. It looks lopsided now but that’s with hindsight on our side. Finally, the Richards and Carter deals were wins for this club. Simmonds, Schenn, Voracek, and Couturier, plus other picks, have easily outproduced those two (even if you just consider two, like Simmonds and Voracek). The Kings got the Cup but that’s not all on the Flyers. We sent Carter to Columbus, not LA. Overall, you only list a few negatives while ignoring all successful moves, just like most uninformed critics.

      • sumkat - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:48 AM

Bryz wasn’t traded for, he was a FA, all they got was rights to negotiate a few days early. Gave up very little

Richards trade has worked out well, I always liked Richards, but if you tell me right now I can have Simmonds and Schenn, or Richards, I’m taking Simmonds and Schenn every day of the week.

Same with the Carter trade. He didn’t get moved at top value, and he still picked up Voracek, and a pick that wound up being Courts. That’s a solid trade

Bob for peanuts? JVR for Luke Schenn? some of the FA contracts he’s handed out…yeah, he has definitely had his flaws. (I for one, would of kept Briere, and let him walk, or re-sign cheaper, and got out of that awful Hartnell contract).

Overall, I’d say he’s been OK, not great. I still have to cut him SOME slack because, what this team REALLY needs, like so many teams, is a STUD d man. Not a good one, not a very good one, a stud. He finally got one, they go to the cup finals, and the following season that guy has his career cut short.

Those guys don’t grow on trees, but any time one has had a chance of being moved, he’s been in on it. I can’t give him a total pass, because he could of got a better group of defenders if he can’t land the stud. It’s not like he’s saving a bunch of cap space to try to sign a guy away if one becomes free (although I’m sure him and Snider will figure it out if it comes down to dollars, they always do)

  8. twpguy1964 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:16 PM

TERRIBLE for philly. How many bad defenseman can one team acquire, especially from the Isles? Another soon to be grossly overpaid former Isles defenseman here. Fire Holmgren please

    • ibieiniid - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:23 PM

what player have YOU been watching?

    • girouxsalem89 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Pretty good move considering he won’t be resigned more than likely and instead will be moved in the offseason before free-agency.

This was a solid rental to help on the back end and not play top pairing minutes, for a good price.

They will probably move Mez now and recoup one of those picks.

      You sir are dumb.

      • zta7991 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:53 PM

Lets not completely rule out not resigning him this off-season…if he has good chemistry and can be a steady contributor why not? He is asking for mezaros money which doesn’t exactly break the bank.

      • inbullieswetrust - Mar 4, 2014 at 5:33 PM

I don’t get some ppl here. Looks like most of you do not read but focus on one article. MacDonald is a rental. He wont be back. Neither will Mez and Timonen unless Timonen wants to resign. His contract will be cut in half. Weber has been the talk. Weber has a say on where he wants to go. Philly may finally get their man. As for forwards I don’t see Kesler being added or Edler. You guys can talk all you want. I have a inside look on some things. If Paul was to break bank with those two. He’s done. So the smart choice is adding $550G MacDonald as he is on his way out. Hopefully Hextall will take charge

    • World Wide Steve - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:42 AM

Macdonald is garbage.. Enjoy him Philly.. He has been absolutely pathetic this year.. Glad he’s gone..

  9. ibieiniid - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:31 PM

    http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/22/report-isles-macdonald-wants-5m-per-year/

just a refresher, Flyers fans. we’ll see what this trade actually is during this offseason ::thinking about offseason…. shudder::.

oh, and my MacDonald to Caps prediction (in the comments there) was wrong, but I still stand by the fact that the Caps should have moved for him.

  10. ruthlessandtoothless - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:34 PM

He’s an upgrade over at least 3 of their current D. Helps ease the load on timmonen and coburn since he is another guy that actually knows how to move the puck out of the zone.

  11. djshnooks - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:39 PM

And people thought he was gonna bring in a 1st rounder and top prospect? Lol.

I’m surprised they got as much as they did.

  12. phillyfan11 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:39 PM

This is a deal that I have no problem with. I just hope he doesn’t pull off the Kesler trade, they would give up way too much in that potential trade.

  13. flyerspsu - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:44 PM

not a good move, the guy is pretty awful, he is grossmann 2.0, blocks a ton of shots but is terrible at nearly everything else

this proves the Flyers front office doesnt look at saber metrics, he is a possession black hole and has about bad as saber metrics as you can possibly have, and now we are probably going to trade Mezsaros who is getting going and is arguably one of our best dman now thats hes healthy and got his swagger back

we are also probably going to resign and overpay him too, not a fan of this move

    • ibieiniid - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:52 PM

wtf is saber metrics? the measurement system the Sabres use that makes it look like they’re scoring more goals?

