Video: Shawn Thornton’s goal leaves Milan Lucic raving

Jan 28, 2014, 10:42 PM EDT

Tuesday’s 6-2 Boston Bruins win inspired some snark/sarcasm from Florida Panthers goalie Tim Thomas, but his former teammates seemed fixated on Shawn Thornton‘s backhand goal:

Maybe it was his way of being modest, but Milan Lucic raved about the goal the most:

On the other hand, Tuukka Rask decided not to give Thornton a ton of praise, but he couldn’t fight the urge to provide a one-liner.

“I don’t know if I want to pump his tires too much,” Rask said.

From the look of things, the postgame interviews might have been as exciting (or more enthralling) than Boston’s blowout of Florida itself.

That being said, was it a better watch than the State of the Union?

Let’s see John Scott do that.

Thomas went down almost like he was knocked out by a guy wearing gloves.

Only 1 goal prettier for the Bruins this year was the Shorty Marchand scored on the Kings last week

Damn, that really was a slick goal. Good show, Thornton!

Rask is a punk. He’s choked twice in the playoffs, and will never have a season like Thomas did when he was a huge part of why Boston won the cup. He should just shut his mouth, and quit trying to poke fun at the guy who brought a championship to your team. The only ring Rask will ever have is the one Thomas got for him.

WTF are you talking about…he was “poking fun” at Thornton while using Luongo’s comment about Thomas. He said nothing bad about Thomas.

      Choke?

I am assuming the first “choke” you are talking about was when they blew the 3-0 lead to the Flyers

    • spitfisher - Jan 29, 2014 at 9:54 AM

apparently you did not see Rask’s numbers in last years play off run, many times they were better than Thomas’s historical play off run……Try again please.

      • sunderlanding - Jan 29, 2014 at 12:33 PM

Except for one. Wins. Who cares about save percentage when you don’t get the job done. Thomas was better. Besides every goalie that plays for Boston has good save percentage and goals against because of the way the team plays defence. Try again.

So you’re comparing Rask’s playoff numbers to the single best postseason performance by a goalie in history. Great work.

      Choke?

I am assuming the first “choke” you are talking about was when they blew the 3-0 lead to the Flyers:
      A) He outplayed Miller to get to that series
      B) The Flyers were a better team and shouldn’t have been down 0-3
      C) Trent Whitfield, Marc Savard, Marco Sturm, Matt Hunwick, Miroslav Satan,Steve Begin,Vladimir Sobotka, and Dennis Wideman (POINTS leader). All played – A LOT!
      D) Mark Recchi was their leading Goal scorer – fine in early to mid 90′s not so much a good thing in 2009-10
      E) Lucic was not the Lucic he is today. He had 9 goals that season.
      F) B’s were up 3-0 when Krejci got hurt. Marchand wasn’t in NHL yet.
      G) Steve Begin, Vlad Sobotka, Trent Whitfield were their 2nd/3rd/4th line centers for games 4-7

The core was there but Lucic (17 goals career high), Krejci, McQuaid (<20 NHL games), and even Boychuk (<60 nhl games) weren't the players they are now. You could see it was there, but quite yet.

The other "choke" being the Cup against the Hawks?
GP W L T/O GA SA SV SV% GAA SO MIN
      Tim Thomas 2011 25 16 9 51 849 798 .940 1.98 4 1542
      Tuukka Rask 2013 22 14 8 0 46 761 715 .940 1.88 3 1466

I don't' see choke. I see a guy who arguably played better than Thomas. I see a guy who held the Penguins to 2 goals in four games. TWO GOALS.

Could he have played better against the Flyers? Yup, but he was 22 and had at least 5-7 guys who are no longer in the league (not by choice).

The only other playoff chance Rask got after the Philly collapse he got swept the pens and got them to game 6 of the Cup finals. Pretty decent chance he makes it to at least the ECF again this year.

      • sunderlanding - Jan 30, 2014 at 2:03 PM

Remember they were up 3-0 in game 7 against the flyers. Rask should’ve been able to lock that down. Not to mention the last couple minutes of game 6 last year. It’s not about numbers it’s about making the big save at the right time. Rask is overrated.

    • shortsxit34 - Jan 29, 2014 at 5:15 PM

      huh?

  6. slaugin - Jan 29, 2014 at 9:05 AM

Haha. Rask is the closest friend Thomas has on that team.

shawny with the savy vet moves…best enforcer in the league

  8. bruinsrocku - Jan 30, 2014 at 9:11 AM

Not only was this a really pretty goal, but it shows what I & many other Bruins fans have known for years.. Just because Thornton is capable, and more than willing to stick up for himself & his teammates, doesnt mean he’s not also a pretty damn good hockey player, and one of the main reasons the Bruins have had one of, if not the best 4th lines in the league, in recent years..

Oh and how about him threading the needle thru all that traffic from the point, to Reily at the crease, the other night for another pretty goal too.. Damn that was an amazing play.. Hopefully that didnt get overlooked either, among all the goals theyve been scoring these past 3 games.

Go Shawny, show em what ya got you man ;)
