Sun glare delays start of Rangers-Devils at Yankee Stadium

The start of the New York Rangers vs. New Jersey Devils Stadium Series game at Yankee Stadium has been delayed.

The NHL announced the start of the first outdoor game in New York City was being delayed due to safety concerns over the sun. With the sun high and bright in an overcast sky, the glare on the ice is causing visibility issues as well as other worries about the ice.

The game is now slated to start at 1:38 p.m. ET.

The sun has caused problems for previous outdoor games. The 2012 Winter Classic in Philadelphia was delayed for two hours as they waited for the sun to pass over Citizens Bank Park. The issue then was the direct sunlight and 40 degree temperatures that caused the ice to soften in spots.

The temperature in the Bronx is in the mid-20s, but with the sun being as powerful as it is, it can still cause issues with the ice itself and the rink crew has put a tarp on the ice to protect it.

Tons of hype over these outdoor games but then I always get reminded of how piss poor the play is during these outdoor games. It just seems to me that the game is not as fast when it is played outdoors.

    • slysipops - Jan 26, 2014 at 4:34 PM

yeah, ain’t that the truth ! then they get all the pros to lie about how much they enjoyed playing outdoors as a kid………. bull$hit …they had to play where they could !

This outdoor game crap is starting to become overkill

    • joey4id - Jan 26, 2014 at 1:32 PM

You must be joking. Tell that to the over 100k fans that showed up at the winter classic, or the fans that sold out Dodger Stadium, or Yankee Stadium. It’s all about generating profits which benefits all. Players, owners, NHL, and the fans. “Thank you, Mr. Bettman” is what you would be saying if you knew anything about the business side of professional sports.

      • patthehockeyfan - Jan 26, 2014 at 1:43 PM

I’d like to say two words to Bettman, and they’re not “Thank You.”

Stop lecturing people, joey. If someone’s opinion doesn’t agree with yours, that doesn’t make them wrong.

Some of us enjoy the sport without all the hoopla.

P.S. Dodger Stadium didn’t sell out – main reason being that your Mr. Bettman enormously overpriced the tickets. So much for your remark about profits benefitting fans.

      • joey4id - Jan 26, 2014 at 2:54 PM

Just saying as long as the fans show up and tickets sell its good for business. The wouldn’t be what it is today if it was not in part for Bettman. You’ve got to give credit where credit despite your dislike for the man. Many do.

        Dear Captain Obvious..

There’s more Hockey fans sitting at home watching games on tv or online then there are who attend these outdoor “classics” ….. it’s becoming watered down .. there should ONE game a year , period. and you wonder why everyone on this board laughs at your drivel … but hey keep drinking the Kool Aid

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 27, 2014 at 3:09 AM

30 thumbs up to 9 thumbs down.. obviously i must be onto something , other then agitating the living life out of you lil feller

    • joey4id - Jan 27, 2014 at 7:14 AM

Charlie, what are the TV ratings for these games?

      • patthehockeyfan - Jan 27, 2014 at 8:18 AM

Last word on this, joey. To use a phrase from another sport: game, set, match. You’ve lost. Now go to your room.

The NBC announcing crew breaking down a Jersey Boys medley=unwatchable television.

    • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Jan 26, 2014 at 1:01 PM

The lip synching is laughable and almost criminal.

    • enollatsknarf - Jan 26, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Milbury and Roenick = unwatchable television

  4. csbanter - Jan 26, 2014 at 12:59 PM

Seems like an enthusiastic crowd, delays happen. The NHL finally realize they had to spice things up a bit. The danger of course is the novelty wearing off of this type of event.

  5. dumptrucked - Jan 26, 2014 at 1:01 PM

Keep the winter classic and scrap the rest of these games. Also, play the game at night where you can control the lights that shine in the ice.

  6. drewsylvania - Jan 26, 2014 at 1:02 PM

Seriously? This didn’t occur to anyone when you’re playing a hockey game IN AN OPEN STADIUM AT 12:30PM?

  7. ipaintrinks - Jan 26, 2014 at 1:02 PM

gee, you would think someone would’ve thought oh hey maybe playing in the afternoon with the sun beaming directly down on the surface isn’t a good idea. derp.

