Poll: Who should replace Stamkos on Team Canada?

Feb 5, 2014, 4:49 PM EDT

With Wednesday’s news that Steve Stamkos (leg) had been ruled out of playing for Canada at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, attention quickly turned to who would replace the Bolts sniper on the team.

Given the lengthy list of snubs for the Canadian squad, there’s no shortage of worthy candidates. So, who should go? Vote away…

As the last option states, feel free to add other candidates in the comments section.

  1. steelpenbucs87 - Feb 5, 2014 at 4:51 PM

My money would be on St. Louis given the guys making the decision, but I would take Giroux. I think when you consider what you’re losing (Wing/Center Hybrid, who can play on the half board on the PP) Giroux makes the most sense.

Darkhorse would be Neal if they just want to go Sniper for Sniper.

    • kaptaanamerica - Feb 6, 2014 at 12:01 AM

Giroux. Canucks fan who wants Canada to win gold, so it has to be Giroux.Marty can replace the next guy who gets injured or can’t go. Giroux on his game is the best in the world including Crosby.

      • theageofquarrel - Feb 6, 2014 at 5:52 AM

        Is this you Peter Laviolette?

      • steelpenbucs87 - Feb 6, 2014 at 9:29 AM

Assuming its Giroux’s best versus other players best, then I’m afraid he’s still not even in the top 7. Maybe top 10.

  2. muttbolts91 - Feb 5, 2014 at 4:55 PM

    Marty Marty Marty

  3. puckmepuckyou - Feb 5, 2014 at 4:58 PM

I agree with Steel . G all the way.

  4. bucrightoff - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:03 PM

St. Louis, Neal and Giroux should be the 3 choices. Hall is a massive liability defensively so he has no shot.

    • Mike Halford - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:11 PM

Are you the one that keeps trying to get me to use “who” instead of “that”? I like your style.

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Feb 5, 2014 at 6:59 PM

No, MH., that would be me. Do I have to teach you how to use the Reply button too? Sheesh. Kids today…

    • jimw81 - Feb 5, 2014 at 7:49 PM

when the hell did penguins become the great mtl teams of 70’s? kuntiz selection and naming stankos screwed giroux and St.Louis and has put team canada in this situation. kuntiz is going be lost on international ice.

  5. miketoasty - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:04 PM

Before even looking at the candidates (And being a Pens fan) I knew I was voting for St. Louis right away. Easily, currently the best player left off the roster.

  6. nothanksimdriving123 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:05 PM

Note to Halford: Look up what snub means. Extremely unlikely anyone was snubbed, they just weren’t selected as there is a limit on how many can be picked.

    • jimw81 - Feb 6, 2014 at 2:39 AM

sorry, summer olympics are in 2 yrs.

  8. broadstreetbeatdown - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:08 PM

    Giroux, from a hockey standpoint.

    • anthj99 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:10 PM

Who would you recommend from a baseball standpoint?

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:13 PM

        Ty Cobb

  9. gbatap - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:09 PM

No way they’re taking Neal or Thornton to the big ice. Giroux or St. Louis will get the nod.

    • sjshark714 - Feb 5, 2014 at 8:48 PM

Because who would want to give the best playmaker in the game 15 more feet to work with…

      • dtownbeatdown - Feb 6, 2014 at 12:54 AM

I hope you are not talking about Thornton as the best play maker… Thornton is good, but not great like Giroux as a “playmaker.”

  10. bencia823 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:13 PM

Neal makes the most sense. he would be the best fit to fill the role that Stammer was going to (hard shooting sniper/PP weapon) and brings a lot of grit to the team.

  11. penguins87and71 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:16 PM

As much as I would like to see Neal on team Canada, I would have to with ST. Louis as getting on team Canada. If he gets passed over by Yzerman again it could be some interesting times in Tampa Bay.

  12. pfhockey - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:24 PM

Marty is on pace for nearly a takeaway pergame, few players have more. Great skater and Leader, amazing vision. Olympic bound.

  13. uscthom78 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:32 PM

Now if they don’t pick Marty this time, then that relationship btw him and Y is dead.

  14. killerpgh - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:34 PM

I don’t really care if another Penguins makes it. I actually hope Team Canada tells Neal that he needs to straighten up and if he wouldn’t of kneed Marchmand in the head he would of got the play for team Canada but since the IIHF calls it a lot stricter he would be the right pick.

But depending on where Stamkos was going to play Neal might be the best fitting replacement. Both are right handed shots who can fire the puck with success. Was Stamkos projected to be a center of winger in the Olympics? That would factor into the replacement decision as well. Considering teams will only have 2-3 practices before games start having a player play out of he natural position isn’t a smart move. And if Stamkos was going to play wing with Crosby (and maybe Kunitz) adding a player both have played with before would be a bad thing either.

My guess would be either St Louis, Giroux or Neal with Seguin having an outside chance if they planned on limiting Stamkos minutes and using him on high scoring opportunities.

    • bencia823 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:45 PM

Neal is left handed, and Hockey Canada’s primary concern needs to be winning, not reforming Canadian players. The NHL already addressed that incident.

      • jimw81 - Feb 6, 2014 at 2:40 AM

i hope they dont play whiffle ball in russia.

  15. phillyphan77 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:39 PM

St Louis or Giroux. As a Flyers fan, I would prefer St Louis so Giroux stays healthy.

  16. cameltoews - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:39 PM

I’m not saying it should be him, but Eric Staal needs to be in the conversation as well. He has been there and done that, he can score, and is defensively reliable. He can be used on both the PP and PK.

  17. icelovinbrotha215 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:48 PM

Marty St. Louis. Not even close.

