Jaroslav Halak may not be long for Buffalo

Mar 2, 2014, 10:21 AM EDT

Jaroslav Halak AP

When the Buffalo Sabres acquired Jaroslav Halak as part of the trade that sent Ryan Miller to the Blues, it was suspected that Sabres GM Tim Murray might try to send him elsewhere before Wednesday’s trade deadline.

As it turns out, his phone lines are already buzzing to do just that.

Michael Russo of The Star-Tribune reports the Minnesota Wild have been contacted by the Sabres about Halak, but Wild GM Chuck Fletcher has some doubts about Halak. From Russo:

But some inside the Wild worry he was a product of the Blues’ stingy system and there’s a reason St. Louis felt Miller, not Halak, was the final piece of a Stanley Cup puzzle.

But if the price is right, Fletcher could pull the trigger.

The Wild are also kicking the tires elsewhere (New Jersey, Carolina) for goaltending help. Meanwhile, Halak was on the ice in Buffalo for practice this morning before the team heads out of town for a three-game road trip starting in Dallas.

At least he doesn’t have to change his pad colors going from the Blues to the Sabres.

To add fuel to the fire of speculation, Halak told reporters following practice he wasn’t starting in Dallas tomorrow.

Could Buffalo get a late first round pick for Halak? Maybe, maybe not, only desperate GM’s know for sure but he would at least fetch a second rounder. Buffalo will be busy at the draft table next year doing a complete makeover and in a couple years they could be doing as well as the Oilers, oh wait….

Halak is a rental on an expiring contract with a decent cap hit. Is he really worth even a 2nd?

Hey, don’t be cruel. We Sabres fans are suffering enough. I wanted Elliott over Halak and never wanted Stewart either. If Murray can move both of them and get a decent goalie in return, then he did well. Another second can’t hurt plus whatever Ottawa would give him for Stewart.
Judging from his play here, if someone wants a young guy from Buffalo, Grigorenko would be my choice, if someone is stupid enough to take him.
Has anyone even thought to mention that Enroth’s contract is up after next year? From what I hear, neither of the guys in Rochester are anywhere NEAR ready to play in the NHL.

      • paperlions - Mar 2, 2014 at 4:19 PM

Stewart and Halak had to go to make the money work….taking those guys is why they got a decent prospect and 2 picks.

      • leninthebuff - Mar 2, 2014 at 7:15 PM

I would keep Stewart and as long as Teddy stays give him the next year to work on Stewart and if it fails trade him at the dead line next year. Stewart is a big bodied tough winger who is capable of scoring 25-30 goals. Who is going to score for the Sabres next year?

      • billsfanaddict - Mar 3, 2014 at 2:51 PM

Hackett is ready to be tested as a 1b next year if they want him to give it a whirl. It’s gonna sound cliche but he can tend to look spectacular from time-to-time yet isnt too consistent. He’s almost exactly 24, so plenty of time & yet not a spring chicken. I dont know if he’ll ever consistently be considered a solid NHL #1 or not. Wouldnt say a mediocre prospect but wouldnt argue hard for far past moderate. Been killer over here in rochacha while spearheading the Amerks to wins in [about] 14 of the last 19 [many on the road] since a bit after coming home stateside from the Sweden-trip.

You can’t blame him. Who would want to be in buffalo? No one if they were smart.

    • ralphwilsonisrich - Mar 2, 2014 at 11:36 AM

Why because of philaddelphia has nothing crack row house?

    • govtminion - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:00 PM

I know you’re just trying to get a rise out of people, but Buffalo is actually a pretty nice city. I’ve enjoyed my visits there- not much positive to be said about their sports teams at the moment, but the city shouldn’t get painted with the same brush as their teams.

But, facts aren’t really helpful when you’re just here to troll the internet, right?

I can’t wait until this team is good and you eat your words

  4. crazemastercraze - Mar 2, 2014 at 12:09 PM

I see Philly pulling the trigger on this one. They need another mediocre goaltender dressed up as a world class keeper to keep the delusion rolling in the land of orange and black 1974ville

honestly Halak would do okay on a team like Philly. he does better when he sees a lot of shots, im sure he’d see plenty of rubber there.

  5. twinwildflyer - Mar 2, 2014 at 12:20 PM

Title of the article is stating the obvious…however I’d take halak as long as the price isn’t too high.

    • guitarhunterdude - Mar 2, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Yeah, I think a second for him would be pretty solid value. He’s a solid tender, his only real problem is injuries. I think he’d do fine behind Kuemper.

  6. mehetmet - Mar 2, 2014 at 12:43 PM

in related news, the sabres are the only team drafting in this years draft. I mean christ, how many picks are they going to pile up? Do they realize that you do also have to have players and not just prospects?

    • mjw9326mjw9326 - Mar 2, 2014 at 4:04 PM

I am wondering just how many of those picks Murray plans on dealing for bodies or to move up to get someone. If they do not get the first pick next year (I truly hope they do) then trade some of those picks for the right to draft Connor McNabb. This kid is apparently VERY special. If we can get a kid anywhere near as good as say Crosby, for example, he would be worth three picks easily.

I love to get all of you girls all uptight, and your panties in a bunch. The truth hurts don’t it?

    • bullwinkle88 - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:52 PM

It’s clearly obvious that you’re on the rag.

  8. flyerguy73 - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:14 PM

Dude, I have lived there, and it’s a dying city. The sports team suck each year, yet the fans are the morons that pay to see less than mediocre teams.

    • nj666 - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:32 PM

stop bashing the city of philadelphia…

      • ralphwilsonisrich - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:54 PM

Nothing but crime all over the news. Germantown etc…..

    • ralphwilsonisrich - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:53 PM

City might be dying but the waterfront is taking off. Been there?

  9. flyerguy73 - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:37 PM

    Great come back nj999.

    • pezz24 - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:46 PM

Hahaha that was literally 20x better than anything you’ve said on this thread

  10. flyerguy73 - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:51 PM

Another good one pezz dispenser. How old are you girls? There should be an age limit.

    • bullwinkle88 - Mar 2, 2014 at 1:54 PM

I’ve lived in Philly. I prefer to live in Buffalo for reasons you aren’t capable of understanding with your myopic vision.

    • handsofsweed - Mar 2, 2014 at 5:22 PM

Soooo, now you’re trolling for underage girls?

  11. flyerguy73 - Mar 2, 2014 at 2:40 PM

Yes, I have been there. Buffalo= Loserville USA. Lol.

  12. djshnooks - Mar 2, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Paul Gaustad brought in 1st rounder…don’t ever forget that when talking trades.

I don’t think Halak plays a game in Buffalo and Stewart might play one.

All the draft picks don’t have to be used either…maybe Winnipeg wants picks for Evander Kane, so Murray is stocking the cupboard. Not to mention they have auch better scouting department than Edmonton…and I think our GM has a better eye for scouting as well. Plus Buffalo already has the defensive prospects by the boatload…Edmonton’s still looking for them.

    • mjw9326mjw9326 - Mar 2, 2014 at 4:07 PM

Too bad it came down to a power struggle that Patty lost and had to quit. He was doing great things for the solid future of this franchise. He was and is a really first class guy and I wish him luck.

  13. 19inarow - Mar 2, 2014 at 6:52 PM

Meanwhile, somewhere on Long Island, Garth Snow is happy with his goaltending. And his coaching staff.

And Buffalo fans think they’ve suffered enough?! Ha!
