Ovechkin’s father in stable condition following heart procedure

Feb 20, 2014, 1:28 PM EDT

Alex Ovechkin‘s father, Mikhail, suffered what was believed to be a heart attack and underwent surgery during the Sochi Olympics, according to Capitals GM George McPhee.

Russia was eliminated from Olympic competition yesterday following a 3-1 defeat to Finland. McPhee said he was unsure when Ovechkin would return to Washington, telling him to stay in Russia for as long as needed.

The Caps next play on Thursday, Feb. 27 with a road date in Florida.

Yikes. Glad he was okay. Personally I have issues with Ovi not finding out until after Russia was eliminated. I’m curious as to how that decision was mandated. I mean how it was made.

Yeah that does seem peculiar. They knew it would’ve shook Ovechkin up and jeopardize the team. What if he died? I wonder if they’d do the same thing.

Classless, really? If i was in ovechkin’s shoes I’d have it no other way. no way he could/would check out of the Olympics, especially in his home country. He had a job to do, regardless of what happens on the home front, no reason to put that on his back at the same time.

No way in hell dude. Hockey is just a game….. if someone very close to you is having a serious medical issue and might die, you drop everything and go.

@gthom: If that’s your opinion, fine. But that is Ovi’s decision to make. Not anyone elses. Keeping Ovi in the dark for that is despicable.

Yeah! Good point you guys.. Some things are more important then winning. Too bad not everyone can see that..

    Glad his father is well.

  3. hardkor07mn - Feb 20, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Are you kidding me? This day and age it is amazing that they were able to keep this from him. Unbelievable that Russia cares more about winning than someone’s well being. Totally classless!

@gtthom- it’s a fricken hockey game! Who cares about a damn game? That’s his father, his flesh and blood. How could you possibly think that is ok? GET A CLUE!

    • gtthom86 - Feb 20, 2014 at 2:39 PM

hockey game? its the most important sporting event in the last 4 years for his entire country, with him being the teams best player, just has 150 million people watching his every move. his dad got hurt, but hes not the friggen surgeon. you think he pulls out if he knew about before the game? not a chance. i for one would be happy not to be burdened with something to heavy as that, when he already has an entire nation on his back.

you know who i guarantee agrees with me? ovie’s family, cuz if they wanted him to know they would have just dialed his cell. you guys are clueless

      • stakex - Feb 20, 2014 at 3:11 PM

Actually yes, I do think he pulls out if he knew before the game and it was still serious as that point. That’s why no one told him…. because Russia cared more about their precious gold medal.

Now the only way your point is valid is if he father was never in danger of dying, and we always going to pull through. Then I can see not telling him. If he was close to death though? Its sickening.

  7. muckleflugga - Feb 20, 2014 at 3:40 PM

did it occur to the agony aunts among you that mikhail ovechkin himself may have mandated silence on his condition …?

go out … get some fresh air

People are dumb, it’s obvious the Ovechkin family kept this from Alexander not Russia lmao.

    • stepanup - Feb 21, 2014 at 10:45 AM

Just a tip, if you’re making a point, don’t finish it wtih lmao. Pretty much tells the reader to disregard everything before it because you’re a clown.

Thoughts are with Ovi and his family that it’s not too serious and that his father makes a full recovery.

  10. therooneyskilledwebster - Feb 20, 2014 at 3:57 PM

This has the dreaded KGB written all over it. I fear we’ve seen the last of Ovi. Au revoir, or should I say Ovi revoir ?

I agree friend, as something definitely ‘stinks’ about this development, even though it’s unclear at the moment …
