Team USA has the lineup set for their opening match-up against Slovakia (7:30 a.m. ET on NBCSN) and Derek Stepan, Justin Faulk, and Jimmy Howard won’t be on it.

Those three players will be scratched for the first game of the tournament. Blake Wheeler beat out Stepan as the extra forward and Brooks Orpik edged out Faulk on the blue line. As you heard earlier today, Jonathan Quick will start in goal and Ryan Miller will back him up.

As for the line combinations coach Dan Bylsma will use, here they are according to USA Hockey.

thats a sick top D pairing.

i know a lot of people outside Pittsburgh either don’t know about Paul Martin or hate him by default because of his jersey, but he’s a sweet two way defender. Him and Suter are going to be crucial to success.

lot of depth in that offense. i like the pavelksi line being 3rd, and i like the toughness he put with Kane. more space you can create for Kane the better.

Switch brown and kane for Kessel and jvr. Those two together is their best offensive weapon by a mile.

Uh. Callahan on the Backes line? Instead of his actual NHL linemate, who’s better than Callahan anyway?

  4. withseidelinn - Feb 13, 2014 at 5:54 AM

Their third line is their best line…

This team is way overrated. They are better than Russia. They’ll win a silver. They are the second best team behind Canada. They’re lineup is way overrated. They have the best goal scorers in the NHL

Oshie better than Callahan, yeah ok. You don’t know much about hockey do you?

    • bcsteele - Feb 13, 2014 at 9:39 AM

If I’m off base, feel free to let me know (though I may not care) but I feel like I need to defend Oshie here. Here’s your comparison:

      Oshie: 14 – 32 – 46 in 57 games with a Cap hit of $4.175 through 2016

Callahan: 11 – 13 – 24 in 42 games with a Cap hit of 4.275 through the end of the year

So what I see is: Oshie points up more points per game, stays healthy, and still plays physical and blocks shots. I would say he’s not half the leader Callahan is, but I believe you’re still being unfair to Oshie.

On that note, the Rangers or ANY team that signs Callahan for a 6 million cap hit over as many years as he is wanting is just plain stupid.

I know its just slovakia, but they are really taking it to them…

How can you say the US is overrated- then in the next breath say they are the second best team in this tournament

  9. jkay1818 - Feb 13, 2014 at 9:23 AM

it seems like they are only running 4dmen with mcdonagh and shattenkirk logging most of the mins. those two look unreal together, they fly…
