Five quotes from Canada’s 1-0 win over the U.S.

Feb 21, 2014, 4:09 PM EDT

Jamie Benn AP

“We capitalized on that one chance. I think both goalies were definitely the stars of the game.” — Rick Nash

Hands up if you predicted Jay Bouwmeester would start the key offensive play today. Just a perfect pass to Jamie Benn for the tip home. Jonathan Quick couldn’t be faulted on that one, and was otherwise brilliant in stopping 36 of the 37 Canadian shots. Meanwhile, Carey Price stopped all 31 shots he faced, earning a shutout in the biggest game he’s ever played.

VIDEO: Sidney Crosby on pressure entering Sunday

“I’m just trying to make my way to the dressing room here.” — Jamie Benn

In response to a question about what was going through his mind after scoring such a huge goal. Not surprisingly, there were one or two cameras and microphones in Benn’s face once he got off the ice and entered the media gauntlet. Only 24 years old, it’s fair to assume the Dallas Stars winger has never received so much attention. Remember when he wasn’t even selected to Team Canada’s summer orientation camp?

“It wasn’t that good a game. It was a sleeper, one nothing. Couldn’t really generate anything, they couldn’t generate anything.” — Ryan Kesler

Many will disagree, given the quality of the hockey we saw today. But, in fairness, Kesler was responding to the assertion that it was a “great” game. And let’s be honest, it wasn’t an all-timer. Besides, has anyone lost bigger games than Kesler since 2010? An Olympic gold-medal final. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Now another disappointment. Imagine the frustration.

VIDEO: Highlights from Canada’s thrilling win

“I think it was a good game. Two good teams out there that were skating well. Didn’t give up a whole lot of chances on both sides. I think that’s a sign of well-coached teams, good skaters, smart hockey players.” — Patrick Sharp

The perspective from the winning side. Even though they didn’t fill the net (again), this was the kind of game the Canadians wanted to play. Tough defensively, fast, and with minimal mistakes. Yes, the Americans had their chances to beat Price, but you could probably count the number of those on one hand.

“It seems like we had a tough time sustaining any pressure in their end. They outnumbered us in their zone, came up with it quick and, as we expected, they were quick on transition.” — Ryan Callahan

In a related story, Canada’s blue line is the best in the tournament. The only team that comes close to matching it is Sweden, and — hey, wouldn’t you know it — the Swedes are in the gold-medal game, too. Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty don’t have Stanley Cup rings and gold medals by accident. These guys are unbelievable puck movers who set the pace and rarely make mistakes. When a team’s got those two playing over 20 minutes, and it’s also got Shea Weber and Alex Pietrangelo playing over 20 minutes, well, Callahan’s quote says it all.

Kesler is such a douche it’s insane. epic sore loser. the guy does nothing but chirp and when he loses which he does often) he complains or down plays it.

    • michael91148 - Feb 21, 2014 at 4:24 PM

what do you expect ? he certainly isn’t considered one of the sharpest knives in the drawer.

    • stepanup - Feb 21, 2014 at 4:36 PM

I’ll judge him for his play on the ice, where he gives everything he has.

    • elrock7 - Feb 21, 2014 at 7:37 PM

absolutely agree, the biggest DB in the league!

      • cofran2004 - Feb 22, 2014 at 9:02 AM

i think the biggest DB in the league actually has DB as his initials. just sayin….

  2. 19to77 - Feb 21, 2014 at 4:19 PM

And yet I can’t help but think Kesler and all of America would be slinging the word “miracle” around again if they’d managed a 1-0 win instead of a loss here.

  3. joey4id - Feb 21, 2014 at 4:20 PM

No doubt Canada’s d play in the neutral and d zone was just too good for USA. D and forwards play their positions extremely well.

    • bigdong28 - Feb 21, 2014 at 5:52 PM

I wonder what game the 21 downvote people where watching LOL…Their D was incredible.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:14 PM

Joey probably gets those from people just on principle.

      • cofran2004 - Feb 22, 2014 at 9:25 AM

        A) People here hate Joey. I don’t… I may disagree with a lot of his points, but at least he usually backs them up with why he feels the way he does. Most of the time, it even makes sense.

        B) A lot of us US of Americans are pretty bitter about losing… myself included. I hate seeing my countrymen lose to canada at anything, and I hate seeing my favorite team lose to Crosby. This is a double dose of F U, cofran.

        C) C ties in with B. When you lose, sometimes you’re too bitter to admit why you really lost, and seeing that reason, and knowing it’s true sucks. So… while you know its true, you’ll lash out at the bearer of the bad news.

I watched the game, along with everyone else who was on lunch at the time at my office. What joey said is very obviously the truth. Canada scored their goal, and I knew it was over. Sucks, and it hurts…….. but we move on. If the US takes bronze, they match Canada’s medal, and its a wash in the medal count. Our country can still “win” the olympics. Thats what we should all be rooting for as US of Americans, and hockey fans.

  4. jcornella - Feb 21, 2014 at 4:31 PM

Just not the firepower Canada has. Kane is likely only player who would make Canadian roster other than goalies. It was a good game though. Canada’s defense is amazing!!!