      (ignore the spelling difference please)

    • phillyphanatic77 - Mar 4, 2014 at 5:48 PM

Mez is hideous in his own zone. Sure his stats look pretty but he’s a player that makes you cringe when the opposition has the puck down low around the Flyers net. He’s got his offensive game back but he’s still scared to hit anyone. This is a clear upgrade for the Flyers.

    • sumkat - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:54 AM

He has 20 assists, so obviously he can at least move the puck, which is something the flyers seriously lacked. If he can do that AND block shots like Grossman, I see nothing to worry about. Sure he has terrible +/- number, but when you log 25 minutes a game on an awful team, that’s a byproduct

Not saying he’s going to make the difference in a cup run, I still think our d can’t hold up. But now it will take a team with 3 lines before they get knocked out, before it could of happened with 2

  14. flyerspsu - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:44 PM

    • flyboystransport - Mar 4, 2014 at 5:21 PM

Messzaros who was badly out of position against the caps is one of the flyers best d? I was against the flyers trying to get him but they gave nothing up.

      • flyerspsu - Mar 4, 2014 at 6:26 PM

meszaros has always been poor defensively, but hes gotten his swag back on offense and has been electric, saying he is one of the best dman on the Flyers isnt saying much, right now w/ his offense the way it is and him getting more confidence I have him over Streit (who sucks defensively too), Grossmann and Luke Schenn

the last season meszaros was healthy he won the best Flyers defenseman award over Timonen, Coburn, Carle etc., Meszaros is finally getting back to that form

  15. tjvalley - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:52 PM

I agree with flyerspdu. A-Mac is at best a 5or 6th de-man and can hurt you playing major minutes.

    • jbink2585 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:58 PM

HES BETTER THAN LUKE SCHENN AND HES A FREE AGENT AT YEARS END BASICALLY A TRYOUT FOR HIM SO DEF NOT A BAD MOVE. IF DONT LIKE WHAT YOU SEE FLIP HIM FOR A PICK FOR A TEAM TO NEGOTIATE RIGHTS HARD TO JUDGE ANY PLAYER, BECAUSE AS WHOLE ISLES HAVE BEEN BAD ALL YEAR AND HAVE NO GOALIE

      • jbink2585 - Mar 4, 2014 at 4:59 PM

Plus is cap hip for rest of year is very small not sure how you can like it, it improves your club RIGHT NOW and took no one of current roster.

      • elrock7 - Mar 4, 2014 at 8:34 PM

Maybe they could trade Luke Schenn to Leafs for JVR….Ouch!

  16. joey4id - Mar 4, 2014 at 5:28 PM

Reinforcement on d for the Flyers doesn’t come too late. Good move! Stand down on Kesler. They are the only team in the top 3 of each division to have a goal differential in the negative. Then again, we’ve been told by many the plus/minus stats is trash.

  17. jake6881 - Mar 4, 2014 at 5:58 PM

The Kesler trade is more likely now they moved Lou to Fla. Emery will be part of the deal plus some players with some money on there contracts. If salary goes one way then picks go with it. If youth and picks go with the salary, It makes sense. I just am tired of the win now mentality with the Flyers. We always are up against the cap and sign guys like streit out of desperation. We miss on this trade and we are buried for a few years and will have some bloated contracts. I know anything can happen in hockey but I want the cup, not just to make the playoffs.

  18. goodolejr - Mar 4, 2014 at 6:17 PM

I was ok with this trade until the Hawks got Rundblad for a 2nd rounder. I just…ugh Flyers.

FWIW, I also saw multiple reports (one from Tim Pannaccio so…you know) that they’re going to re-sign MacDonald. Unfortunately, $5M per for a 2nd/3rd pairing defenseman is a typical Flyers move.

  19. sioux1919 - Mar 4, 2014 at 6:18 PM

Great deal, hopefully now they can move Luke Schenn. Finally

  20. 19inarow - Mar 4, 2014 at 6:22 PM

All these Flyers fans thinking this is an upgrade. Very disheartening.

Andrew MacDonald brought down every players’ stats, offensemen and defensemen. Do your homework instead of drinking the proverbial Kool Aid. This is NOT a good move for your team. For 2nd and 3rd round picks??? Are you crazy? No contract for next year? And he wants $5+ per season? At best, on a good team, he’s a 5th defenseman. Your GM screwed up, again.

