Video: Braden Holtby dazzles with his stop on Wayne Simmonds

Mar 2, 2014, 2:25 PM EDT

Washington’s Braden Holtby has had a strong game throughout the afternoon against the Philadelphia Flyers, and forward Wayne Simmonds knows it all too well.

With the Capitals holding a 2-1 lead early in the second period, Simmonds skated in all alone on Holtby and got the Washington goalie sprawled out on the ice. All that did was give Holtby a chance to make a spectacular leg save as Simmonds attempted to tie the game.

Holtby’s finally starting to turn his season around. I think that Olympic break really helped him get his mind back in the right place. Good thing for the Caps, too, because when he’s on he’s a fantastic goalie.

    SOFT GOAL FOR WIN !

Holtby sucks. He’s the reason the Caps are a lottery pick team. He had a great playoff series against the Bruins a few years back, but he’s been very overrated every since (see GAA and S%). Despite solid play from Neuvirth and Grubauer, the Caps have force-fed him game after game game, but have absolutely nothing to show for it.

With average goalie, they’d be in top 4 in East.

I bet the Caps trade for Halak.

As a Flyers fan I totally disagree. Holtby has the physical ability to be an impressive #1. The Lecavalier game-winner was somewhat soft but beyond that he was pretty amazing most of the day. I didn’t have much hope of a comeback… and that was bc of Holtby. He’s young and goalies aren’t perfect (just look at Mason’s career path), but Imo he’s definitely better than Neuvirth and Grubauer.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. He’s had two real strong seasons and three solid playoff series, and despite that, people look at a few months of struggle just this season. You also chose the wrong game to make that comment for because he had an incredible game–did you watch the video above? The Caps would never trade for Halak, he’s been worse than Holtby all season. Do you know anything about goaltending? Holtby has the potential to be a top-10 goalie for a long time.

Did you not watch the game? Despite the score Holtby played phenomenal. I’m pretty sure Halak got traded to the Sabres for Miller. Go Flyers

11 goals against in past three games. Huge games the Caps needed to win before the trade deadline. It’s not just a recent thing, he’s been awful all year.

    His glove is terrible.