    • stepanup - Feb 21, 2014 at 4:40 PM

Interesting comment. At first I thought “no way” and names like Suter, McDonagh, Kessel, Pavelski and Parise came to mind. But, as you get down to it, Pavelski’s a no with Canada’s center depth, Kessel would probably be a scoring line winger, and maybe Suter would get in over Hamhuis, Subban/arguably Bouwmeester. Parise isn’t up to James Neal’s standards and he missed. So maybe three American skaters would make Canada’s lineup?

      • tdrusher225 - Feb 21, 2014 at 10:32 PM

Are you high? Suter would likely be playing top pair minutes

    • imleftcoast - Feb 21, 2014 at 5:47 PM

I thought it was coaching. Canada adjusted after 10 minutes, and they had to the way everyone was going past Keith. Kane was great on the half wall looking for the backdoor pass, and Kessel looked great in the first period. Somehow the US needed to keep involving those two, but that seemed to get lost during the third PP.

  5. davester37 - Feb 21, 2014 at 4:34 PM

If anyone had to beat USA, I’m glad it was Jamie Benn. Go Stars!!!

    • dueman - Feb 21, 2014 at 6:50 PM

Jamie Benn didn’t beat the US, team Canada did….

  6. yukon13 - Feb 21, 2014 at 5:53 PM

19to77, I don’t think you would have had to worry about the term “miracle” been thrown around. Because your country has and never will be a world super power! But, keep saying it over and over again in different posts you douche

  7. yukon13 - Feb 21, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Oh.. And congrats Canada on your win. Your team played fantastic.

  8. bigdong28 - Feb 21, 2014 at 5:55 PM

Canada’s defense was incredible. Shows they made the right decision not to bring Subban. Guy is a stain on the Maple Leaf IMO. I think the entire Montreal organization is a stain actually. I’m not hating on canada here BTW…I just think Montreal is a horrible organization with scumbags throughout. Their play is disgraceful night in & night out.

    • dueman - Feb 21, 2014 at 7:00 PM

I find it funny that the people that make the most absurd comments always have names that just scream “I’m insecure”

By the way bigdong (wow), Subban is on team Canada…

      • bigdong28 - Feb 23, 2014 at 3:44 PM

        BUT wasn’t he scratched? LOL

I doubt there is a correlation between absurd comments & insecurity LOL. Passing judgement on people from behind a username…that might be a different story. BTW ever consider the name is for comedic purposes? Nah it can’t be…it must be that somehow I hope a girl will see the name & think it’s true..yup that must be it. you’re an idiot. Probably a Montreal fan.

  9. gbatap - Feb 21, 2014 at 5:58 PM

“Hands up if you predicted Jay Bouwmeester would start the key offensive play today. Just a perfect pass to Jamie Benn for the tip home.”

Bouwmeester started the key offensive play? Benn’s not getting enough credit here and I’m not sure why I keep reading everywhere about this great play Bouwmeester made. Benn’s the guy who gave Getzlaf an outlet, Benn’s the guy who made the no look pass to the point, Benn’s the guy who charged the net giving Bouwmeester a huge target. It was a great pass but that goal had more to do with Benn then anyone else.

  10. stateofthesport - Feb 21, 2014 at 6:34 PM

Yukon13 your a douche dude, we will never be a super power, lol you American’s can have it, sore loser, we are a peace keeping nation, and alway’s back your country up loser, we have had ton’s of our soldier’s die, fighting for your president’s so called best interest,, so get a life the reason we don’t want to be a superpower, cause then the rest of the world wouldn’t respect us like they do,they may fear your country, but generally they don’t like your other than Isreal,,your a tool that’s in the box that never get’s used dude,, cause you serve no purpose..

    • biffnasty - Feb 21, 2014 at 10:13 PM

Yes, you are correct in saying that canada will never be a super power. If you are happy being a country that people laugh at and have no respect for then by all means, tout your canadian pride! You have contributed a lot to the world. Most notably; the canadian tuxedo, mullets, Tom green, the loonie, flannels, mountme`s, and most importantly the beibs! ,
Keep up the great work canada. You, and your “exports” are the envy of the world!!

  11. laxman1944 - Feb 21, 2014 at 6:55 PM

This was an absolute disgrace and team USA should be ashamed of themselves for not even showing up.

  12. rico33rd - Feb 21, 2014 at 7:55 PM

Why would anyone want to bring politics into this? We are a small Country that has pride in our favourite past time. Would rather lose to US than Russians any day. Good luck to both.

  13. yukon13 - Feb 21, 2014 at 8:10 PM

Stateofthesport, nope I don’t like being in a super power country either and I wish we would mind our own business every once in a while. However, since I have served in our blessed Marine core in two wars. I was just pointing out that your friend has no clue why it was a miracle game and that he was stupid for constantly saying it in other post. So go f yourself

    • biffnasty - Feb 21, 2014 at 11:09 PM

I’ve never heard of this game you speak of..what exactly is “hockey door knob”? Is it like regular hockey? Instead of a puck, a door knob is used? Call me a crazy American, but that game doesn’t seem like much fun

What’s with the two of you? You’re whole conversation rallied around politics, war, kickboxing, and doorknobs. Kiss and make up.
