USA’s Jonathan Quick will face Russia

Feb 14, 2014, 8:31 AM EDT

SOCHI, RUSSIA - FEBRUARY 13: Jonathan Quick #32 of United States in action against Slovakia during the Men's Ice Hockey Preliminary Round Group A game on day six of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics at Shayba Arena on February 13, 2014 in Sochi, Russia. Getty Images

It looks like the United States isn’t planning on splitting its goaltending duties.

The team went with Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick against Slovakia and after he led them to a 7-1 victory, America will stay with him versus Russia on Saturday, according to the Canadian Press’ Stephen Whyno.

Russia has a scary offense, but Quick is certainly worthy of this opportunity. Over the past few years he’s excelled with the Kings and has elevated his game in high pressure situations like the playoffs. He has won the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy.

At the same time, it is interesting that the United States has been using him as its number one goaltender when it was Ryan Miller that took the 2010 Olympic underdogs all the way to the gold medal game with his superb play. Miller had a 1.35 GAA and .946 save percentage in that tournament and at the age of 33, he remains one of the best netminders in the sport.

After its contest against Russia, the United States will conclude its preliminary round schedule with a match against Slovenia on Sunday.

I’ll bet Ovechkin’s happy! I do hope we get blown out so Miller gets his chance in the medal round!
With those two goalies so good and so close in stats they should be sharing the net.

    • ron05342 - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:13 AM

Why would any true USA fan want to get blown out?

      Really?

    • itswhereyourmindsat - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:13 AM

You are a douche bag. Do us all a favor andkill yourself

    • avscup - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:54 AM

I hope you get blown out! Miller will start regardless you moron!

    • blomfeld - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:14 AM

      “I’ll bet Ovechkin’s happy” …

Yes, considering the fact that Ovechkin is an accomplished goaltender himself, there perhaps is a chance that he’s feeling ‘happy’ right now ? But if that’s the case then trust me pal, that won’t last for long ! Nor sir, because the USA lead by the world’s ‘greatest’ goalie of all is going to make certain of that ! :)

      GO QUICK !!!

GO USA AND THE CONSTITUTION !!!

      • nflfan4now - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:22 AM

You do know that Miller has made 77 saves on 79 shots that he’s faced by the Washington Capitals this season, right? Of course you do. Miller has shut out Ovechkin on 12 straight shot attempts this season.
        That’s why Ovechkin is happy.

      • wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:26 AM

        1.41, haters.

      • jimeejohnson - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:27 AM

        GO blomfeld, USA, and Elvis.

    • nflfan4now - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:19 AM

I shouldn’t have said I want them blown out, I do want them to win but the medal round is the important win.

      • jimeejohnson - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:28 AM

You’re not the first person to say something and then regret it. You might be the first person to admit it.

    • c9castine - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:26 AM

thats so stupid..i don’t understand this mentality.

why would you want to get blown out so another goalie gets to play?? why wouldn’t you want to just win with the guy who’s playing??

thats the problem with the NHL being in the olympics from a fan stand point. everybody just wants their favorite players to play.

i want team USA to win, i don’t care whos there. i hate phil kessel, but man do i love it when i see him streaking down the right side of the ice with the puck right now….

      • drunk4thliners - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:42 AM

Great point c9castine, and I couldn’t agree more. I only wish I could give you more than 1 thumbs up.

As a Pens fan but also a USA fan, I’d much rather see Martin & Orpik with gold around their neck than Crosby, or Malkin. Each of them can have excellent tourneys, and I hope they do, but when it comes down to who I want to win most, it’s gotta be USA, USA, USA!!!

    • wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:48 AM

Hmm…NFLfan4now wouldn’t be a disgruntled Sabres fan with a serious case of ECB…naw, of course not.

Maybe you should go back to watching the Bills. Maybe they can get Tebow or something.

    • c9castine - Feb 15, 2014 at 11:40 PM

now whats your plan? blowout didn’t happen….

  2. pmonte3122 - Feb 14, 2014 at 9:38 AM

Terrible decision. miller faces more shots than quick regularly and this is what quick will face. Not sure if he can hone up to a Russian strike force. We shall see.

    • c9castine - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:27 AM

yes just a terrible awful decision.

did you see how terrible Quick played in that first game? pathetic. he let in a goal. i can’t believe he did that.

    • wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:28 AM

Only effing morons can watch a 1-goal performance, a .96 SV%, and gripe about the goaltending.

