Video: Seabrook scores … on his own net

Mar 2, 2014, 12:24 AM EDT

These things, no matter good a player one might be, happen in hockey. The own goal, and it’s often a spectacular and dreadful spectacle.

Brent Seabrook knows. The Chicago Blackhawks defenseman one-timed the puck into a wide open net in the third period of Saturday’s Stadium Series game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Only problem: he slammed the puck into his own net.

James Neal, who threw a blind pass out front, got credit for the goal. Despite the gaffe – Seabrook threw his head up in disgust the second he saw the puck hit the back of the net – the Blackhawks still won by a final score of 5-1.

Been there. It sucks. Pick up the tab for the next steak dinner and call it even.

It’s pretty bad when score one goal and you don’t even score it.

Now he can tell his grandchildren how he scored the team’s only goal at Soldier Field game.

Like they always say, goalscorers will find ways to get their team on the board no matter how creative they have to get. James Neal knows better than to just assume it won’t go in his favor by shooting the puck in the general area of the net.

In all seriousness, good on the Hawks to not let that goal shake them. That was one of the notable points in the game where the Pens had a chance to turn it around but instead just stood and waved as the opportunity passed them by. Hawks capitalized and built off their chances, Pens didn’t. Simple as that.
