PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

One of the teams rumored to be chasing Sabres goalie Ryan Miller is the Washington Capitals. One writer gives their reasons why the Caps have other more pressing needs than making an upgrade in goal. (Washington Post)

Canucks fans can breathe a bit easier knowing that when it comes to possibly shaking up the team, coach John Tortorella and GM Mike Gillis are on the same page when it comes to players. (Vancouver Sun)

Johnny Oduya‘s lower-body injury that kept him out of the Blackhawks’ game against Anaheim last night shouldn’t keep him out of Sochi. (Tracey Myers)

Erik Karlsson is feeling good about Sweden’s chances headed into the Olympics. He also likes that they don’t have as much pressure as Russia or Canada. (NHL.com)

Zdeno Chara will miss Boston’s next two games to be Slovakia’s flag bearer at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and that means it’s time for the Bruins’ young defensemen to show what they’ve got. (CSNNE.com)

Jarome Iginla is wishing the Olympic break wasn’t happening right when he was heating up. (CSNNE.com)

Ryan Miller would be a definite upgrade in the caps net, however that doesn’t fix the other major issues they have. Miller can’t play defense or provide secondary scoring, although he may have more points than Erat, at worst they are tied in number of goals scored. The caps are not a team that is going to make a playoff run even if they do get in, and I am a Caps fan saying this. I would trade away the dead weight on this team, Brouwer, Laich, Erat, Green, Neuvy and Orlov (only if they still want out of dc otherwise keep both of them). Get draft picks or young promising prospects and rebuild this team because they are not a trade or 2 away from becoming a contender. This needs needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom the only players that should feel safe are OV, Backstrom, Ward (has been very good this season) Alzner and Carlson. And of course the GM needs to be removed first then start the rebuild.

as a hockey fan living in northern viginia and having watched the caps for the past 20+ years i dont think it would matter who they plug and play with….until the culture is changed from the top down this team will go nowhere.

Ryan Miller is helpful for NO team. He is an average goalie. That’s it! Way overrated. If team USA is going to do anything in the Olympics, it is going to be with Quick, not Miller.

6th in save percentage before last night, 8th now (.923). thats the most measurable stat for a goalie on a poor team and his is above the average. quick’s is .909 right now…just so you know. howard is sitting at .913.

Don’t be mad because the Flyers haven’t had a good goalie for decades.

I’d take Ryan Miller over Mason and Emery 8 out of 7 days of the week.

There are two major problems in D.C. and between the pipes is not either. Its Defense and Defense. Simple as that, the only two qualified NHL d-men active on the roaster for the caps is the Carlson and Alzner duo. With Green(I Still don’t know why we signed him for three years) sidelined, there is no consistency between pairings. If they trade for Miller the only thing I can say is I hope its part of McPhee’s grand plan to get tossed from his office and chased out of D.C. for slowly managing this team into the ground.

Let’s just say hypothetically the caps land miller…they better resign him bc if he walks and goes to free agency after what I am sure is a steep asking price…
