Mike Babcock: ‘It’s about Canada, hockey supremacy’

It comes down to this. A winner-take-all gold medal final between Canada and Sweden at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

For the Canadian side, it could become the first repeat champion in Olympic competition since NHL players began participating in men’s hockey in 1998 (see the five challenges Canada faces against Sweden). For four years, Canada has basked with the bragging rights brought on by Sidney Crosby‘s heroic overtime Golden Goal against the U.S. in Vancouver.

A nice memory for Canadian hockey, but it’s in the past.

This Canadian team has been the subject of scrutiny and criticism because it hasn’t been lighting teams up on the score board, despite a plethora of chances in every game. Crosby has yet to score in this tournament. Yet as a team, they’ve given up only three goals in a total of five games, most recently shutting out the U.S. team in the semifinal to advance to Sunday’s gold medal game.

“They want to win. It’s real simple,” said Canada’s head coach Mike Babcock, as per the L.A. Times.

“Sometimes I think we get a little bit confused. It’s not about who scores the goals or who blocks the shots or who plays. It’s about winning. It’s about Canada. It’s about hockey supremacy. We like to brag that it’s our game? If you think it’s your game, you better show it’s your game.”

I actually think Canada will win this one pretty easily. 2-0…3-0…something like that. As a neutral, I’ll be cheering for the underdog. Go Sweden!

I hope Canada gets absolutely embarrassed. Maybe Crybaby breaks a leg…that would GOLD for Americans.

It’s a disgrace we share a continent with such a bunch of scumbags…who act like immature a-holes when they come to OUR country, trashing stadiums and arenas.

I hate that country with a passion…and all their stupid talking people, eh!?! #Scum

even as an american homer that lives right across the river from canada and loves to talk sheet at all possible times; you sound like a dick-hurt douche bag.

    • 19to77 - Feb 23, 2014 at 5:08 AM

Right, right. You give that speech and we’re the ones with problems. Well, if your team make it back to America in one piece, more power to them – unlike you, I don’t wish world-class players injury to suit petty spite.

as idiotic as this guy is, canadians are obnoxiously arrogant about hockey and while your backing it up now your time for defeat will come again. your on a good run, enjoy it.

    • badgerhockey77 - Feb 23, 2014 at 5:45 AM

Wow, that’s pretty harsh! Yah, it would be nice if Canada got embarrassed. That would shut their obnoxious fans up for the next four years. But, that’s probably not going to happen. Like it or not, Canada has perhaps the most impenetrable defense since EVER! Stats don’t lie. Three goals against in five games. If Canada stays out of the box against Sweden, they win easily!

DJSHMUCK is the real scum here

That’s fine, we’d be more than happy if you want to take all those scumbag Canadians off their American NHL teams and send ‘em up here. Enjoy the game, eh.

Who even let’s this D-bag post?

Someone’s really butt-hurt and got sent over the edge by that smashing at the hands of the Finns.

I love the U.S.A and some absolute loser like you can never change that.

      Go Canada, bring it home!

    • leafsilluminati - Feb 23, 2014 at 7:55 AM

Let the butthurt flow through you!

      Hmm! I think the following happened in the USA;

      http://www.cbc.ca/sports/baseball/mlb/louie-sanchez-marvin-norwood-sentenced-in-giants-fan-attack-1.2545026

and there are more examples of violence from your country.

Oh, get a grip. You’re just pissed that your team lost. That tired old stereotype of big brother/little brother is usually tossed around by clowns like you when you get your ass handed to you. Either that or you blather on about how nobody cares about hockey in the U.S. anyway and that we’re idiots for caring. Make up your mind. You’d be saying the same about the Swedish team if they’d beat you in the final, too. Canadians are allowed to celebrate a win without it being interpreted as insult to the U.S. No one here has even thought about the U.S. since the semi-final on Friday. Can Canadian fans be obnoxious dicks? Absolutely. But as someone from Vancouver who was present during the 2010 olympics, I saw my fair share of obnoxious, disrespectful Americant’s walking around our city, trash-talking every other country, getting in drunk fights in the streets, pissing in streets and hotel hallways, and generally being arrogant douchebags, all the while blathering on about ‘U.S.A.! U.S.A.!’. And that’s not limited to the olympics. Historically speaking, that’s been the case. You can find similar stories about Americans world-wide, which is why you’re generally not well liked.

It’d be cooler of Babcock won a Stanley Cup this year instead of Olympic gold.

Yanks- loved by all the world over!!!

  5. djshnooks - Feb 23, 2014 at 1:05 PM

Wasn’t talking about violence dumbass, I meant when they come and piss all over the bathrooms…start fights with fans…etc.

Maybe I shouldn’t include all Canadians, as it is mostly the Toronto scum, like the Mayor. Ya know, your crackhead icon?

  6. djshnooks - Feb 23, 2014 at 1:09 PM

And no, not butt-hurt at all…go back and look at my comments before the Olympics even started…I wanted Bylsma and Quick to be embarrassed, because they are mediocre hockey people who are surrounded by all-world hockey people, who make them look better than they are.

But as far as Americans hating Canada…it’s like the big brother hating on the little sister. It will never end.

Ps. You sent us Justin Beiber.

    Enough said.

Hey, you sobered up! Good man! Must be hard to be that p*ssed or stoned that early in the day. Yes, you’re American and yes, you’re an idiot. Hey, maybe that could be a rock n roll song.
