Toews on Canada-U.S. rivalry: ‘There’s a lot of animosity’

The semifinal matchup between Canada and the United States is one that will grab the attention of the hockey world, but all eyes might be on Chicago Blackhawks teammates who will square off against each other.

Team Canada center Jonathan Toews says Canada-U.S. is now the preeminent rivalry and as Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune shares, he says it’s not exactly a peaceful battle between the two.

“It has become even a bigger rivalry than Canada-Russia. There’s a lot of animosity, a lot of feelings like there’s something to prove between both teams,” said Toews. “It’s for the chance to go and play for a gold medal. It doesn’t get any better than that, playing for your country and going against the United States. There are millions of kids that grow up dreaming of this.”

Toews’ comments come after there was a very minor dust-up of opinions from Team USA’s Patrick Kane who gushed about the play of Phil Kessel.

As Tim Wharnsby at CBC Sports shares, Toews had a bit of fun with that statement himself.

Toews added with a smile, “He’s all right, [but] that Kessel guy is even better.”

All the talk goes away at Noon ET on NBCSN when the two sides square off for a spot in the gold medal game.

Gonna be a great game tomorrow, no doubt.

  2. elrock7 - Feb 20, 2014 at 9:18 PM

As a Canadian, obviously want Canada to win. As a Leaf fan I want to see Kessel and JVR both have great games.

    How about 6-4 Canada.

I’m Canadian, but for every American on this site, I’d like to apologize for this unrealistic prediction made by my fellow Canadian.

      • Lupy Nazty Philthy - Feb 20, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Why are you apologizing? It’s not even a prediction. It’s more of a request for a high scoring game, so the Maple Leaf players on Team USA do well, but Canada still wins. Nothing wrong with cheering for your favorite team and players.

And do you even ‘get’ sports? Cheer up, this game is going to be great game regardless who wins.

      • realemman - Feb 20, 2014 at 9:57 PM

I’m a Leaf fan too, I like high scoring games as well, but what I’m saying is that it probably won’t happen tomorrow, that’s all.

well I’m a Canadian too and I support Sidney Crosby ‘as per instructed’ like everyone else here in these parts … yet my heart is with Quick, Brown and the American side ? … very ‘highly illogical’ to say the least ! :)

        GO USA GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

      • jernster21 - Feb 21, 2014 at 12:07 AM

I can’t believe I just gave blomfeld the thumbs up.

      • blomfeld - Feb 21, 2014 at 1:01 AM

        Comrade Jernster … it’s okay friend, as that’s a ‘good’ thing ! :)

Martha Stewart says America by a touchdown !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blom Dude, So you don’t personally identify with “Sid the Gifted” as somehow expected? Feel free. Do march to the beat of a different drum.

You identify with Elvis (USA musician for anyone wondering about this exchange). With Rock, I identify with English progressive rock/huge musicianship/originiality bands – Gentle Giant, Crimson King, Procol Harum, Yes, Wishbone Ash, Yardbirds, Jeff Beck, Cream (well i’ve morphed into the wonderful English engrace of blues and R&B). On the USA front, Jimmi Hendrix, Its a Beautiful Day, Quicksilver messenger service)

Outside of Rock, I listen to jazz, first and formost, blues, R&B and world beat.

Point is, you have admiddedly mixed loyalties based on appreciation.

As someone who does the same, I hereby present you a “Get out of overly nationalistic guilt pass”.

        Scott

        Comrade Solutions …

Thank you friend for your understanding and the “Get out of overly nationalistic guilt” card which I’m sure might come in handy at some point eh ? No doubt your taste in my music is of a somewhat more ‘refined’ bouquet than mine, as my personal favorites are a little more mainstream … Elvis, Beatles, Stones, Abba, etc. Nonetheless, this is a ‘free’ world as you say and so we’re all free to support who we ‘want’ to support ! :)

The Hardy Boys say USA by a ‘converted’ touchdown !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me too! If the Red Leafs don’t win, I’m rooting for the Blue Leafs.

Loving all the comments from the players. Classy but competitive. Players on both sides seem driven and eager to win. They know what’s on the line. Going to be a great game.

Good Luck USA, but CO CANADA GO!

    • dueman - Feb 21, 2014 at 7:52 AM

How the heck do you have thumbs down on your comment? You compliment both teams players, wish the Americans good luck, and add a simple cheer for your team of Nationality. You couldn’t have written a classier comment, and yet as I’m writing this, you have seven thumbs down. There are some really spun individuals out there I tell you. Anyways, good luck to all you American fans, and as a Canadian…..Go Canada Go!

  4. deezenucks - Feb 21, 2014 at 1:59 AM

Gonna be a classic. Just let them play, I don’t want any excuses from either side after.

  5. badgerhockey77 - Feb 21, 2014 at 3:06 AM

I have my doubts about USA. Can’t see them winning it. Kessel in all his glory will probably be anonymous. Canada will lay a few hits on him and he’ll disappear completely. Goals will have to come from somewhere else. We’ll see.

    • dueman - Feb 21, 2014 at 7:54 AM

Just can’t shake that hate eh…

  6. Hockeyfan - Feb 21, 2014 at 5:43 AM

So torn on this game. Mostly just anticipating a good matchup and wondering who will stepup and stand out.

  7. comeonnowguys - Feb 21, 2014 at 9:02 AM

At this point, all I want from this game is for Toews, Sharp and Keith to not get kneed by Brown. Anything else is gravy.
