Video: Controversial Kadri hit leads to Maple Leafs goal

Feb 1, 2014, 9:16 PM EST

The Battle of Ontario ramped up during the second period of Saturday’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.

Maple Leafs’ forward Nazem Kadri got away with a hit from behind on Senators’ defenseman Cody Ceci, then immediately took the puck and set up Joffrey Lupul for the tying goal. The Senators immediately responded to the Kadri hit, going right after him behind the net after the goal was scored.

The Senators weren’t happy with the non-call, either.

“We felt it was from behind, but to be honest it’s irrelevant what we think,” said Colin Greening, as per Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 radio.

Kadri has already received supplemental discipline this season. He was suspended three games for running Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom in November.

In that same game, Kadri was ejected for an illegal hit to the head of Mikael Granlund.

Kadri’s made some dangerous hits this year…won’t call him a dirty player, just reckless. He’s not like John Scott where he goes out with the intention to hurt somebody, but he needs to learn to hit cleanly and safely.

    • thomasvanek - Feb 1, 2014 at 9:40 PM

I love how ignorant people are about Scott. Anyway, at this point there is no doubt in my mind Kadri is a dirty player with no respect for the game.

      • lowenni - Feb 1, 2014 at 11:20 PM

I used John Scott as an example of a goon. But you can hardly call me ignorant for talking about John Scott’s intention and role on his team and then say Kadri is a dirty player. I think Kadri’s soft, he’s stupid, he doesn’t have respect, I agree with you–but that is not a dirty play with intentions of injury–that is just a stupid play. Kadri is not a tough guy.

      • lowenni - Feb 1, 2014 at 11:35 PM

Or at least, to put it better, he did it out of recklessness, not because of an intent to injure like some goons in this league. Yes, it was dirty, but I think Kadri is just young and stupid and learning. He’s not an intentionally dirty player, is what I meant

      • seansatfoh - Feb 2, 2014 at 3:25 PM

I’ve seriously never met a larger group of cry babies than sens fans, when it comes to losing to the leafs. Duh you haven’t won a cup since 67. So? Your franchise hasn’t won a cup ever. Of still rather see the sens do well than any us team.

Hey angrytwitterguy, how often do you have to change your diapers. I love trolling keyboard tough guys. Can you act like an adult and not resort to brainless name calling, and make a valid point. Probably not. Some rink, that’s now an IGA, commits a crime and the whole franchise is a joke? Guess you’ve never heard of the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, etc. Man I can’t wait for all the original names your gonna call me. Let me guess, clown, douche, presuming something about my sexuality. Let’s have it genius.

      • thomasvanek - Feb 2, 2014 at 5:13 PM

Does anybody else find it ironic that seansatfoh tells people to act like adults and stop name-calling and in the same message call sens fans cry babies? P.S. not a sens fan

      • seansatfoh - Feb 2, 2014 at 6:35 PM

No, no one does. You know why? Because it’s not irony. You should look up definitions before you post. Just a friendly heads up.

There’s no doubt in your mind that Kadri is a dirty player? You don’t watch him or the leafs a lot do you? You just go on the one suspension and the bad hit he’s had in one season. Doesn’t seem to look like you know what you’re talking about. This example and the irony thing. I’d stop positing.

      • thomasvanek - Feb 2, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Maybe I should have used the word hypocritical, but either way you are a moron and a shinning reason as to why people hate arrogant Leafs fans

    • joey4id - Feb 2, 2014 at 12:39 PM

“Intention to hurt somebody” Do you mean like intention to hurt someone with a punch to the face during a fight? Now that must be the intent you are referring to.

PS this is not an anti fighting comment, but more so about my objection to using the word intent when it suits your and others argument.

    • brewinflames - Feb 2, 2014 at 3:46 PM

Finish Check, fetch puck, set up goal…no problem.

As for the hit itself, boarding at best. Btw, i hate the leafs.

  2. sabatimus - Feb 1, 2014 at 9:36 PM

    Kadri again. Spin the wheel.

