SOCHI, RUSSIA - FEBRUARY 18: Alexander Ovechkin #8 of Russia looks on against Norway during the Men's Ice Hockey Qualification Playoff game on day eleven of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics at Bolshoy Ice Dome on February 18, 2014 in Sochi, Russia. Getty Images

The qualification round has been completed and each winner will play against one of the four teams that got a bye to the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Here are the matches and what channel you should tune in to:

Sweden versus Slovenia (3 a.m. ET, NBCSN)

Sweden was the only team to win all three of its preliminary round matches in regulation time. Even with key forwards Henrik Sedin, Johan Franzen, and Henrik Zetterberg sidelined, the Swedish team still has a superb offense and boasts one of the best goaltenders in the world in Henrik Lundqvist. For Slovenia, getting this far is a huge accomplishment after qualifying for the Olympics for the first time. Anze Kopitar is the team’s lone NHL player. (Watch it LIVE online.)

Finland versus Russia (7:30 a.m. ET, NBCSN)

Russia’s offense and power play were supposed to be the team’s main strengths going into this tournament, but that largely hasn’t been the case. After beating Slovenia in its opening match, Russia suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to the United States and just barely got by Slovakia in another shootout. The Russians earned a 4-0 victory over the Norwegian team to advance to the quarterfinals, but that match didn’t serve to put the concerns about their offense to rest. Finland will be a big test for them after the Finnish cleanly defeated Austria and Norway before frustrating Canada in a 2-1 overtime loss. (Watch it LIVE online.)

Canada versus Latvia (12 p.m. ET, MSNBC)

Like Russia, Canada has had trouble capitalizing on its overflow of skilled forwards. The Canadians found it particularly difficult to score against a Finnish squad that managed to claim the middle of the ice for the better part of their match. They had anticipated another tough defensive opponent in Switzerland, but instead will face the more offensively-minded Latvian squad. Latvia earned a 3-1 win against Switzerland to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in the nation’s history. (Watch it LIVE online.)

U.S. versus Czech Republic (12 p.m. ET, USA)

The Czech Republic’s coaching staff has made some questionable roster and lineup decisions along the way, which likely contributed to the team’s underwhelming showing in the round robin phase. The Czechs goaltending is suspect too, which will make the United States a particularly daunting opponent. The Americans looked great in the preliminary round. They cleanly beat Slovenia and Slovakia and fought hard for a shootout victory against Russia. (Watch it LIVE online.)

    My predictions:

    Finland (3) – Russia (2)

    Canada (6) – Latvia (1)

    US (3) – Czech (2)

    Sweden (2) – Slovenia (1)

Going to be a great day tomorrow to watch hockey!!!!

Also, I predict Putin will cry when Russia loses…..then demands all players from Finland are arrested and deported…LOL

    • steelpenbucs87 - Feb 18, 2014 at 3:18 PM

I think the older Czechs have a bit more trouble keeping up with the US team speed – 4-1/5-2 US. Otherwise these are the same picks I have right down to the score. Great minds!

      • newjerseydevilsfanpuckcollection - Feb 18, 2014 at 4:19 PM

I think the US defense is lacking and too young….where the Czechs have a much deeper defense. That is the only reason why I think it will be much closer.

Look how the US did with Russia and their defense which I think is not as strong as the Czechs. (in my opinion)

I think speed on the US forwards is great and will increase the speed of the game…but vet presence on the CZ team will slow things down as they need.

      • c9castine - Feb 19, 2014 at 12:05 AM

wait I’m sorry. can you please explain how you came to the conclusion the Czech’s have a much deeper defense?

I’m looking through the roster, and considering the games played in this tournament so far, and its my opinion your out of your mind.

      I’ll try:
      Russia 2-1 in SO
Canada 4-1 with an en and Latvia has a ppg
US 4-2 en goal, 2-6 on pp
      Sweden 3-0 with 2ppg’s

  2. jimw81 - Feb 18, 2014 at 3:19 PM

top 4 seeds advanced. tomorrow is gonna be epic. good time to call in sick……

    • imleftcoast - Feb 18, 2014 at 3:59 PM

I wouldn’t bet on Russia advancing. The US is looking good. So bummed that it’s US/Canada next, and the Swedes get the easy route to the final.

