Giroux calls Flyers’ 6-1 loss to Bruins ‘embarrassing’

There was nothing positive for the Philadelphia Flyers to take from Saturday’s 6-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. It was the classic case of from bad to worse.

“It has to be the most embarrassing game I’ve been involved with,” said Flyers’ captain Claude Giroux, as per Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News.

The Flyers, who had battled back into the thick of the Metropolitan Division standings after a bad start to the season, have only three wins in their last 10 games. According to CSN Philadelphia, Flyers’ head coach Craig Berube called his team “fragile” following this latest defeat.

Led by Jarome Iginla and his four-point night – two goals, two assists – the Bruins jumped out to a four-goal lead after 40 minutes and added two more on the power play in the third, nullifying any faint hopes of a Philadelphia comeback.

The Bruins were rested, with a four-day break. The Flyers were playing their third game in four days. One team was refreshed, the other not so much.

“Right from the first shift we were into it,” Iginla told NHL.com. “Every line was ready to go. You don’t get many breaks during the season, and when you get them you want to make the most, show coach you can handle it too.”

Come on, Philly…. you gotta at least try…

  2. mp1131211 - Jan 25, 2014 at 6:03 PM

    Hartnell’s “fight”…. lol…. oh man….

  3. joey4id - Jan 25, 2014 at 6:04 PM

How embarrassing was his tripping penalty at the start of the game which led to the B’s first goal.

It’s no secret in the league that but pressure on the Flyers’ will lead to giveaways.

“We have to tighten up; we have a tough schedule coming up. It seems like we’re throwing the puck away too much in or zone and they’re just coming at us and coming at us.” -Jake Vorachek

Flyers showed nothing today. They could be even further from a playoff spot with the next games against the Wings, Ducks, King, Sharks (X2), Avalanche, & Flames before the Olympic break.

Grossman coughs up the puck at the 17 minute mark of the 1st period. Increase pressure by the B’s leads to Grossman taking a boarding penalty.

Faceoff loss by Couturier led to B’s second goal.

Grossman giveaway at the Philly blue line. Smith intercepted an attempted pass to Striet. Riley scores goal #3 for the B’s.

Faceoff win to Coburn, and then Coburn giveaway to Bergeron led to goal #4.

The B’s exposed the Flyers weaknesses today. No doubt about that.

Wake me when the playoffs start……

    • whammy71 - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:17 PM

Well, if you’re a Flyer fan….you’ll get at least a 15 month nap…..and I predict something more like 27 month nap.

      • WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:31 PM

Why? If the Flyers don’t make the playoffs they won’t have them this year? I want to see playoff hockey…..think you tried to troll on something that had nothing to do with Flyers.

  5. the8man - Jan 25, 2014 at 6:25 PM

    Bruins fan here.

They only played forty eight games last year. And they have to cram all the games in with the Olympic break. These guys just aren’t back to full season capability. And the Bs were terribly rested while the Flyers were obviously spent.

Other than the fact this game was in Philly how did everyone expect this thing to go? I think the NHL has to look at doing a better job of balancing the schedule. How can you make a team that has played three times in four nights take on a team that hasn’t played since Monday? That being said, the Olympic break is just around the corner. I think March will tell us who the real contenders are.

    • mp1131211 - Jan 25, 2014 at 6:38 PM

The flyers’ problems are not because of last years lock out. That’s laughable. Shouldn’t the Bs have still been tired from the playoffs if that were the case?

    • spitfisher - Jan 25, 2014 at 6:38 PM

all the teams had a compressed schedule last year- and they all have it this year prior to the Olympics, so they should used it to it not sure how much of an excuse this is, other than the Bs were rested

      • the8man - Jan 25, 2014 at 7:26 PM

It was actually the Flyers fourth game in five nights. They played Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and today. I dunno. Seems like a lot to me.

The Bruins have four games between now and next Saturday at this time. And they played today, so that’s five in about 171 hours, and I ain’t liking it.

    • joey4id - Jan 25, 2014 at 6:40 PM

I believe the Flyers are cooked. I’ve been predicting they won’t make the playoffs since October.

      joey4id – Oct 27, 2013 at 12:33 PM
idk. can they maintain a pace to play 12 games over .500? Considering schedules, traveling, injuries, lack of depth on d, it’s practically impossible for them to make up for loss ground. they were in a similar situation last year with 21 games to play. mathematically possible but unrealistic.

      joey4id – Nov 24, 2013 at 3:00 PM
its great for us to see the flyers turn it around. they have some good talent. still don’t think they will make the playoffs because they’re not strong enough to make for lost ground, their d is too slow. things will only get tougher from here on in.

      joey4id – Dec 5, 2013 at 10:24 AM
It was a big win considering they came back from a 2 goal deficit. Let’s not forget that the Wings had their b squad dressed last night. Coburn got beat at center ice on Franzen’s goal and he had to hold Helm inside the blue line which lead to a penalty. Signs that he is too slow, and he will get beat often especially when playing against the better teams. You know you re weak on d when Coburn is playing when you re down 2 players. No doubt Mason is doing well, and they have some very good players, but overall depth is lacking. In the past 12 years very few teams made the playoffs with less than 90 points. Very difficult task when every game is a make or break a season since being 1 7 0. Most other teams are playing to win games whereas the Flyers who are constantly in a do or die mode. That wears a team down quickly. Fatigue and injury go hand in hand, so they have to be very very lucky on top of battling the mental fatigue of chasing teams for a playoff spot.

