Kesler calls reported trade request ‘completely false’

Today after practice, Canucks forward Ryan Kesler called yesterday’s report that he asked to be traded “completely false.” (Here’s the audio, per TEAM 1040.)

“I never commented to anyone that I wanted out,” he said, per the club’s Twitter account. “My heart is with this group and making the playoffs.”

Of course, that won’t significantly lessen the trade speculation heading into Wednesday’s deadline, and possibly into the offseason if he’s not dealt next week. Even if Kesler doesn’t want out, Vancouver general manager Mike Gillis may still feel it’s in the team’s best long-term interests to try and move him.

PS — Kesler also said his injured hand is feeling better, and he hopes to play tomorrow versus visiting Minnesota.

As expected. He seems pretty happy in Vancouver despite some of the teams struggles and it looks like he really wants to help that team win. I don’t really see Vancouver trading him unless they get some really solid roster players in return. I like Kesler a lot, I would want him on my team for sure even with his injury history, and I’m sure Gillis feels the same.

Trade him to the Rangers, along with Hamhuis for Alain Vigneault.

RYAN-the Chicago Blackhawks want YOU. Center Kane and Saad. Here you will have a chance to win. Vancouver is DONE. vancouver we will give you a 1st, pirri, and bickell.

Why would anyone want Bickell(especially at like what, 4 mil a year or whatever he gets overpaid?)

    • btlpper68 - Feb 27, 2014 at 5:24 PM

Dream on I can think of 29 teams who have lineup plans for him

    • micasa81 - Feb 27, 2014 at 5:36 PM

      Vancouver says no thank-you.

The only way this trade works cap wise is if its almost a dollar for dollar swap of players currently on the roster. Also, Vancouver is up against the 50contract limit. They could only take on 2 players if the Hawks only get Kesler.

If a trade does occur it would be Bickell, Brookbank/Roszival/Leddy/or Oduya, plus Ryan Hartman (his contract doesn’t count as one of the 50 contracts as he’s still in junior, plus another first.

Vancouver fans, would you take Bickell, Leddy, Ryan Hartman, and a first for Ryan Kesler?

      • thebigwhitecat - Feb 27, 2014 at 8:21 PM

Kesler is 29 and injury-prone. Brandon Pirri straight up for Kesler and it gets done.

      • esracerx46 - Feb 27, 2014 at 8:45 PM

Sigh, that puts the hawks over the cap by about 4 million as Pirri is not on the hawks 23 man and they only have 800k in cap space. Plus Pirri is on an elc so he doesn’t make much even if he was on the active roster.

If the Canucks want to throw in a low level minor league player, then they could have Pirri.

Canucks have 49 players counting against the 50 standard player contract limit. If the Hawks acquire Kesler they would need to shed 4.2 million from the 23 man roster. Pirri’s low salary and not being on the 23 man roster make it more difficult for the Canucks to acquire him.

If they do make a trade, it will definitely be a complex one on a couple levels. More than just players in play.

There was a rumor at the beginning of the season as well. C’mon Keslar you are not fooling anyone just trying to make good with your teammates. It’s obvious he wants out, same with StLouis and Ryan Miller

  5. joey4id - Feb 27, 2014 at 5:39 PM

If he does want out you really can’t blame the guy for wanting to get off the crazy Torts train. If he doesn’t want out, then you have to wonder if he’s not the crazy one.

Probably just sick of being in Canada after getting beat the last two Olympics by the Canadian team.

  8. canucks30 - Feb 27, 2014 at 6:20 PM

Does it matter? The Canucks are a sinking ship with or without Kesler.

I got onto Wikapedia (yes I am aware it is a horrible source of info) after reading about the rumors on Wednesday night and under Ryan Kesler’s “Transactions” section at the bottom it read:
“Traded February 26, 2014 to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Gustav Nyquist, Brendan Smith, and 2014 1st draft choice.” I read this just a few minutes after Nyquist scored the over time game winning goal against the Candians. Thankfully, Wikepedia was lying and the post was removed the following morning! It was so oddly specific that it had me worried! I could deal with losing Brendan Smith and a 2014 st roind pick, but NOT Nyquist!