  8. patthehockeyfan - Jan 26, 2014 at 1:24 PM

What a waste! I timed everything perfectly this morning – housework, take out the trash, do a couple of hours of work I brought home from the office. Finished at exactly 12:30. Now I’m stuck watching Aaaanold Schwarzenegger yell, “Billy!’ in the movie, Predator.

With the snow earlier this week, there was talk about having problems getting the rink ready because of it. Rink’s ready now, and can’t play because of another natural element.

    Hope you’re enjoying this, Bettman.

The Devils need to go back to the green and red permanently, they look great!

    • strictlythedanks - Jan 26, 2014 at 3:41 PM

I tend to agree, maybe its the wild fan in me

  10. patthehockeyfan - Jan 26, 2014 at 2:26 PM

The action and excitement in the 1st period of this game has already surpassed yesterday’s entire Ducks – Kings’ game.

  11. nicknyhc - Jan 26, 2014 at 2:37 PM

Brian Boyle : 2 minute minor for throwing a hard hit

TV time out after a Devils icing.

Devils setting a pick at the blue line to obstruct the Rangers D on the powerplay goal.

    Puck bouncing like crazy.

I’m glad to be witnessing the first ever BASKETBALL game at Yankee Stadium.

pattehockeyfan, don’t lecture me. :-) just kidding. We are entitled to our opinion, and use the reply button as we wish.

Ducks/Kings game was sold out. Get the facts at the link below.

  13. joey4id - Jan 26, 2014 at 3:10 PM

The delay is certainly not as bad as the one that occurred during the Super Bowl last year. A mere glitch in the grand scheme of things. Right. The NHL has rescheduled two Carolina Hurricanes games in January — one against the Philadelphia Flyers and the other against the Ottawa Senators.

    Yeah Baby !

  15. slysipops - Jan 26, 2014 at 4:58 PM

they plan these fiascos for so long in advance and nobody took the time to see if the sun ( which has been in the sky since GOD made the earth ) would shine over the wall causing a problem ? great planning boys! say what you want and hate me for what i say, but here it is anyway………….it seems to me that the league and the owners, are attempting to take the game away from the real fans and are trying to hype it up enough to attract more and more of the trendy crowd, mostly i’m sure for the bigger bucks .sure the outdoor games get in a bigger crowd but are they people who even know what the game is all about ..or is it that they are there just to be able to tell everyone at work ( the stockbrokers office etc. etc. ) about how they attended and took a ton of ‘SELFIES “to show everyone . could you have imagined watching this game at yankee stadium while sitting in those way far away bleachers down the third baseline? you’de better have the eyes of an eagle. do you need to see KISS preform between periods, or is just talking over the game so far enough ? one last word from me …………IF THE OUTSIDE GAMES WERE THE WAY TO GO…WHY WERE INDOOR RINKS EVER BUILT ?

    • patthehockeyfan - Jan 26, 2014 at 5:22 PM

Agree with you, sly. Bettman’s goal (pardon the pun) is to make ice hockey watchable for more people. Sell more tickets (at increased prices) and make the owners more rich.

It seems as if some people appreciate what Bettman is doing for the game. What I object to is what he’s done to the sport. Like what TV has done to the sport of football – completely ruined it, and made it into no more than a television spectacle. (Yes, I know I’ll get thumbs down.)

Bettman said that the Ducks – Kings’ game was a Hollywood production. The USC Marching Band (while great) and KISS have nothing to do with the sport. Pure Hollywood, pure show.

What’s happening is that this once great sport of ice hockey is being turned into a spectacle, both for TV and for, as you wrote, the trendy crowd, mostly for the bigger bucks. When one considers points for losing teams to artificially keep them in the playoff hunt, we original fans of the sport just sit and shake our heads and sadly remember when the sport was great – without KISS and fireworks and beach volleyball and yoga.

sad isn’t it pat ! not that i want to deny players making good money for what they do , but i remember a time when players had jobs or did rodeo during the off season to keep in shape or add to the years earnings. add to that… there was much more dedication to the team or the sport in general. different world..different times i know and i think it all sucks .i heard a story about when BOBBY HULL first got signed to a junior team. while talking to him and his father a figure of $ 6000 plus dollars was tossed out. the senior HULL said no…. i can’t afford to pay you that much to let him play hockey…. BOBBY said dad, that’s what they’ll pay me to play ! imagine that senario ever coming up in this days world . and as you said, the ticket prices just keep getting farther and farther out of reach for the blue collar fan!
