Elias rips Devils teammates that ‘want to do it by themselves out there’

The Devils have lost three of five and were outscored 10-3 in their last two, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to hear alternate captain Patrik Elias fume last night.

“We’ve got guys that want to do it by themselves out there,” he said after Tuesday’s loss to St. Louis, per the New Jersey Star-Ledger. “That’s all.”

Elias wouldn’t name names, though there was no lack of candidates following a listless effort against the Blues in which the Devils mustered just 23 shots and wet 0-for-4 on the power play.

From an overall perspective, it seems New Jersey’s problem this year is consistency — or a lack thereof. The club’s longest winning streak of the season is three games and it’s occurred just once, during a stretch in mid-November where the Devils beat Pittsburgh, Anaheim and Los Angeles (the latter two victories coming in overtime).

Since then, the club has failed to get on any sort of roll. Check out January alone:

Elias’ frustration probably comes from the fact that, despite the inconsistency, the Devils are still pretty close to a playoff position. They head into Wednesday’s action just two points back of Carolina for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, though the ‘Canes have a game in hand.

Elias says the Devils have the talent to be a playoff team, so long as they play the right way.

“We have good enough players to win hockey games. We’ve done that in the past and in a lot of the 54 games we’ve played this year,” he explained. “But guys can’t do it by themselves.”

“But guys can’t do it by themselves.”
Hey Patrick, they can’t do it as a team either!

NOTE TO ELIAS: If the system was working, they wouldn’t be trying to make something happen. When you’re team gives up 6 unanswered goals while blowing a 3-1 lead and the very next game you go down 2-0, what do you expect them to do? The system sucks.

It resulted in 9 unanswered goals in 5 periods!!! NINE!!

Those names Patrick speaks of are most probably Michael Ryder, Damian Brunner and possibly Ryan Clowe.

And yes he has the right to rip into the other players!!!

This team has been playing like they have never played before as a team at times.

I honestly think DeBoer need to go. He is not an NHL calibre coach by any means.

So you’re telling me a guy that took us to the cup final… in his first year with the team needs to go? Just 2 seasons ago… and now he’s not an NHL caliber coach? Just only now? Team’s been up and down… it’s finally fully healthy, with Harrold on IR but practicing with the team. Guy hasn’t had a single line consistently produce all season long. And granted the goal scoring talent isn’t one superstar player, but a collection of above average guys that need to score by committee… didn’t that just happen against the Blues just 3 games ago? 7 Gs, from 7 different players? So really cool it on the PDB needs to go.

2012 Finals were stacked with Kovalchuk, Parise, and Clarkson. All having great years as well. Add to the equation Larry Robinson and Adam Oates were behind the bench and yo uhave a team that not even Rich Kotite could’ve screwed up.

As soon as they all left, DeBoer was exposed as the same coach the Panthers fired.

Not DeBoer’s fault. Just not a very talented roster, don’t blame it on the coach. In my view he was what actually got the Devils to the Finals. He had a great puck-possession system that kept the Devils keep up with more talented teams. Beyond Kovalchuk, Parise didn’t have a great playoffs and they didn’t have a lot of scorers. It was a team game.

    Cough Jagr!

    • lowenni - Jan 29, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Jagr’s been their best player. If he’s “trying to do it all by himself”, it’s working.

To Devil fans: who is his line mates?