  18. skr213 - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:49 PM

I hope it’s not Thornton. As a Sharks fan, I want him rested and hungry to prove himself after being left off the team. Any motivation to make Zen Joe hungrier in the playoffs will be good in my book.

  19. uscthom78 - Feb 5, 2014 at 6:27 PM

the other the event it becomes a Sudden Death situation we need someone to beat up the bad guys.

  20. joey4id - Feb 5, 2014 at 6:58 PM

    St. Louis

    joey4id – Jan 18, 2014 at 3:45 PM
Team Canada paging Martin St. Louis. Come in, Martin. Your presence is requested in Sochi to replace Stamkos. You will be playing on the right side of Crosby with Kunitz,.

    • angrytwitterguy - Feb 6, 2014 at 1:48 AM

You’re in desperate need for attention and validation. You and just a few thousand others have been saying St.Louis is Stamkos can’t make it.

      • joey4id - Feb 6, 2014 at 8:00 AM

Yes. I hope it doesn’t anger you that I crave attention. BTW, a few thousand others are predicting Giroux or Neal. To those that have been saying St. Louis I say kudos.for thinking like “Carnac the Magnificient”.

      • angrytwitterguy - Feb 6, 2014 at 9:41 AM

The MAJORITY have been saying St.Louis, but out of all those 1000’s of people, you’re the only one who rushes back to copy and paste his own posts to show everyone that he was part of the majority.

Oh wait, you’re the same guy that was pretending he had “inside sources” awhile back weren’t you?

You should get a girlfriend or boyfriend, so they can provide the validation you so desperately seek.

      • joey4id - Feb 6, 2014 at 9:54 AM

Hahahaha! I love that my copy and pasting irritates you. What does it say about you? Why do you even bother with my copy and pasting? Boyfriend or girlfriend? Ewww! No! I live in the basement of my parents home. Really sad! 😦

The irony of the whole thing can be found in your handle. “angrytwitterguy”.

        Answer: Martin St. Louis
        Question: Who will replace Stamkos?

        Carnac the Magnificient

Now move on angry tweety guy

      • angrytwitterguy - Feb 6, 2014 at 11:41 AM

So did you ever explain to everyone here why you were pretending to have insider sources on the NHL? I mean after being busted and exposed as a liar and fraud, did you even make the attempt to explain what was going on in that bean of yours?

Or is the truth of it just so embarrassing that you now just pretend like it never happened?

      • joey4id - Feb 6, 2014 at 11:45 AM

        Did what happen?

  21. phillyphanatic77 - Feb 5, 2014 at 7:17 PM

I think Giroux deserves it, especially if you look at how far he’s come from the first few weeks, but I’d rather it go to St. Louis. Let G and most of the Flyers rest. I wish Timonen was skipping cuz there’s one guy who could use a midseason vacation.

    • jimw81 - Feb 5, 2014 at 7:46 PM

Timonen is skipping the Olympics. if he’s practicing with Hal Gill, then he’s not ready.

  23. nyrnashty - Feb 5, 2014 at 7:33 PM

I don’t think St. Louis or Giroux should. They’re not replacement players they should’ve been there from the go. They should tell Canada they have other plans now, I know I would, at the least make Canada pay them.

  24. jimw81 - Feb 5, 2014 at 7:44 PM

St. Louis is going because if he snubs him again, there’s going to be some real bad blood there. More than now, which is bad.

  25. muckleflugga - Feb 5, 2014 at 8:02 PM

the decision –by committee and not by yzerman alone– might surprise everyone by bringing thornton back … he’s a natural for big ice and big corners and should have been there from the get go

a wild-card and my favourite would be ryan nugent-hopkins … great intelligence and vision suited to an open ice game

i believe hall and eberle in tandem with nugent hopkins would have lit it up big on the olympics stage … speed and skill to burn if performing away from the mauling thuggery of the nhl … they’d have been the talk of the hockey world

the popularity contest built around sidney’s needs will cause canada much embarrassment in weeks to come

    book it

  26. kastout11 - Feb 5, 2014 at 8:30 PM

Neal is a dirty player and therefore will not be selected. The best 2 players are St. Louis and Giroux. You cannot go wrong with either player, but to break the tie, Giroux is also an excellent penalty killer.

  27. noskebopperking - Feb 5, 2014 at 8:46 PM

    claude girioux

  28. hines86for6 - Feb 5, 2014 at 8:52 PM

  29. viperrko95 - Feb 5, 2014 at 9:51 PM

As a totally unbiased Flyers fan, my top 2 choices would be Giroux, and St.Louis. But purely from a best option standpoint, it’d be Giroux. Giroux would be the closest thing to making up what you’ll be missing with Stamkos. They’re both Center/Winger hybrids. Contrary to public opinion, they can both snipe the puck (Ex: G vs LAK on Saturday). Both are also speedsters. I know that Marty’s fast, but he’s also small. G is relatively small too, but bigger than Marty. Both have really heated up since being “snubbed”, but Giroux has played a bigger part in turning the Flyers around than St.Louis has. Giroux is the 3rd hottest players in the NHL right now behind only Crosby and Simmonds. 40 points in his last 36 games. Pretty incredible if you ask me. I personally think that Giroux should’ve been there from the start. He may be the best candidate, but you can’t really go wrong with whomever you choose…

    • theageofquarrel - Feb 6, 2014 at 10:59 AM

      Yeah,your bias is showing

  30. nyjetblue - Feb 5, 2014 at 10:05 PM

I hope they pick St. Louis…and I hope he turns them down…Bahamas baby!!

  31. phillyfan11 - Feb 6, 2014 at 1:33 AM

Real good chance that St. Louis gets the spot, but I would go with Giroux.