  3. stakex - Feb 1, 2014 at 9:55 PM

I doubt anything more will come of this, despite Kadri’s record. It probably should have been boarding on the ice, but its hardly an over the top nasty hit. Its also not clean on the numbers, but rather slightly from the side (probably why the ref right there didn’t make the call).

Of course if there was an injury on the play, we would be discussing just how long the suspension would be. Such is the NHL discipline system.

    • angrytwitterguy - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:18 PM

“its hardly an over the top nasty hit”

It’s exactly that type of hit that is the games most dangerous, I’m guessing you’re no different than the NHL. When you see the player get up, it’s not that nasty, but when he is being placed on a stretch and his neck is being stabilized, then it’s over the top.

It’s without any doubt the most dangerous hit in professional hockey, yet you don’t see it for what it is, disgusting and dangerous.

    • joey4id - Feb 2, 2014 at 12:42 PM

Wow! I agreement with your comment. Well! Most of it. The referee in the corner didn’t make the call because at the moment of contact you can clearly see the referee looking over his right shoulder whereas the hit happened to his left.

  4. spezzdispenser - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Just awful officiating. Kadri is pure trash.

    • dirtyback - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:13 PM

      butthurt sens fan

      • angrytwitterguy - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:23 PM

Why would anyone be butthurt by the Leafs?
        1967 says hello
Good job vs the Bruins in game 7 last year
Has Dave Clarkson been healthy scratched yet?

      • spezzdispenser - Feb 1, 2014 at 11:12 PM

That play changed the whole dynamic of the game. Goal shouldn’t have counted and you have Ottawa going on a powerplay up 2-1.

      • mp1131211 - Feb 2, 2014 at 12:49 AM

        Hardly, he’s right. Trash

    • seansatfoh - Feb 2, 2014 at 6:46 PM

What about the missed call on Neil? He had an interference penalty that went uncalled. 10 seconds later he scored the game tying goal. Fact is both game tying goals occurred because of missed calls. Horribly officiated game, agreed. As a leaf fan I hate that the goal has controversy. However, I believe the sens should’ve had momentum after that goal Neil scored. Game was even. Then they lost the game by 3 goals and 10 shots. If the sens won we’d barely hear about this. Kadri would get harassed, as he should be, but that’s it. The Senators inability to get up and win the game has nothing to do with the Leafs fans being rapists or whatever someone said. It shows in the standings this year, who the better team is. We’ll find out whoever is the best at the end of the season.

  5. imgoingtowichita - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:13 PM

Devorski should have retired at game 1499.

  6. angrytwitterguy - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:14 PM

Just remember when a real tough guy jumps Nazem Kadri and Bertuzzi’s him to spare everyone your tears for Kadri, he’s been asking for it, just like Steve Moore was asking for it.

    • dueman - Feb 2, 2014 at 2:42 AM

      Very silly comment.

      • angrytwitterguy - Feb 2, 2014 at 9:26 AM

Yes it’s sooooo silly, Moore was a non tough guy that deliverered too many cheap shots, just likeNazem, and then finally a real tough guy had enough of Steve Moore and ended him. Kadri is going to find himself getting jumped by a real tough guy sooner or later if he keeps it up.

    • joey4id - Feb 2, 2014 at 12:45 PM

So, you’re a hypocrite. You wrote, “When you see the player get up, it’s not that nasty, but when he is being placed on a stretch and his neck is being stabilized, then it’s over the top.”

Then you post trash. Real classy!

  7. dunnaj84 - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:17 PM

Have to agree with you stakex, after watching the hit several times, Kadri hits him more on the side at his hip. Was he smart trying to hit him there probably not with him being that far away from the boards, Ceci being bent over so low to the ice makes it worse by losing his balance. Won’t agree with the idea of a dirty hit, but definitely on the reckless side.

Kadri is at his best when he plays with an edge, and gets physical but he needs to find that line of being safe and being reckless, in a lot of ways it was the same as Ovechkin when he came into the league. Loved to throw his body around, but didn’t always make the best decisions when to do it.

  8. alliceishome - Feb 1, 2014 at 10:56 PM

Wasn’t a hit between the numbers, for the simple reason he was bent over so far that that they were out of reach. You just can’t put yourself in that situation.

