Henrik Zetterberg is done for the Olympics

Feb 14, 2014, 1:04 AM EST

Carl Juborg of Expressen in Sweden has reported that Henrik Zetterberg is done for the Olympics due to his injuries. Multiple outlets back that up, with strong suggestions that the 33-year-old might need back surgery. (There’s talk of a herniated disc.)

NHL.com’s Corey Masisak passes along more:

The CBC’s Elliotte Friedman backs it up further:

Sweden opened the tournament with a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic on Wednesday. Zetterberg scored a goal in the victory.

Masisak notes that Sweden cannot add anyone else to its roster, so they’ll roll with 24 players:

Det was marginal on making the playoffs this year. Now pretty much a given.

Anyone know how many LTIR spots a team has? Back surgery would put Z there and one wonders whether Franzen might be going that direction as well. Unfortunately most of Z’s cap space will be eaten up by Weiss returning, but with Datsyuk giving Wings fans some extra heartburn and possibly opening up his own cap space if he hurts himself further, Holland might find himself with significant cap room at the deadline…(let’s see him pay a king’s ransom for Vanek, Moulson, or a couple other guys who can’t get it done)