You paid too much for Streit, but he’s good at what he does and likely worth the first two years of his contract. But MacDonald? Wow.

It’s easier (and lazier) to give a thumbs down to a comment, than doing your homework.

    Thanks Paul!!!

    • crosbysuxx - Mar 4, 2014 at 7:34 PM

Just gave a thumbs down, don’t do homework anymore!

    • flyerspsu - Mar 4, 2014 at 7:46 PM

thank you, and knowing holmgren he’ll sign him to a ridiculous extension similar to Streits

    • sumkat - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:00 AM

I’m not saying he’s great (I think he’s decent, which is better than our bottom 3). I’m not saying it was a good trade (we’ll have to see how he plays in phillys system, on a not awful team, maybe not being a top pair guy will help him). I’m not saying that they won’t sign him to an extension for too much money (although if they do, I’d rather they do it with a 27 year old than a guy in his mid 30’s Streit)

But A, this is definitely an upgrade for Philly. Nobody is pretending they just added Weber or Suter, but their D core is better now than it was 24 hours ago. B, if McDonald was THAT bad, and brought down every players stats, he wouldn’t of got over 25 minutes of ice time a game. That just doesn’t happen. I’m not saying he’s going to make the guys he’s playing with better, but if he was bringing them down, they would of gave those minutes to somebody else

  21. flyersfan85 - Mar 4, 2014 at 6:38 PM

    Thank god for another dman.

I may be swearing him later in the season..but im pretty happy right now with it.

We are happy..stay away from Kesler..stay..away from Kesler..

  22. har21441 - Mar 4, 2014 at 7:19 PM

    LOL giroux

  23. antmel30 - Mar 4, 2014 at 8:40 PM

With this move flyers got an upgrade from Andre mezaros if they choose to move him which is pretty clear they are going to. Also I heard mez will go for a 2 nd rd pick. Which is what flyers just gave away. So when they trade mez they will have gotten McDonald for a third rd pick. Not a bad trade for stretch run.

  24. jimw81 - Mar 4, 2014 at 9:47 PM

horrible trade by a dumbass gm

  25. World Wide Steve - Mar 5, 2014 at 2:34 AM

Please Enjoy AMac and his fabulous Minus-19 +/-..So glad to see this guy go.. He’s been on the ice for too many 3rd pd blown leads..and he goes to the Flyers?. Even better..

    • sumkat - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:17 AM

They are the 4th worst team in the league, and he plays just short of half of every game. Of course he is going to have a bad +/-. Tavaras is -6. Okposo is -9. When you lose a lot, you generally have a bad +/-

I don’t think he’ll set the world on fire. But maybe not being that 25 minute a game guy, and settling into a 4/5 spot, with 15-16 minutes a game, he will play better not being gassed. We’ll have to see.

At the very least he is a guy that can eat some minutes so Tims doesn’t get too warn down before the playoffs, and held on to that first.

  26. sumkat - Mar 5, 2014 at 3:12 AM

Flyers till need a stud D-Man. That’s till what they are missing. Honestly, I think every other piece is there (Mason hasn’t proven to me he can do it, but I think he’s proven he wouldn’t cost you games….but a cup winning goalie has to steal a few).

I guess it’s possible, if Mez and McDonald are both allowed to walk, they could find a way to fit a stud d man under the cap….but I don’t know of any on the market. The Flyers have been reluctant to move guys like B Schenn and Courts (at least that’s what I’m hearing in Philly), and that is what basically is making a Kessler deal a non start. Trust me, they get a chance at a Weber/Suter type, the “pitch” goes something like this….”Pretend we don’t have Giroux, what else in our organization is it going to take”, they then rebuild from there.

Personally, I’d have no problem overypaying (both in salary, and assets) for that stud D. Philly is enough of a prime location for guys they could re stock. But to me, the stud D man is becoming more and more the #1 priority for a contender. The QB of the team if you will. Used to obviously be the goalie, but it seems more and more, that to be a steady contender, you need the stud d man, with a solid core, and a goalie good enough to get on a hot streak…and hope it comes at the right time

When Philly beat the Pens 2 years ago, the Pens were clearly the better team. But their goalies played awful (outplayed by the flyers goalies? come on), and their “stud” d man doesn’t play D . If Letang added that to his game (or Karlsson while on the point), they’d be on that level.

right now, I think Suter, Weber, Doughty Chara (I’m sure there are a few others I can’t think of right now). If you have one of those guys, and any semblance of a team around them, you should be in good shape