        Thanks much Joseph………insightful…….really.

      • isithockeyseasonyet - Jan 26, 2014 at 5:10 AM

Your opinion wavers based on the most recent games, i predict this, I predict that…I predict nobody cares what you think

  6. penguins87and71 - Jan 25, 2014 at 6:49 PM

The problem with the Flyers is their defense is not that good. You can’t be giving up 4,5,or,6 goals a night and expect to win. Giving up that many goals is not a recipe for success. The Flyers have the scoring and Goaltending(yes even though Mason is struggling). I can’t Blame Steve Masons struggles solely on him, he does deserve some of the blame, but the defense deserves more. Its hard to be a good goaltender when your defense hangs out to dry.

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 7:13 PM

Iam not saying this for shock value if Iam GM Iam seriously shopping Claude G and start rebuilding this mess !

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 7:50 PM

Absolutely not hes far from problem, need to sure up back end. If I was betting man Id bet they shop the like of Read, B.Schenn, and Coutorier. Id say that rock solid forwards who will def be with team are Giroux, Simmonds, Voracheck.. Id imagine the flyers would love to try to move Hartnell and Vinny but no team be dumb enough to take the contract and also but would have to waive there No Trades.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:06 PM

You would make a horrible GM you don’t not trade a player because he is not the problem ! Your solution is trade one of the others and get the same type player in return whats that result I think your already seeing it !

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:13 PM

One hundred percent wrong they already locked up two cornerstones and gave long deals to trade them a short time later. Giroux just got a big extension this team will be built around him, call me what you want trading Giroux is assanine, hes there engine he there constant, trade read schenn or coutz bc they are still young are relatively cheap and make them attractive.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:19 PM

I beg to differ,,,,, Claude G is a highly skilled player not a cornerstone you have the two confused !

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:20 PM

Yes your delusional to not think he a cornerstone player of a franchise.

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:23 PM

If Im a bad GM bc I wouldn’t trade Giroux your a horrible talent evaluator if you think he isn’t a cornerstone of a franchise and hes the player to build around. trade him you have nothing for fans to come out a see, no one to sell tickets.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:26 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHA come out and see ???? There unwatchable with the greatest player in the world now ! HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHa your funny

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:32 PM

Just a hater bud your proved it there, saying on one hand trade G bc he skilled player then you make fun of him over best player in the world comment. Ill mark you down as Flyer hater at least watch a game so you know what you speak of.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:40 PM

Iam not a hater but your a stepford !

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:45 PM

Your a fool because It sounds to me your more about ” having someone to come out and see ” rather than see a CUP raised I now realize Iam talking to rookie ! Go to the carnival you idiot !

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:46 PM

I far from conform but think what you want bud said simply there are def other less drastic measures that can be taken to right the ship. Coutz, Schenn, and Read would fetch you a solid #2 dman accompanied with they have 18 mill to spend in July so it can be fixed don’t need massive overhaul new direction and when Captain is traded that is what you imply.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:51 PM

Are you speaking in code to other stepford fans because that is hard to decrypt !

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:50 PM

Every time you open your mouth bud I realize I know a lot more than you, a person that has to harass and name call the person he speaks to obviously he is implying he has no factual information or intellectual thing to say so he resorts to name calling to make him feel better. Go back and get into you racecar bed you juvenile.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:56 PM

Are you a Flyers cute player jersey wearing girl ?

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:00 PM

Far from a female pal just don’t waste my time on kids so when you go through puberty and actually know the subject matter you speak of come back, because right now adults are talking.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:05 PM

No your definitely a girl,,, I bet you just took your Peter Zezel jersey out of the rotation !

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:09 PM

Alright bud take care have to do grown up things now like put my 7 year old daughter to bed. Looks like you have something in common with her both read on 2nd grade level. Good luck with your Giroux trade on Playstation 3 let me know if your best friend that wears a headset accepts it.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:16 PM

Make sure you hang up your CLARKE jersey so it ain’t wrinkled for the carnival too ! OHHHHH!

      • steelwarriors55 - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:33 PM

I might be one of the few but I’m with you on that one.Claude Giroux might have a lot of skills he’s not captain material and certainly not worth the contract he’ll get.You cant just ”slide” when you’re the captain you need to work harder and skate as hard as you can and he does slide a lot. He’s lazy and you dont build your team around a guy like that.If you do build around him the foundations will be weak and you will need to do a full ”rebuild” one day or the other.I say trade him for a package or a solid D and let the other young players develop.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:41 PM

Steelworriors55 great handle by the way,,, your talking too one of the few FLYERS fan since (69) that knows the Flyers C is not even in the same stratosphere as your C ! The Flyers had the balls to trot out the 74 Flyers team today Cmon Man !!!