  9. kaber15 - Feb 1, 2014 at 11:11 PM

Hey angry twitter guy, how long did your bruins go between cups? And how many did you have before that? Typical boston fan! Win one cup and you can’t shut up!

    • angrytwitterguy - Feb 2, 2014 at 1:00 AM

Im not a Bruins fan, but hey you can pick ANY team in the league and they have a better franchise than the Leafs.

Pre cap years and money coming out their ears and the Leafs failed miserably for decades.
Your Leafs are a massive joke and have been since the 70′s.

Typical Leaf fan, your team has failed year after year after year for 40 years and you pretend that there’s something to be proud of when it comes to the Leafs.

The Leafs are like the Knicks, they are interested in money and entertainment, winning has always been secondary.

Leaf fans make me laugh in all honestly, one mistake and failure after another for over 40 years with nothing but the wasted career of Sundin, raped lil boys and lots of profits to show for it.

      • dueman - Feb 2, 2014 at 3:00 AM

Wow dude, your team loses so you decide to attack Toronto’s fans? What has Ottawa done that makes you so special and better than a Leaf fan? I find it pretty silly as well that you would choose to try to make Leaf fans look bad by pointing out how loyal we are??? Also, in your last paragraph….”raped lil boys and lots of profits to show for it”….are you really this much of an idiot? I really hope that your life improves, because right now it’s quite obvious that you are really sad….chin up!

      • angrytwitterguy - Feb 2, 2014 at 9:28 AM

        Not a Sens fan douche

Ohhhh you wanna pretend that MLG didn’t employ child a rapist who him and his friends lured young boys to the garden and raped them?

Truth hurts huh, stop denying what happened and accept that it’s part of Leaf history.

      • dueman - Feb 2, 2014 at 1:12 PM

With this last comment you just made yourself completely irrelevant….get a life.

      • kaber15 - Feb 2, 2014 at 4:25 PM

It’s called being a fan bud! I don’t jump ship when my team doesn’t do well.

  10. vm113 - Feb 1, 2014 at 11:28 PM

Holy crap that’s one of the worst boarding jobs i’ve ever seen. Ceci did himself no favors getting up so quick. I can’t believe no penally was called, it’s absurd. Wow.

  11. kaber15 - Feb 1, 2014 at 11:41 PM

He should have been more convincing when he threw himself into the boards! It’s a shame that players continue to do this. Should have been called a dive.

  12. sheckyrimshot - Feb 2, 2014 at 3:33 AM

    that was a nice assist

  13. mountainmantride - Feb 2, 2014 at 12:02 PM

It’s only a matter of time when Kadri finds himself on the wrong end of a hit like the one that Scott Stevens dealt on Eric Lindros. D-men around the league know what Kadri’s about. Kadri has a target on his back. Keep you head up Kadri.

  14. leafsilluminati - Feb 2, 2014 at 12:32 PM

All of you posters are full of crap. How about you talk about Ceci admitting post-game that he turned his back at the last moment hoping Kadri would slow down, and that he should’ve stayed down afterwards. All this garbage about Kadri being dirty and has no respect for the game. Please. I sense butthurt because the Leafs are the hottest team in the league right now.

    • elguapo12 - Feb 2, 2014 at 5:04 PM

No butthurt here. The Leafs always peak early. Enjoy these little moments.

  15. joey4id - Feb 2, 2014 at 1:05 PM

Glad Ceci was not hurt on that play. CeciI Did you Ceci that Air Canada sign on the boards? Look, these kids have to stop turning their backs like that. When Kadri made the decision to turn towards Ceci his numbers were not in his face. Should have been a penalty, but my guess is that Kadri will not be suspended for that hit. Do you Ceci what I’m saying?

    • elguapo12 - Feb 2, 2014 at 5:06 PM

For your sake, I hope at the very least your dog thinks you’re funny.

      • joey4id - Feb 2, 2014 at 5:34 PM

😅 I’m too smart to have a dumb pet. Don’t be so Queen of E. Loosen up your you know what. Are you a Brit? Hahaha!
