Preds, U.S. Olympic GM Poile hit by puck, taken to hospital

Feb 6, 2014, 1:18 PM EST

Troubling scene in Minnesota today during the Wild-Predators pregame skate, as Nashville and Team USA Olympic GM David Poile was hit in the face with a puck, and sent to local hospital:

According to Russo, Poile wasn’t even on the bench at the time of the incident — he was in the tunnel leading to the bench area, and was struck when an errant Shea Weber pass ricocheted into Poile’s face.

We’ll monitor the situation and provide updates when available. Poile, 63, is set to travel to Sochi with the American team when the NHL Olympic break begins this weekend.

UPDATE: The Predators have issued the following statement…

Nashville Predators General Manager David Poile was taken to a St. Paul, Minn., hospital today after being struck by an errant puck during the team’s morning skate at Xcel Energy Center. He will remain in the hospital overnight for observation and evaluation, and further information will be released as it becomes available.

UPDATE 2: According to Chad Graff of the Pioneer Press, Poile may have suffered a fairly significant injury…

Yowza! I took a puck off the Adam’s Apple earlier this week and it ruined my day. I don’t even want to think about what a Webber slap shot to the face feels like.

It was a deflected pass, not a 100 mph slapper. Painful nonetheless. I remember an opposing coach in peewees or something taking a deflected pass to the forehead, looked brutal. major goose egg immediately.
I also took a puck to the face playing pond hockey as a kid, blood everywhere… maybe that’s when I decided to be a goalie.

Even a deflected pass from Shea can cause damage. Broken orbital bone.

When you woke up, was the pain gone?

Wear it with pride! Not many people can say they took a shot like that to the face.

Just hear that the Pred’s popular announcer, Pete Weber suffered a heart attack this morning. Rough day for the Preds.

Maybe after a puck to the face Poile will realize snubbing Yandle was a mistake.

Meanwhile, local Nashville authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Bobby Ryan who was spotted fleeing the scene by a parking lot attendant…just kidding!
