Happy 80th birthday, Don Cherry

Feb 5, 2014, 11:19 AM EDT

One of hockey’s most prominent figures turned 80 today — happy birthday, Don Cherry.

Grapes is celebrating octogenarian status in Russia, as he’ll be part of the CBC team covering the Winter Olympic hockey tournament in Sochi.

As for PHT’s celebration, we thought it’d be prudent to highlight one of the best Cherry-related videos out there — the one where he jams on his piano desk.

Wow his 80? He certainly doesn’t look like his 80 years old.

Was thinking the same thing. Some people are blessed with good genes.

I was going to say the same thing. Was surprised to see he was 80. Well, happy birthday Don! Although most of us disagree with you 90% of the time, you at least make the disagreement enjoyable. Unlike mike’s arguments on NBC.

Happy Birthday Don Cherry, however controversial you comments may have been, it has certainly been entertaining. I have enjoyed them all these years.

There are many valid opinions on Don Cherry, but “yawn” is not one of them.

the friend of man, the friend of truth
the friend of age, and guide of youth

few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d
few heads with knowledge so informed

if there’s another world, he’ll live in bliss
if there is none, he made the best of this

    wee robbie

    for don on his eightieth

Music is my passion, and every time I see Cherry, Warren Zevon’s song, “Werewolves of London,” starts playing in my head. “I’d like to meet his tailor” is the specific verse.

    Happy Birthday, Don!

He’s played the stereotypical grumpy old man for years, and he’s done it better than anyone else out there. Hats off to you, Grapes. I only hope I can gripe and grumble half as well as you when I’m 80.

    80? Really?

I think he is really Tunes’ baby’s father in Wheels Ontario.