      • jimeejohnson - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:28 AM

        And their parents.

      • thomasvanek - Feb 14, 2014 at 1:37 PM

And how many real chances did they have? Three?

  3. billsin20xx - Feb 14, 2014 at 9:39 AM

Well the trade value of Miller just went up for any teams thinking they might be playing the Pen’s in the playoffs this year. Cap’s maybe?????

  4. tlndma - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:22 AM

I thought Quick looked out of position often vs. Slovakia. He plays very aggressively and I’m not sure his game is made for the bigger ice sheet and Olympic style. We shall see.
Maybe the U.S. coaches feel they know what they have in Miller and they are going to see how Quick holds up, before making a change. If the Russians score more than a couple Saturday, I think you’ll see Miller take over.

    • wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:29 AM

I think you’re full of excrement. Quick plays an aggressive game and maintained 1.41 while DESTROYING the competition on the way to being the Stanley Cup MVP. Stop being an idiot.

    • c9castine - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:35 AM

if your changing your goalie because he lets in 3 goals you would never have put him in to begin with.

if your talking 4 or 5 goals, everybody gets yanked for that.

so, thanks for your analysis Pierre.

  5. pats2001 - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:51 AM

not sure why this would even be a question, of course you start Quick. he’s one of the top 2-3 goalies in the world. Baby Miller can get his start vs slovenia. hopefully he doesnt blame his teammates if it doesnt go well. but i dont see a reason why they shouldnt steamroll on sunday.

fired up for the US/Soviet game tomorrow. think its pretty clear that russian players nowadays have zero heart, so if the US could jump out to a lead, the russian team will go in the tank

    • wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:30 AM

He’s proven he’s the best goaltender in the world.

    • buddysguys - Feb 14, 2014 at 12:27 PM

      Who’s Baby Miller?

  6. flyerspsu - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:10 AM

Its amusing how so many people feel so strongly that one of either Miller or Quick is the clear choice. There is no clear choice. They 2 of the best goalies in the game.

Miller has been better this year and was unbelievable in the 2010 Olympics

… but in that time in between

Quick was the better goalie and won a Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup proving he shows up in big games

    • wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Some people are full of their ECB.

    • nflfan4now - Feb 14, 2014 at 1:03 PM

“miller has been better this year” – why he should be paying.

Quick hasn’t been the better player over the last few years, he has played on a MUCH better team. Miller is playing on an AHL caliber team right now.

BUT, Quick is very good, imho Miller is as good or better and should be given equal time.

  7. r8rbhawk - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:15 AM

Really, you can’t go wrong with either one…

  8. nflfan4now - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:24 AM

They are both excellent, thats why he should be giving them both starts!

  9. beergold - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:33 AM

Canadian opinion here…..I think that there three teams that could win the gold medal and I think that it will come down to the team with the better goaltending that does and as much as it pains me to admit this the American goaltenders are the BEST in the business right now. America wins it back from Canada this year……now I have to go pay my penance for saying this and shovel my driveway.

    • wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:38 AM

The Canadian squad probably needs to keep the shots against down and from the outside, rather than giving up too many rushes. I think they can do that I’m sure it’ll be fun to watch.

  10. wtfkwp - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:34 AM

Pretty sure Quick won’t be playing all the games. Miller will very likely face Slovenia, and even Bylsma probably doesn’t know after that..

  11. thomasvanek - Feb 14, 2014 at 12:05 PM

I’m done with Bylsma. This idiot is going to cost us the gold. Oh well, GO TEAM USA 2018!!!

    • hockeyflow33 - Feb 14, 2014 at 3:19 PM

      Huh?

      • thomasvanek - Feb 14, 2014 at 5:51 PM

        Did I stutter?

  12. jeffr85392 - Feb 14, 2014 at 1:46 PM

JQuick or Ryan Miller? Can’t really go wrong either way. And, for good measure, Jimmy Howard ain’t bad either.

    • richc111 - Feb 14, 2014 at 8:35 PM

Yea really, either way someone has to sit. Bottom line at the end of it, where will they finish. I guess we will find out

  13. richc111 - Feb 14, 2014 at 8:33 PM

Kind of a miller fan here but what I think this is a chance to get Quick in there now and he he plays good ride him because he will be around in 4 years while Miller won’t. But if he struggles in goes Miller and there you go. Kind of a win win. unless they lose. Then its not a win win.
