Video: Neuvirth’s glove denies Nyquist

Jan 31, 2014, 9:06 PM EDT

Washington Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth might not make many net appearances this season, but he’s likely to show up often in highlight reels for a while after this beautiful glove save from Friday:

Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist was the victim of that elaborate nab. Neuvirth, 25, is shooting for his fourth win of the season.

If the Caps are still shopping a guy who was at least a 1A/1B netminder for them, then they might want to start with this snare.

Yeah he’s gonna have to keep making saves like that this game. Caps have already given up 32 shots and the third period hasn’t even started yet. Pathetic effort and defense. At least Neuvy is showing he’s still a NHL-calibre goalie, I believe in him. If he keeps playing well and Holtby keeps playing poorly I wonder if they’ll switch who’s on the trading block…

Quite often when we see what at first looks like a spectacular glove save, the slo-mo replay shows that most of the flashy glove movement came after the puck was in it. This was not one of those! This was a terrific save.