    • c9castine - Feb 19, 2014 at 12:07 AM

I’m slightly embarrassed to admit i took a few vacation days for this. I’m off tues-monday.

(i do have more vaca days, not like i wasted them to stay home and watch hockey. just some of them.)

If any of these games going forward are decided via shootout I’m going to puke. There is no excuse for settling any playoff game like that.

    • tridecagon - Feb 18, 2014 at 4:21 PM

      Yeah, but… OSHIIIEEEEE

  4. Hockeyfan - Feb 18, 2014 at 5:25 PM

Wow. So wish I could call out sick. I would set the alarm for 2:45 AM and hang out on the couch all day.
Canada v Latvia is a good game for the forwards to get their scoring going. USAv Czech Republic may be tight.
Are all games decided by shoutout if tied? Even the medal round?

  5. chanceoffleury - Feb 18, 2014 at 5:40 PM

I’m going with Russia over Finland, and then the top 3 seeds win out. I’m not convinced Russia will actually beat them, but having all 4 top seeds win and no upsets is no fun. Even if Russia is just a 5 seed to Finland’s 4. I just don’t see Latvia, Slovenia, or the CR topping their counterparts, either. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Varlamov and Rask both go lights out tomorrow, so I give Russia a slight edge on offense. And perhaps this isn’t the popular opinion, but I REALLLLLLY want to see Russia play a NA team for the gold medal. Finns and Swedes don’t have enough ego or controversy in their blood to make the gold medal game “fun”. But with Canada, USA, and Russia you can bank on 2 worldclass meltdowns no matter who wins the gold. Alaska may not be safe grounds come 8am AST on Saturday. Lives may be lost.

    • capsrockva - Feb 18, 2014 at 8:14 PM

Has it been determined that Varly is the starting goalie. Russia has been going with Sergei

      • chanceoffleury - Feb 19, 2014 at 12:59 AM

No. But Bobrovsky started on Tuesday. I don’t think any of the goalies have gone back to back yet with 2 games in 2 days. They’ve split the 4 games Russia’s played so far, and Varlamov won both games he started. They’ve both played well and have been on a fairly equal level so I feel there’s no reason to believe Varlamov won’t start since Bob started today. I could be wrong though. We’ll find out soon enough!

  6. pastabelly - Feb 18, 2014 at 5:40 PM

If it gets to a shootout, Finland is in trouble. Tuukka hates shootouts and struggles in them. Much of it is in his head. Hard to figure. I hope he comes up big tomorrow.

  7. capsrockva - Feb 18, 2014 at 8:13 PM

Why the hell NBC isn’t putting the USA/Czech game on NBC is beyond me. That is stupid. Not everyone gets USA network or NBC Sportsnetwork

    • jcmeyer10 - Feb 18, 2014 at 9:16 PM

      Scene: Inside NBC’s boardroom.

Exec: This will show all those people trying to cut cable.

      • sheapuck - Feb 18, 2014 at 10:19 PM

Exec: Yes! Much better to teach those cable cutters a lesson they might never realize than to get higher ratings and boost ad dollars.

      • jcmeyer10 - Feb 19, 2014 at 9:57 AM

Not saying they are right, just putting out a scenario in which they had a legitimate reason to keep it on cable.

Or less cynical would be to say, this is a bone for all the people that subscribe to cable.

  8. pone27 - Feb 18, 2014 at 10:19 PM

US vs. Czech and Finland vs. Russia could be easy “upsets”

I really hope us US fans are not taking the Czechs for granted. Same should Russia with the Fins.

    USA!!!

Hockey, a game for guys not coordinated enough to play football, baseball or basketball. But it’s good to turn on and take naps to, as only water polo is more boring than hockey.