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 9:59 PM

STEELWARRIORS– Most likely a penguin fan saying it be good idea to trade Giroux, I wonder why LOL JK. Its to late hes got the contract already 8.2 mill/ yr until 2020 so that a moot point. He s far from lazy but def could make stride in captain department, he just turned 26. As for the C label id argue it isn’t just a flyers team id say the C has changed as the game evolved the C isn’t what it used to be league wide from back in late 70’s early 80’s

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Jan 25, 2014 at 10:40 PM

jbink2585 “STEELWARRIORS most likely a Pens fan ” DAAAAAAAAAAA YA Think ,,didnt need Scottland Yard to figure that one out ,,,ya dope !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Elmer you should learn grammar before calling others stupid

  7. jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 7:43 PM

As a flyers fan I will be first to admit, I got a false sense of hope when we went on a a west coast swing, played likes of Yotes, Canucks, etc and went 5-1 I had thought this team had turned a corner, boy was I wrong. This week has cemented to me that we are just not a good club, offensively we are close maybe a goal scorer away, in net I truly feel we are fine. Its defensively, where in lie the problem when we uped the level of competition like we did this week, Bruins, Jackets etc our blueline was exposed and it was exposed good. Grossman, Streit, Schenn are truly garbage in our own end. Its sad to think but father time has caught up to Kimmo and he is a shell of himself. The only serviceable d man is Coburn, he can still skate, and I really think he just caught into trying to do so much bc he pair mate is so bad. We will not make the playoffs nor is it worth it because we just get bounced anyway. Still early but anyone that would try to convince me the East Final wont be BOS/Pitt id probably call you nuts.

    • joey4id - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:04 PM

You had my attention until you referenced Coburn. Every game he is the direct cause of a goal. Kimmo may have lost a step or two, but his error factor is much lower that those of Coburn, Schenn, and Grossman.

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:16 PM

Ok. Im just telling you many people see it the way I said bc local papers and guys that cover team said that teams have called on the availability of Coburn, people don’t call for bad players. They almost traded him before the Holiday to Oilers.

      • joey4id - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:24 PM

I guess I’m missing something because every game I watch he’s directly responsible for a goal. Maybe he would be better with another team. idk….

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:28 PM

Yes I here you hes only 29 hes 6-5 can skate potential is there man, and the flashes hes shown, hes solid player. The Blueline right now in Philadelphia is just pathetic , he prb product of his environment sees all the other stiffs and they rubbing off LOL

      • President Charles Logan - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:52 PM

so joey (aka mrs know it all) you sure seem to have alot of time to watch every flyer game along with every other team’s games when they are playing at the same time…. seeing how you critique every team on this message forum and break down their entire game scheme .
you’re still the funniest lil nancy to pick on on this forum lol

      • joey4id - Jan 25, 2014 at 10:57 PM

;-) Ah! Technology! Amazing how far we’ve come. Yes?

So much hate on here today lol

  8. jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 7:52 PM

I honestly feel if there was a time of possession stat in NHL id bet Bruins were in Flyers end today for 40+ mins.

  9. crazemastercraze - Jan 25, 2014 at 8:07 PM

The Bruins exposed the Flyers weakness: everything. Good thing they have Mason signed for three more years hahaaaaaaaaaa!

  10. thesportsjudge - Jan 25, 2014 at 11:23 PM

Why? Why must people talk about layoffs and whatnot? If the B’s lost/played poorly, couldn’t people say the layoff led to “rust?”

    • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 11:28 PM

Yes, im not sure an realistic Flyers fan thinks our 4 games in 5 days and Bruins layoff was the cause of this debacle. I was at game there is serious Talent gap between the two clubs and sadly my Flyers have a lot of catching up to do. I wish I had stop watch because id say the b’s were in Flyers end for 2 period s plus

    • thesportsjudge - Jan 25, 2014 at 11:30 PM

I should clarify. I am NOT saying Philly players are using it as an excuse.

      • jbink2585 - Jan 25, 2014 at 11:36 PM

Yes bud we are just not on your Bruins level, and honestly I think we are destined for Bruins Pens East Final, id be shocked otherwise.

      • thesportsjudge - Jan 26, 2014 at 12:22 AM

I’m sorry if you thought that (second) comment was directed at you. It was a general statement. You jbink seem like a rational (Flyers) hockey fan. I like interacting with that type of fan.

  11. kastout11 - Jan 26, 2014 at 3:20 PM

Unfortunately, against the best the East has to offer, Philly saw just how far they are away from contending for the cup. The sad thing is, the East is not nearly as strong as the West. As a huge Flyers fan, who knows when/if I will ever see them win the cup.
